Seattle Seahawks 38, Chicago Bears 14
Fabulous: Bears run defense. Remember how we noted two weeks ago that it might be time to take Marshawn Lynch seriously? Well, the Bears weren't convinced. Despite facing umpteen short fields and sudden possessions after turnovers, they shut down what had been a very effective Seattle running game. Lynch was held to 42 yards on 20 carries, and the rest of the team had 10 carries for 18 yards. Six of Lynch's carries went for no gain or a loss. This defense deserves better than …

Flop: Caleb Hanie, who serves as another example of why you can't take one quarter of action very seriously. In last year's playoffs, Hanie came in after Jay Cutler got hurt and Todd Collins 0 for 4 performance basically signed the death warrant on his own career. The Bears took Hanie's play as a sign that he was ready to be Jay Cutler's primary backup, and while he was an upgrade over the atrocious Collins, he's not an NFL quarterback. After his latest start, Hanie's thrown 102 passes and completed 51 of them, for a completion percentage at an even 50 percent. He's thrown nine interceptions, producing an interception rate of 8.8 percent. Nobody has thrown interceptions that frequently over 100 or more pass attempts in 23 years! Steve Grogan narrowly beat it out in 1988. After you adjust for the era Hanie plays in, pro-football-reference.com suggests that Hanie's been worse at avoiding picks than anybody in NFL history since the merger. Hanie's also been sacked on a whopping 14.5 percent of his dropbacks. PFR suggests that only three players since the merger, after adjusting for era, have gone down more frequently. Bottom line: Caleb Hanie might be the worst quarterback to throw 100 passes since the AFL merged with the NFL. If Chicago's backup had merely been below average, their defense would likely have been enough to get them into the playoffs. Instead, they will spend their January on the finest golf courses in America.

He's not even the worst backup the bears have had in the last decade. That honor goes to Johnathan Quin or Todd Collins.

I was going to add Craig Krenzel but then I realized he would actually be considered a Bears starter.

*shudder*

I seem to remember Krenzel playing good and beating the Giants(?)

I'm throwing in Rusty Licsh. He played so bad,he was replaced by Walter Payton.

you forced me to look it up:

Krenzel was drafted in the 2004 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, for whom he played the 2004 season. Despite poor passing statistics, Krenzel won his first three starts at quarterback with the Bears, including a win over the San Francisco 49ers, which was at the time starting Ken Dorsey at quarterback, the same quarterback that started for the Miami Hurricanes during the 2003 National Championship game. However, he lost his final two starts with the Bears and injured his ankle, ending his season. In 2005, he was cut by the Bears in the offseason and he signed with the Cincinnati Bengals. He was the third string quarterback on the team behind Carson Palmer and Jon Kitna. He was released in May 2006 due to an elbow injury that he sustained that eventually required Tommy John surgery. Craig has yet to play again in the NFL, though he has stated that he hopes for one more shot at football.[citation needed] He also shares the distinction of being a two-time Fiesta Bowl MVP with fellow Ohio State Buckeye A. J. Hawk.

119.7 yards per game...3 TD, 6 INT...and as I said, 52.5 rating.

That isn't pretty. I believe the Bears defense was strong back then.

He WON his first 3 starts. End of argument.

This was my first thought when I read the question too. And it's too painful to even do the research to find out the truth. The Chicago Bears history of bad quarterbacks is long.

Lousy teams, just like Hanie got to play. I DO remember watching him beat the Giants by hitting a deep pass that year. I watched him play. He wasn't great but did some good things.

You can argue till your Honda Fit Blue in the face BUT a 3-2 record at QB is better than 0-4.

We're comparing QB skill, not team records.

Alex Smith's 49'ers are 11-3. Is he a better QB than Phillip Rivers? Matt Ryan?

Smith, Ryan and Rivers are also 9, 10 and 11 in quarterback rating rankings so far this year too... in that order. Interesting.

It's not his fault. He did not choose the name Caleb. If his name were Charlie we'd be winning.

the 3-2 record was the team's record, not just the QB's. on the flip side, the 7-9 saints of '07-'08 had a fairy red-hot drew brees at the time (roughly 90 passer rating, 28 td's). but he only got 7 wins!!!!

krenzel was godawful. all you had to do was watch the games (which i did) to see that he couldn't read a defense, had very little arm strength or accuracy, and those games "won" were 90% by the defense. that's why he isn't in the league. it's pretty simple.

when you have to dig up college stats to show how "good" this QB was (ahem, danny wuerffel), you're doing worse than grasping at straws--you're grasping at the empty container those straws were in.

All I remember about Krenzel was that he would hit the deep bomb to Bernard Berrian once a game, and the rest of the game was major suckage. Still not as bad as Johnathan Quin though.

quinn was probably as bad as i've seen...i think i remember someone who reported on the bears saying that he'd come back to the huddle and/or sidelines literally "shaking".

the worst thing about him was he was the OC'S "guy". kinda like andy reid bringing in doug pederson when he first came into the eagles organization.

Todd Collins was the QB when Joe Gibbs' Redskins went to the NFL Playoffs a few years ago, 312.

I thought when the Bears signed him as a free agent last season, Collins was going to be sufficient enough in the event Jay Cutler got hurt. Needless to say, Todd couldn't throw his way out of a paper bag when he started that forgettable game in Charlotte vs. the just as bad Jim Clausen and the Panthers the Sunday after Cutler was out with a concussion in that "Sunday Night Football" train wreck vs. the Giants at the Meadowlands. It also appeared as if there were politics involved behind the scenes with Collins being #2 on the depth chart and Hanie, who was also injured in the preseason game in San Diego over a year ago, listed as #3.

All that being said, it would behoove the Bears to look long & hard at a veteran backup QB in the offseason in the event that Cutler gets injured again and is forced to miss multiple weeks such as the broken thumb on his throwing hand right now.

If anyone's wondering about the worst Bears' QB, I think the combo of Jonathan Quinn, Craig Krenzel & Chad Hutchinson are in the team photo circa 2004, Cade McNown & Henry Burris are among the worst QBs in the long history of the franchise.
