Isn't it ironic that a guy whose name is synonymous with prohibition would pitch for a team made popular by drunk frat boys?

By the way, you'll be hearing a variation of that thought on the radio in the next couple of days by people "who don't read the board".

Over/Under on the date the first Volstead Act headline appears in a local newspaper...April 15.

Under for sure.

It might not be a big 'headline', but that phrased will almost certainly be used at some point during Spring Training.

In French Soccer:
Ligue 1 bottom club Ajaccio have made their first signing of the January transfer window, snapping up Brazilian frontman Eduardo from Lens on a deal until June 2013.

Here is the "scoop" on the new Cubs 5th starter:
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/chicago_cubs/index.html

Volstad, a 6'8" right-hander, posted a 4.89 ERA with 6.4 K/9, 2.7 BB/9 and a 52.3% ground ball rate in 165 2/3 innings for the Marlins in 2011. His career numbers (4.59 ERA, 5.8 K/9, 3.1 BB/9, 50.4% ground ball rate) show he's a steady if unspectacular back-of-the-rotation option. However, he's homer prone and struggles against left-handers, as MLBTR's Mike Axisa pointed out earlier in the offseason.

Time to Repeal the Volstead Act
by Joe Cowley

Another start and yet another shelling of the Cubs 5th starter. They could have had Zambrano do the same thing. Oh wait, under the guidance of the one of the most intelligent (and dare I say sexy) managers in MLB history, Zambrano has re-invented himself and is in the running for the NL Cy Young award. 98% of the credit has to go to Ozzie for his calming influence on his fellow countryman. Throughout spring training and the early parts of the season, you saw the happiness reflected in the eyes of Carlos. That kind of happiness only comes from being in close proximity to one of mankind's greatest treasures, Ozzie Guillen. Ozzie has made the Miami Marlins in his image and as you would expect, that image is magnificient. Look out in October for the Miami Ozzies, I think South Beach may finally get the parade that LeBron and Wade were not able to deliver.

I was thinking more along the lines of "Cubs Tire of Volsted Act: young pitcher prohibited from entering the starting rotation"

Lily gave up a lot of 'taters, too. I'm sure this guy will be lights out in the cold month of April. After that,he will start giving up the long ball. Hopefully not too many.

Thats not bad, but need to ratchet up the SMARM factor. You are at a level 6 SMARM. Cowley operates around 8-9

Steve Stone is the perfect 10

Where are Joe Buck and Bryant Gumbel on that scale?
