If Stewart truly sucks a few months into the season, the season will most definitely have been lost at that point. Might as well test Vetters in the majors, regardless of what he had done through the minors.

It is a golden opportunity for Vitters to make the team out of spring training. Given the team will suck, might as well see what the guy can do as a backup 3B, 1B, OF type. He'll probably start the year at AAA for contract purposes however.

I'd like Vitters to start out in AAA. Don't throw him into the fire...you traded for Stewart, give Stewart a few months...let him play a bit at Wrigley when it warms up as well. He is the guy.

BUT if he truly bombs, then you look at Vitters and only Vitters for the remaining couple of months of the season. I don't want Vitters getting only partial at bats if he is in the majors, we don't need another Colvin situation back to back.

Good point. Either way, we should see the debut of Vitters this season. Given they will suck this year, might as well find out what the guy can do at ML level even if only for a September look see.

Damn that's a lot to give up for two bust outs. Stewart was givin every chance to win the 3B job in Colorado and he couldn't do it. Colvin has never had a real chance. I can't believe they traded my guy DJ.

Colvin was screwed by Quade and Hendry's inability to peddle Fukudome earlier. The guy had some real power and I would not count him out. We'll see on Stewart. He had a couple good years, does bat LH and is a 3B, so I'd say a good gamble. DJ was simply a role player. The reliever they got may be good if the can get his mechanics in order. Big time arm 97 MPH.

Colvin was given a TON of chances but never could capitalize because he stopped being good after almost dying

Sure was a lost year for the guy. Will be interesting to watch what he does in Colorado.

Jeff Baker is still around as well. At least for now. That does nothing for me, but he has stood at third base before.

True. Another guy to watch in 2012. Still just 22.

True. Totally forgot about him. He can hit lefties like crazy but blows vs righties. Better than DeWitt though by far.

Way too early to be looking at possible lineups. Lots of offseason left.

The guys OBP is 20 pts higher than his BA. If someone wants him in a trade for pitching, he is out of here.

How many of those spots might be different? 2? The Cubs don't exactly have a ton of prospects to trade, nor cash to spend. Maybe they can swing a trade for Morales...but the free agent market is weak after Fielder...what are the Cubs going to do...sign Derrek Lee or Kotchman for cheap money?

We can all hold out hope that Soriano is gone

You act like it is a surprise though. We all knew these next couple of years were going to be bad.

I have no idea what they are going to do, but I am sure the lineup that you just posted will not be the lineup when they start the season. Let's let the offseason play out until we start bitching about the lineup of suck.

From news stories, it would seem the only three positions now filled are 3B, SS, and RF. Reports have the Cubs possibly trading Byrd, Soto, and Soriano. Also reports that they are looking to sign Fielder. And don't forget about Brett Jackson.

Cubs actually have lots of money to spend, they just have chosen not to spend it yet.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs sign Fielder and then trade Soto and Byrd for the best pitching prospects they can get for them (not much). I also wouldn't be surprised if part of the Theo compensation is something to do with "bad" contracts.

Hilarious how quickly 'be patient' goes away and lineup hand wringing starts.

And the lineup will look better with Fielder at 1st

We got more in return than we gave up. Stewart is 26. He has 25hr and 18hr season on the books already. Obviously he's not great or we would have to given up anything of value to get him. I rather have Stewart on my team than Colvin/DJ. Thus, happy with the trade. Not hard to get.

I don't so much mean here, although I suspect there's a few that will come out within the next two months, but even just around the office. It's scary how quickly the Theo good will is gone.

I know exactly what you mean. But 100 years without a championship does strange things to people. I mean look at jimmypasta

if prince is signed this makes more sense.. you gave up two dimes and received 21 cents back... i don't think prince signs here
and most people expected the team to suck this year..fine..but go young..why sign a 32 year old dejesus?

Per Hoyer's quotes, they are close on a couple other deals. Obviously this 12-9 so they are just starting to reshape the shit roster. But yeah, as of now, that lineup looks brutal.

People confused about the DeJesus thing are killing me. You need to fill out a roster. He has a 2 year deal with an option for a buyout after 1. I get it if you don't like DeJesus as a player but cmon. You want nothing but shitty rookies filling out the roster?

The Cubs are really not THAT screwed after this year. Especially if an AL team is willing to take 14 million of Soriano's contract. Before everyone goes crazy about that possibility, 3/14 as a DH is not crazy. After that deal, the books are pretty clear. There are many teams in a worse position.

I don't think Fielder is on the way, and I don't know if I want him. However, I'm not convinced they are out.

You forgot to sign back in as Drop In

Improvement is improvement. As incremental as it may be. Worst case, this is probably Stewart's last chance as a starting gig. If he fails here, he will probably become decent glove and a bat with some pop off the bench.
