Off topic, but i didnt think it warranted a new thread.

Heard Theo on WGN radio at lunchtime...Cubs Talk or some segment....just caught the tail end of it but Theo was talking about the Marshall trade and a phone conference he was to be on regarding it. He said he needed a quiet place to take the call and was by Fenway and stopped in there and used his old office to participate in the call. Guess he still is spending time in Boston and still comfortable enough to keep his old office at Fenway. Just found that semi-interesting...then again, maybe not! :?

Rumor is Z for Volstad with the Cubs eating most of Z's salary of course.

Was asking if it was a former employee. I'm guessing it's probably a Cubs employee.

Looks like a done done, Z for Volstad. No word on how much salary Cubs are eating. Volstad stats are pretty ugly but who cares. Good riddance to Z.

6:25pm: The Cubs will absorb all of Zambrano's $18MM salary less the MLB minimum, tweets Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.

6:15pm: Chris Volstad is joining the Cubs in the deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (Twitter link). The 6'8" right-hander posted a 4.89 ERA with 6.4 K/9, 2.7 BB/9 and a 52.3% ground ball rate in 165 2/3 innings for the Marlins in 2011. His career numbers (4.59 ERA, 5.8 K/9, 3.1 BB/9, 50.4% ground ball rate) show he's a steady if unspectacular back-of-the-rotation option. However, he's homer prone and struggles against left-handers, as MLBTR's Mike Axisa pointed out earlier in the offseason.

The 25-year-old former first rounder projects to earn $2.6MM through arbitration in 2012 and will remain under team control through 2014, which makes him a relatively affordable medium-term option.

Chris Volstad could be a cheap rotation option for the Cubs

By John Arguello, November 26, 2011 at 12:36 pm Just 4 years ago, Chris Volstad was considered the top prospect in the Florida Marlins farm system, ranking ahead of guys like Mike Stanton and Gaby Sanchez. Things have changed since then. Last year he was just 5-13 with a 4.89 ERA and, according to MLBTradeRumors, he is now a non-tender candidate.

There are some things to like. Volstad continued to show good control, walking just 2.66 batters per 9 innings. His xFIP was a very respectable 3.64, perhaps indicating that he could bounce back with some better luck and some better defense.

His stuff is solid but not spectacular. His ceiling is more of a #3 starter than a front of the rotation type, though he has pitched more like a bottom of the rotation type for most of his career. At his best Volstad works in the low 90s and features a slider, a curveball, and a change-up. When he was the Marlins top prospect, it was his curve that was considered his go-to breaking pitch but he's turned more and more to his slider the past two seasons, throwing it nearly 20% of the time last season while throwing his curveball less than 10% of the time for the first time in his career.

That being said, it was his fastball that proved most hittable last season, even though there was no drop in velocity. Some feel that he's just around the strike zone too much with it and hitters are simply digging in. If the Cubs' scouts see something they can change in terms of approach perhaps they can take a flyer on the young pitcher. He's still just 25 and is under team control for the next three seasons. It's minimal risk and considering his age and talent, there's still some upside left.

DAMN Josh Johnson is a solid number 1. Zambrano should be able to get his shit together under Ozzie. Throw in Buehrle and Nolasco and you have a very solid rotation. Not to mention Reyes,Ramirez,Stanton.

That being said I hope they fucking tank

Was Volstad going to be non-tendered? Not a lot of teams interested in the Big Dumbass so this was probably the best they could do.

At the end of the day, or season if you prefer, the next season is not about winning. Its about placing pieces in place to win in future seasons.

This is a great deal for the Marlins. The Cubs would have been better off releasing him. They got absolutely nothing for him. I expect Z to have a monster year. He's looking to get paid again and I think Ozzie will keep him focused. I expect some Cubs fans to question why Theo didn't get more for Z sometime in May or June. If you're going to dump salary you do it with a guy that has more years and money on the books. This is the Hendry formula. Trade a guy when his value couldn't be lower.
