I've read he's better than Rodrigo Lopez, so yeah, just a depth move. Hopefully he never smells the big leagues unless he's traded elsewhere or miraculously develops better stuff.

Cashner must be too injury prone? Thought he was one of our future can't miss pitchers...if there is such a thing.

Well, I think it largely depends on how they view Cashner. This deal makes it appear that they organization views Cashner as nothing but a reliever. Rizzo appears to be the best player moved in this deal and potentially the Cubs future at 1B.

Admittedly it's hard to compare a pitching prospect to a IF, but I really like this.

We just traded Z for Cashner 2.

Excellent trade. Na was a good prospect to give up. Hopefully, Rizzo is the real deal.

Maybe Vogelbach can play centerfield.

I like this move too. Get more young, talented hitters. Less injury-prone.

So will Rizzo be the 1B on opening day or will LaHair?

Rizzo sucked pretty bad last year for the Padres. My guess is the guy who plays better D will be the 1B.

Yes, they made this trade to create a first base controversy. Stop it. If Rizzo isn't the Opening Day starter, he'll have to hit .100 in Spring Training. Unless they can hold back arbitration if he struggles.

I would buy a ticket to see him play center, but this year when the Cubs are 41 games out. Perhaps Mike North could be middle center. Box office.

Plus, the Cubs traded away a prospect strength to solidify a gaping hole in the minors.

Hard to give up a guy in Cashner that throws a legit 100 MPH, but if Rizzo is as good as advertised, then it's a good trade. Cashner of course has the shoulder issue too so who knows, he may turn out to be a bust. I wonder if Cashner has passed the physical?

How is it a controversy? Rizzo is 22. He is now the future. If he starts at AAA, its no big deal. Cubs are going to suck and everyone knows LaHair is just holding the spot warm. If they start LaHair at 1B and he mashes the first half, they can trade him for some prospects.

Given the goal of the new management, the best case scenario is that LaHair looks really good in ST, starts the season at 1B and plays well to make him a tradeable asset.

Not much to see here. Third round pick.

Drafted in the 3rd round in 2010. Sucked last year in A-ball.

I just love how this trade is so the opposite of anything Hendry would have done.

This is a really good move by the Cubs. Rizzo is the left handed power hitter this team has needed. Cashner threw hard but is probably destined to be a reliever.

@espnWD Wayne Drehs
Post Z & Rizzo trades, I can imagine Theo in his best Lou Brown "Major League" voice: "It's coming together, boys. It's coming together."

In his short time here Theo has already traded 2 of Hendry's first round picks

Blue-tinted glasses.

He traded a pitcher whose arm fell off last year for a couple of projects. This is a nothing deal on both ends - not even worth praising or criticizing. Like somebody said earlier, nothing to see here.

He's 22 and OPS +1000 in the minors. He was the Padres #1 prospect. Cashner throws 100, obviously his arm falling off might not be good. Neither one of them is a 'nothing' prospect DB.

Interesting that Rizzo was a 6th round pick by Boston and his minor league stats prior to 2011 weren't that great. Given he sucked badly at the ML level last year, I certainly don't view him as a can't miss prospect. However, since Cashner can't be viewed that way either with the shoulder issues, it has to be viewed as a good risk. But again, he is still just a prospect so we shall see.

We have to trust the Theo brainstrust as they certainly have to know what this kid brings to the table.

He played in Tuscon where it's a launching pad. But he was in the Adrian Gonzalez deal so you know Theo loves the guy.

Theo and Hoyer drafted and developed him in Boston. Hoyer traded for him in San Diego as the center piece of the Adrian Gonzalez deal and now they trade for him again. They love this Kid.

He'll be physically limited but probably just some added depth in the system. He wasn;'t a top 20 propsect for the Padres.
