I hate these "best of" arguments. As a drummer myself I dont base it on solos or over the top fills. Neil Peart is amazing, but all the changes and fills drive me nuts. I am more of the Bonzo as best ever school due to his rocking the fuck out while keeping the song driving and making you want to go buy some drums.

Yes because no one else thinks Zep or Bonham had any talent. (This post sponsored by the Webb auto group, furnishing cars and copper pots to the chicagoland area for over 25 years)

There are some really amazing up and coming drummers out there in the speed metal genre, really pushing the limits. Not a huge fan of that music but you have to marvel at what these kids are doing.

Overall, the most technical guys are of the Marco Minnemann and Thomas Lang ilk, but there's probably some kid in Sweden somewhere right now doing things in his basement that would make those guys shit a brick.

Vinnie Colaiuta is also one of the best overall skilled players out there, right now. Still amazing.

Kind of a subjective thing as it depends on what aspect of drumming you find "inspiring"...

This guy is actually very good. Best drummer is to hard to determine. Most drummers will tell you that its impossible. Some guys are fast but not good at fills. Some guys whale on the double bass but arent versatile.

Neil Peart is still amazing but a lot of guys today have his skill set. I consider him the babe Ruth of Rock drummers.

Steve Gadd is an amazing studio drummer.

Former Journey drummer Steve Smith is very under rated. Unbelievable at Jazz.

Simon Phillips from Toto and formerly Pete Townshend's drummer is great.

Carter Beauford from Dave Mathews is great at very precise and clean.

Alex Van Halen and Tommy Lee are POUND the SHIT OUT OF THE DRUMS drummers.

Stuart Copeland is great at his genre.

In my opinion as a drummer, the most talented drummer right now is Ray Luzier from Korn. Average looking dude but is incredible.

But this young lady is the best Rocker without a penis that I've seen. Check her out!

One of my favorite bands was called End Result. My friend Alan Jones was one of the guitarists. They didn't have a drummer. When asked why not, Alan liked to say, "We think our audience can count."

Anyway, I'm not a big fan of "experimental" music or what might be called noise rock. The vast majority of it is unadulterated wankery. But occasionally some guys will get together and do something interesting.

Here's a drummer serving a piece of music. Anyone who actually plays drums can attest to how difficult playing this piece is, but the playing isn't the slightest bit showy and actually seems rather simple:

I'm a big fan of Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Terry Bozzio, Simon Phillips & Bill Bruford.

Travis Barker isn't in the top 25.

Don't you notice the drums in every song? If you mean drummers who overplay & constantly feel the need to display their dexterity & talents (Peart), then I agree with you 100%.

Perhaps overstated, yet truthful at its core. I have very strict ideas about rock and roll. I shall not try to convince you. It matters little to me if you go through your life wrong.

This is possibly the single most pompous, contrarian thing I've seen on this board in 4.5 years.
