This is quite possibly the worst sports talk radio show in the world. Both of these men are devoid of any semblance of talent. Their voices are so creepily similiar that sometimes I think it's just one guy having a conversation with himself. The next they say something thought provoking or entertaining will be the first. It is downright criminal that a station in the third largest market in the United States has two no talent hacks stinking up their airwaves.

It's a dead horse at this point, and clearly no one at the station cares, but this two are just two stuttering, breathy wastes of time. At least they don't scream and yell about "controversial" things to get a pandering rise out of the idiots who happen to be listening, but they are awful. Des Moines, IA awful.

You know what might fix this show. If they did The Pulse

It's like Mitch allows because they do nothing terrible.

It's sounds like a forced conversation between 2 guys who actually do get along. I highly doubt if you overheard them talking at a bar, they would sound anything like this.

Actually, I think they would.

I remember a women once described Richard Roeper by saying, "Each column answers the question, 'What would the most boring guy in the bar say about this subject?'" I'm reminded of that every time I hear these two dopes. They're not going to say anything the slightest bit controversial. They won't give you any take on any subject that is anything other than mainstream. I don't think it's an act. That's who these guys are.

But there is an audience for that. Because there are thousands of guys exactly like them in Chicago. They're not particularly smart, but they aren't drooling morons either. Suburban goofs who went to Big Ten universities and then moved to Chicago. Cheer on the Cubbies in the bleachers for a few years. Then meet "The One". Live with her in the city for a couple more years. Get married. Back to the suburbs. Kids are next. We won't talk about the inevitable divorce at this time. It's like a video game approach to life. Joe O. is a couple levels ahead of Connor but they're the same guy. And they're just like everybody else.

Give me a show with Tall Midget and Beardown. I can sell ads on that.

What you left out was that it was Roeper's wife! g'hoy!

Worst Roeper column I ever read was when he listed his favorite songs from his iPod and painstakingly made sure to include rap, lest anyone ever think that Richard Roeper was anything less than with it.

Connor has talent.

It hasnt been tapped and putting him next to the worst person to ever speak into a microphone isnt helping.

No, the worst person to ever speak into a microphone would be Dustin Rhoades.

I actually like Joe and Connor. It's at the very least better than Joe and Rock Mamola's show was.

I'll start the one-man bandwagon...

Yes, Joe O. and Rock was truly dreadful radio. And Connor does have the likable radio personality and pleasant voice of a guy who could work anywhere in Chicago or nationally. He and Rongey are the two Score guys I would say that about. But they have to avoid becoming Score-ified. Once you get in the mud with bernstein and company, it's probably going to be difficult to be seen as a corporate professional.

It's quite a trick to avoid sliding into the Score pigpen. I suspect that's the biggest reason Mully & Hanley try their best to separate their show from the others. You can hear Rongey struggle with it everyday. He wants to be one of the boys but not at the expense of that Cardinal play-by-play gig. So far Connor has stayed above it.

I think Brian Paruch created the template for remaining professional despite working in a shithouse. He didn't allow himself to be defined by the role Mancow forced him to play. And like the proverbial tortoise passing the hare, I suspect he will one day be a bigger Chicago media personality than Mancow- if he isn't already. The King can do any on-air job in radio- sports, music, comedy, straight man. I could see him having his own show on WGN in fifteen years.

If it has to be between two longtime Chicago radio sidekicks, I'd rather have Paruch doing 'GN overnights than freaking Bill Leff.

I have mixed feelings about your assessment above. While it's true that Paruch is generally well-informed and possesses the requisite level of professional polish to speak somewhat intelligently on a broad range of topics and fill a variety of on-air roles, the flexibility that you site as his greatest strength may also be his most significant weakness. That is, he personifies the old cliche of being a jack-of-all-trades and master of none. In general I find his on-air presence so smooth that it is entirely nondescript, his generic adaptability so great that he comes off as sounding, well, generic. He is a persona who is almost completely devoid personality. I don't dislike him, but I don't hate cheese sandwiches made from Wonder Bread, either. They provide a means for subsisting after all--just not the elements of a feast.

Or were you basically saying the same thing I was, given your reference to WGN? I guess I don't think of WGN as the same kind of haven for the radio undead as I once did since I tend to enjoy Nick DiGilio's show quite a bit.

I guess I like Paruch a bit more than you do, but our opinions of him arent radically different.

1)  That's absolutely the perfect description of Roeper's work. Now that I have heard it, I'll never forget it. It's amazing how some of the world's most inane thinkers are also seemingly anesthetized by their aura of self-satisfaction.

2)  If you could sell ads for that, you really are a supercloser!

I like Finfer! He knows nothing about sports, but I find his brand of irritated sarcasm quite engaging. He has stolen a lot of Mac's shtick, but performs it a lot better than Mac currently does.

Guys, I don't mind what Joe & Connor bring to the table. In fact, these two will sub for Laurence Friday night at 6p on 670 The SCORE & 670thescore.com.

JORR, I agree with your thought, it's basically the impression they give, not even a question, but I have sat in a bar with Joe O and he isnt that boring and Conor sounds like he might be a bit cooler when he sits with BB, but when they do a show, it should be called White Bread Samwich with Mayo!

A post I made in July:

Curious Hair wrote:
One evening a few weeks ago, I flipped on the radio to listen to WFMT and wind down a little, but I had my dial set to the Score, and so I stayed on it for a minute because I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Here was Connor McKnight talking about how Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final was coming up, but he had no interest in it. Apparently all his friends were telling him about how nothing beats an NHL Game 7, but he wasn't buyin' it. Instead, he'd rather watch college football on New Year's Day, or early rounds of March Madness. So here I am, as aghast as anyone can be with evening sports talk radio, asking "How could it be that a guy who had been on whatever the Score called its Blackhawks beat come on the air and start talking about how hockey is inferior to college sports? Don't they realize how weird it seems to have a so-called hockey reporter--albeit barely one--go on the air and break bad on the very sport he sporadically covers?" Then who I thought was Connor McKnight identified himself as Joe Ostrowski.

This conversation relates to the current state of media in general, and radio in particular.

When Dahl and North first came on the scene they were a breath of fresh air. Real guys with real voices in a sea of polished and phony professionalism. But I think we've come full circle when every douchebag behind a microphone has an annoying voice, a few obnoxious catch phrases designed to provoke the audience, and, worst of all, doesn't really know shit about anything.

Within the current reality, it's guys like Paruch that are the breath of fresh air. Guys that take the time to actually learn who John Wall is when March rolls around and Tournament talk is unavoidable. Even if college hoops is something they don't care anything about. Most of us do things on our jobs we don't care anything about. We don't have the luxury of being proudly ignorant. "Hey! I'm a know-it-all who doesn't know anything! Let me explain the mechanics of a "pump-and-dump" to you. Just as soon as I'm done diagnosing Brent Seabrook's concussion and removing Larry Bird from the Hall of Fame."

listening to these two give their much-needed thoughts on the recent air jordan riots and consequently their paradigms for the purchase and usage of basketball shoes was like taking a bath in whole milk.
