Because there was nothing truly special about any facet of his game. He was very good, but that was about it. I pay to see greatness, not a grindy .277 hitter with a bit of pop(in a bandbox no less).

Because the claim that he is one of the top 5 3B in the last 1/2 of the 20th Century isn't anything more than a realization that there weren't many great 3B.

Because you already had three Cubs from a team that never made the playoffs once in the what 10-12 years they were together. (And I'd toss Billy Williams out of the HOF as well-despite playoff experience elsewhere)

Because the only memorable videos/pictures of Santo on the field are him watching a black cat go by...and clicking his heels two-three months too soon. Or hitting yet another of his 'prodigous clouts' barely to the first row of the bleachers.

Because he didn't deserve it. The writers had it right.

Different group of voters this time. JORR compared him to Ken Boyer,that was pretty fair looking at their stats but Santo's overall hitting stats were better than anybody else's in his era. If Bill James says he should be in,I find it hard to disagree.

I've heard more than enough about the wildly over-rated(imo) Bill James. He & his acolytes are working damn hard at sucking the fun out of the game for me. That they've won exactly two titles (with massive juicers on the payroll) always seems to be lost in the constant praise and overlovin'.

Bill James should have been left as a night watchman in whatever God foresaken warehouse in Kansas it was that had him.

Look, if you want to say there should only be 20-30 people in the HOF, that's fine. But there aren't. There are hundreds of players. He is clearly better than half the third baseman in the hall right now, and a good portion of the other players in the Hall of Fame.

Bill Mazeroski, Phil Rizzuto, Tony Perez, and Gary Carter are HOFer's, Santo should definitely be in.

That's just compounding a series of bad mistakes with yet another one.

And with respect to Mazeroski & Perez, at least they had big moments on the biggest stage.

I think the closest you can get would be the 1970's Red Sox w/Fisk, Yaz, Rice, Tiant & Lynn(who aren't HOFers). But they at least won an AL title. (Edit: yet another long mythologized team )
