That sort of thing? Then sure. The chances are pretty high that they will say something stupid. I hear it on multiple shows all day long. Elmhurst Steve calls Mac with a bad baseball thought and since they are chummy, Mac has no problem with the sheer level of stupidity in the call. Steve in Elmhurst (same guy) calls Bernstein and Berns calls him a retard. The producer doesn't type "this guy is dumb, put him on", he doesn't have to. Chances are if you are calling, it's probably going to be bad anyway. Mac just interacts differently with the caller so people don't tend to notice this sort of thing until Bernstein goes ape shit. Then everyone says "They purposely put idiots on the air". Nope. Not the case. Same idiot, different outcome...

No dude thats not what appears on the screen. Its way more specific than that.

Jim wants to say Caleb hanie might be better than Cutler

Tyrone wants to talk Hawks power play and Hossa

Adolf wants to talk about the Bulls lack of a #2 guard

Guess who Berns is punching up first?

Here is where the decision is made. The next few minutes of the show can be

A Hawks powerplay discussion

A Bulls 2 guard discussion

A make fun of meatball fans segment

Are you really saying the hosts dont control who gets on the air? Or they dont pick out the ones they want?

The order doesn't matter. They will all get through. And they are probably all dumb and bad.

The order in which they are put through is different than your original statement. The other two seemingly normal callers will get through as well. We have no way of knowing who gets through first or anything like that. Some days everyone seems dumb, sometimes there are three or four good calls in a row.

The producers I've talked to have always said they don't set any of this shit up at all.

The "dumb callers getting through" on one show more than another thing is incorrct, imo.

Not the guy named Adolf for obvious reasons.

There is a percentage of callers that is just flatout dumb. But others are simply made to look dumb for entertainment purposes. That's fine. I often enjoy it. And I always enjoy talking about it. The way the call is handled once the caller is on-air is a huge part of it.

Ivan, it's obvious that you're a really intelligent guy, but I have no doubt bernstein could make you look stupid. Not because he's smarter than you, but because he has the power to talk over you and hang up on you at will.

Let's look at how the hosts might handle a caller who said Tyler Flowers needs to play most of the games because he will hit more than AJ. I'll begin by saying I think it's just an uninformed idea. It doesn't make the caller an idiot.

Les might give him a condescending chuckle and say, "I don't know about that. AJ Pierzynski is a career .285 hitter. We'd love to see Tyler Flowers get anywhere close to that. Thanks for the call."

Depending on danny's mood, B&b might come right out of the box like this:

li'l danny: "*EXHAUSTED SIGH* What makes you think that? What evidence do you have that Tyler Flowers can hit more than .200? It's gonna be another one of those days. I'm not doing this show again.

Terry: "Yeah, uh, eh, the Sox fans are out in full force and it's only January. Baseball retarded."

It's more interesting when the hosts disagree about something, but Terry won't challenge danny even when he agrees with the caller bernstein is lambasting. The other day I heard Rosenbloom try to stupidize a caller for saying that signing Peppers might not have been the best move. "Peppers is by far the best player on the team." Then Rozner almost agreed with the caller that in today's offense-minded NFL with Cutler in place that money could have been spent better elsewhere. I guess the caller suddenly wasn't so stupid.

Oh, like when someone calls the studio instead of the score contest hotline and Bernstein goes right to them? Nah, that happens on every show...

Not true.

Not even close to true. There are days when B and B take like 4 calls total....you think only 4 callers called that day?

I think your whole theory is flawed if you think thats true.

Lots of callers dont get on the air on every show every day.

Its not a set up like they meet pre show and decide to get some dumb callers.

Its just picking callers who fit the show's direction.

Oh and Ivan, I hope you arent falling into the "Im a better, more informed fan than the average fan" theory.

Yes, callers in general are a little dumber but not the level you describe.

The difference is the way the hosts respond. While M&H embrace the dumb caller and make dumb ass jokes of their own, Rongey will get pissed with the same guy, yell and eventually hang up on him. The same guy gets through on both shows. There is no conspiracy to put dumb callers on the air. Just my opinion based on listening to sports tal radio over the years, but most people who call these shows are morons or weirdos anyway...
There is one difference though. How they respond can attract more dumb callers. For instance, when B&B rip on some dumb hockey fan who thinks fighting is the best part of hockey they'll get more dumb callers saying that. In many cases then, they start to take more calls and the cycle continues.

All shows have dumb callers but some shows encourage them more than others and then use them as a vehicle for either really bad or really funny radio.

Ivan, if you think that the caller descriptions are that vague and that every caller gets through, I could see thinking what you do.

Im almost certain that the descriptions are way more detailed and lots of callers are turned away.

Can anyone confirm/deny this?

I mean sometimes the host already knows the specific subject the caller wants to talk about

Berns will even say : Oh well this oughta be fun....

True story

Me neither....

I dont "get" the need to point out stupidity. Not just sports but in anything.

You see a lot of it on Facebook too. People ripping on "All the idiots who _______"

Wouldnt it be better to seek out more informed people than to bitch about the dumb ones?

I guess that doesnt make people feel smart though.

You can probably count on on two hands the number of sports related debates I have been involved in here over the last 6+ years. Just never been my thing.

Called one show in my life. MJH.....ask us anything type of show. Had to talk to my guy Jurk...

I think the amount of time on hold effects things too. I've called the Score like twice and got on within a couple of minutes.

With MJH and CJH, I've been on hold for 40+ minutes at times. I'm driving home and I'll put the cell on speaker phone and if they get to me ok. If I get home or wherever and I haven't been on yet, I just hang up. I'm sure there are idiots like Steve that will sit on hold for that long and even longer to get their dumb point across, others just hang up.

I forgot to respond to something here. I love RPB's memory. I forgot my rant about the Bears/Packers game. By the way, how's my Gordon Beckham prediction going?

Replace it with one of my mildly entertaining bits.
