but you can't stop that with a payoff...other than as an incentive not to testify. They can prosecute without her...in theory.

I would think that you are much less likely to be tried for a crime if the only witness and accuser are saying you didn't do it or at least is unwilling to testify.

If anything, the damage of this would be heightened if she is at least willing to testify and still maintains that he did it.

You don't think her recanting her story tomorrow would make a big difference in terms of public perception?

He has not been charged with anything. He has been accused of something. Just because there is an accusation does not mean there is a victim and does not mean Castro is guilty of something.

Hopefully the allegations prove baseless and this is the only incident like this in the guys career. Hopefully he learns from this as well.

And yes, it is very surprising that there aren't many more examples of athletes getting accused of shit like this.

No, but he lives a lifestyle that puts himself and others like Castro at much greater risk than a more quieter lifestyle. I do acknowledge that being drunk at 3:30AM might have had nothing to do with this incident. Starlin Castro may have bigger issues than we know. But it's probable that this situation would have been avoided if Castro turned in at an earlier hour and called it a night.

No it isn't. It's something that's very difficult to prove and there's a stigma for the woman. In fact, it's exactly the opposite of what you're suggesting. I'm certain there are many athletes who rape- just as there are non-athletes who rape- and it goes unreported due to the circumstances the woman knows she will have to face.

As evidenced here where immediatley people are questioning her story. The fact that this woman did say something, that looks bad for Castro.

I didn't say sexual assualt, I just said trouble. Could be a sexual assault, could be a fist fight, hell it could just be a bunch of drama with the girlfriend. Point being not a lot of good comes out of going to a 4 or 5am bar.
