Think long term. These guys aren't going to have a huge impact on 2012. Wood may, but the prospects are long term. Marshall was never going to get you "can't miss" type guys. Marshall just had very little value to the 2012 Cubs. Having a great middle reliever (who you control for 1 year) on a really shitty team is a huge waste.

Wasted words. You're just going to get frustrated.

 fatties? nah..doubt you could even pull my scraps...most women are around 130 lbs and 5 foot 5..torreyes is too small to make it in the bigs...the fact that you disagree makes me even more confident in my thinking.you are the typical cubs frat boy homer, singing go cubs go in the bleachers after a 3-2 win in august when they are 17 games back.

that is why you move marshall in june/july to a contender and get a real prospect, not 2 bustouts and a bad 5th starter

Instead of self flagellation and wearing hair shirts, I engage whistler312. I find it purges me of unpure thoughts and stops me from touching myself at night.

I stand by my Quade thoughts. Which were: I dont want Sandberg hired, give the guy a chance and see what he can do. He did nothing and sucked shit. He got fired. I never said he was the second coming of LaRussa or Torre.

I'm confused by the addition of Dave Sappelt (24) in this trade. From what I've read he looks like a 4th or 5th outfielder and if that's the case why didn't they just protect Ryan Flaherty (25) rather than losing him in the rule 5 draft? Flaherty has much more power and is more versatile because he can play the outfield along with 2B and 3B. Plus he's a left handed hitter which gives him even more value. Sappelt had a slightly higher minor league OPS (.821-.809) and more stolen bases but an awful success rate (63%).

It seems to me they wasted a piece of this trade that could have been used on another badly needed young pitcher when they could have simply protected Flaherty who looks to be the more useful player.

Yes indeed you are confused...AGAIN. Sappelt has only ever played the outfield (401 minor league games mostly in CF and 33 MLB games) if you look up his defensive metrics in both the majors and minors and you will see that his range factor is at or around 2.5 (as a point of reference not comping him in anyway Torii Hunter is 2.3...Curtis Granderson 2.7) Flaherty never played outfield until last year when it became apparent that his hitting was better then his glove. The outfield experiment proved he could not play outfield as his range factor was under 1.5 in 61 games of his 4 season 433 game minor league career while only playing the corner spots. (again as a comp Adam Dunn was about a 2.0 in his MLB of days and Yonder Alonso in his minor league career was 1.47). I hope this clears up your confusion.

IN summation:
Sappelt IS an OUTFIELDER who can and has played most of his professional baseball career as a CF
Flaherty is lefty bat who can not play the the field (both infield and outfield).

One of the stated goals of the new northside regime is run prevention Sappelt fits Flaherty does not.

The Cubs have center fielders Brett Jackson, Jae Hoon Ha , Matt Szczur and maybe Junior Lake in the minors. Certainly Reed Mantle and Ryan Flaherty can serve as the 4th and 5th outfielders until they are major league ready. Run prevention starts with good pitching and not with a 4th or 5th outfielder no matter his minor league defensive metrics.

Brett Jackson: maybe called up by mid-year 2012
Jae-Hoon Ha : finished last year at AA and will spend at least another year there and is at least 3 years away late 2014- . 2015
Matt Sczur: still learning to play baseball after giving up football who after tearing up the Midwest league ( I am sure you . . saw him at Peoria and Kane County) struggles at High A possible late 2013
Junior Lake: another hitter who is a below average maybe even brutal fielder ...who at this point has played ZERO games in
the outfield at any level... many scouts see him switching to the mound since he does have a plus arm.. how . 2015 sound to you.

Do you think they may move Byrd? Eat Soriano's contract? Building up depth is not a sin.

Why the love for Flaherty? He CAN NOT field at all at any position..wait until Baltimore tries him at 3rd base...and then 2nd base and then OH wait the AL has the DH ..there ya go.

OK if the Cubs should have held out for a pitching prospect give us a name?

The entire Cubs organization is devoid of pitching in both the major and minor leagues. They have to start stock piling arms and not reserve outfielders because they obviously have plenty of those and others aren't difficult to find. I think Theo and the boys missed a golden opportunity to address a glaring need in the organization by trading one of the best left handed relievers in the NL for spare parts.

Then why were you going on about Flaherty?

Just admit it Keyser, Inquistor got the best of you in this discussion. It's cool, even the best leave a hanging curve ball out over the plate once in awhile.

Flaherty was already in the organization and could easliy have served as a temporary spare part. All they had to do was protect him in the rule 5 draft. That way they wouldn't have had to waste a piece of this trade on a 4th or 5th outfielder like Sappelt and used that piece on a badly needed pitcher which was the point of my initial post.

Try to follow along, Sweetie.

agreed...4th and 5th outfielders are a dime a dozen..there is no reason why jackson is not going to start this season..reed johnson is a good 4th outfielder if you are a playoff team..no reason to have him taking at bats away from the youth on a 70 win team....wee willie keeler would never make it in todays game..a lot has changed in 80 years

Jocketty sees him as a starter or a closer. This year he will be middle relief / setup.
