No comment from Cubs on Post-Dispatch report they've made an offer to Pujols.

If Pujols takes 10-year offer from Miami, look for Cubs to try and acquire 1B Gaby Sanchez, who fits their long term gameplan,

Man I have some real torn feelings on all of this.

I do not want the Cubs to invest that kind of money on him.

But I would love to see the meltdown of the Cardinal fans around here if he did sign with the Cubs.

Not shocking they made an offer. If it's anything close to the 9-10 years the Marlins are offering I..don't even know what I'd so.

Honestly, I wouldn't offer him more than 4 years with team option for 5

Its another Soriano deal.

Pay for the first half, live with the second half of the contract.

Not sure I wanna go down that road again...

Especially when we can't see the end of Soriano's road yet.

Yeah that would be perfect. As soon as Soriano is off the books Pujols will start the major decline.

Or get popped for PED usage.

Either way it's a bad deal as no one knows when the decline will begin or whatever else pops up. Signing him would probably be worse than Soriano in the long run....

Clean the books up, get the finances/stadium/farm system/draft in order and then make a move.

The Cubs will not make a 9-10 year offer. Their offer will likely be something more in line with 5 yrs, $150MM which I absolutely love.

That being said, the logical thing to assume is they are "involved" to keep tabs on the situation so they can monitor it closely. What happens to Pujols impacts what happens to the Cubs, whether it means pursuing Fielder, Gaby or another 1B.

Here's the thing. Prior to the steroid era precious few guys have been good into their late thirties. Hank Aaron is a notable exception that comes to mind. Mickey Mantle was pretty much finished at about 33. Whatever guys were doing from about 1993-2008 has made it easy to forget that 35 is old for a ballplayer.

If they could get him for that I would be good with that. But I don't think he will go for a 5 yr deal.

Are there any reports at how much the Marlins are offering with the 10yr deal?

The last deal I saw the Cards had on the table was 9 yrs for 198 million I think

And Albert Pujols may be the greatest hitter ever.

So...sometimes you take chances.

Well, he's certainly in a conversation about the greatest right-handed hitters ever. But I would think that expecting a guy to do what only a tiny percentage of other guys have ever done is the kind of risk that Theo Epstein was brought in not to take.

And of course the Cubs were late realizing it and took the risk on Soriano

The difference between those two is not as much as you'd think.

If Theo can drive up the market and then swing Sanchez I would be very happy.

Another tired and unfunny observation out of you. Are you Brian Hanley?

You made the first tired and unfunny observation in this thread.

Everyone else was legitimately discussing the story at hand and enter Frank and his zing at the Cubs.

So who are you crappin?

I heard Sanchez was dirty.

Cubs trying to drive Pujols' price up? I can't see them offering anyone a contract for more than 4 years.

For the record, Cubs have denied making an offer to Pujols.

Now being reported that the Cubs made a similar offer to Prince (less years in return for more $$$).

Ruth was good too. It happens. As long as he decline isn't dramatic he's worth it. Jeter and A-Rod are still playing at fairly high levels and they're on the wrong side of 35.
