Yeah I guess seeing an underage child being taken from behind by a Dothraki wouldn't fly outside of Alabama and Pennsylvania.

yeah one thing i didn't really like in the first few books was how young everybody was, even though it's probably accurate according to the time period he is using (middle ages thereabouts). the casting for dany was sensational.

Just finished the book today, here are some of BR17's thoughts....

George R R Martin- YOU DIRTY MOTHERFUCKER HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU KILL OFF EDDARD?

Cersei and Jamie Lannister - I hope both of you incestuous piece of shit cocksuckers die in the fire that is supposed to claim BRick.

Joffrey Baratheon- You little milquetoast pussy. I hope Robb Stark fucks your dead carcass in the ass in front of your boyfriend, you closeted little pillow biter.

Sansa Stark- All of this is your fault you dumb vapid Caller Bob. You had best better redeem yourself in Clash of Kings.

Daenerys Stormborn ( the age she is from the TV series) Can I buy you a drink?

EDIT- I have to say though that so far I think Tyrion is my favorite character, Id like to party with his band of hill tribes too.

I think those were my original thoughts after reading the book as well.

Another one hooked! Welcome aboard BR17, honeyed capon to the left and Dornish wine to the right.

I'll put this here because I think it will be appreciated. Since reading Martin's ASOIAF series I have yet to find any other fantasy that even comes close to it. Well I finally found something that has been as enjoyable and as epic with interesting characters and clever writing. Its not Martin and really I don't want to compare it to that because it is different type of fantasy (more magic and "typical" fantasy unlike the gritty realism of Martin's fantasy) but it is the next best thing I have found.

The First law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie:
The Blade Itself
Before They Are Hanged
Last Argument of Kings

So far I am about halfway through the second book and I am really digging it. Some really great characters to love and to hate. Vivid descriptions and intense action.

There are also two more standalone books set in this universe, Best Served Cold and The Heroes.

Check it out while waiting for Winds of Winter.

I still think I like the Shannara series more than all the rest, but that is most definitely high fantasy. Sword of Truth series is pretty good as well.

Never read Shannara series but a few people have told me to read them. I'll put them on the list.

Sword of Truth? Hot garbage. I don't know when the last time you read them was, but after reading Martin go back and just read the first 3 or 4 chapters of SoT (or any Goodkind novel) and its pure crap. The guy is an awful writer. I made it through 4 and a half books of the SoT series before I couldn't take the unintentional comedy and predictability of it.

The first two SOT books were okay, predictable but okay. I actually read the whole thing...I have a hard time not finishing things and the series got worse. Not surprising when I learned that Goodkind is a disciple of Ayn Rand. My concern for George R. R. Martin is that he will go the way of Robert Jordan and write a couple more luke-warm books and die. At least for Jordan's wheel of time series, the author they got to finish the series is actually a really good writer. The two books written by Brandon Sanderson are easily the best books since the third one Jordan wrote. I can't wait for the next and final one.
I'm right now reading Sanderson's "The Way of Kings" it's the first book of his series and it's a monster (1000+ pages). I'm 40% of the way through it and I'm rather enjoying it.

actually what's happening now with "song" is exactly why i don't like reading fantasy--it's starting to get VERY long winded and too complex for its own good.

what i loved about the first 3 books, and even the 4th, is how intriguing the characters were. "dance" really let me down. i hope he can get it together for the last 2 books but they're starting to feel more like standard fantasy rather than something SO much more than that.

I believe that Martin has fallen prey to phenomenon that happens too much in literature. The literary equivalent of "I'm Keith Hernandez." Early on their editors can direct the author a bit more, when the author gets a bit of fame with his or her writing they stop listening to their editors and/or their editors stop trying to rein in the author. I saw this with Jordan (the last three books he wrote were awful and ridiculously long), Rowling (the last Harry Potter book was bad) and now I'm starting to see it with Martin after all, Crow & Dragon were originally supposed to be one book but he couldn't find a way to make it one book. Bullshit that's where a good editor comes in and gets rid of a good chunk of the crap. I believe there was one pretty good novel in the last two books.

well, it happens to any creative person who gains power. we're not supposed to have power. we're supposed to be subdued...that's what keeps us angry and keeps the fire going. once that's out, then you're mailing it in.

i don't necessarily agree about the last HP book; i enjoyed it, especially the ending. however, she was under immense pressure to get that manuscript out and i think that had she been able to write it under the same circumstances she wrote the first one, it would've had more "to it" rather than a mostly chase story.

i still think the best entry was "half-blood prince" but my favorite was "goblet" because of the change in tone.

I was always an Azkaban fan, you should hear the Contemporary Lit professor here go off on the last HP book...she is still mad about it. "If that book had an editor and she was given time to write it then I'm sure it wouldn't have been Harry's camping trip. Also, how can it be Hogwarts year 7 when he spend practically no time at Hogwarts?" She takes it personally I think b/c she team-teaches with three other professors (each fit a house's personality) a Harry Potter course and the HP books are one of her specialties. Fun class, she sorts the students into houses using a house sorting personality quiz. She had me take it to test it out. Apparently, I'm a prototypical Slythern. Who knew? Oh, who am I kidding, I knew.

eh...reminds me of my film professor who never shut up about how much he hated steven spielberg. this was a guy who pronounced "rather" as "rahthur"...asshole.

i would love to tell this teacher that i not only loved the last HP book, but that stephanie meyer is one of the best literary figures in the history of writing. just to see her explode.

I don't think her head would explode. She would just kill you. Her office is next to mine and listening to her rant is one of the perks. She amuses me in much the same way this board does. Oh and she wished Martin would knock off his other projects and focus on this series. As she puts it, this is his life's work.

well that i agree with.

but it always amuses me when readers or fans suddenly think the author owes them something personally.

This is a great analogy

I got through Book 6 or 7 of Wheel of Time before I had to stop. After the 3rd book it was the same book just a different name.

Sorry for the thread derailment - back on track now!

one last derailment... Wikipedia what happened in all the books and read the ones Sanderson has written. He wrote the last two and he is writing the finale right now. Major upgrade.

I liked CoK. Some good characters introduced there. And you start to be introduced to the religious elements of the book.
