Breaking news; Chicago Cubs sign LHP Paul Maholm to a 1 yr 4.25 million deal with club opt 6,5 for 2013. 500k B out

Great deal.

it is a great deal. I love the amount of 1-year deals they are giving out to veteran players, not tying themselves up until they see what they have in some of the young players. I am really enjoying this off-season, this is a long time coming.

Sounds like BS mixed with Cubs paranoia

Agreed

Maholm is an excellent pickup. His career record nothing to look at but remember he pitched for Pittsburgh during his whole career. He's an innings eater and for 4M is a bargain for a guy who's going to get you 180+ innings this year. Last year's record is purely decieving...6-14 but a 3.66 ERA and a WHIP under 1.3

more importantly, he was a Cub killer. Pittsburgh was 11-5 against the mighty Cub when Maholm started. Really hoping the guy isn't the second coming of Jeff Blauser.

Yes, I know there is no true correlation here other than a Cub killer comes to town and then has a propensity to suck.

Anytime a Cub killer comes to mind Blauser is my go to thought. What a bum.

Garza's a #2 on every playoff staff last season except the Phillies. Bottom line is he's a young top of the rotation starter and odds are that in 2-3 years when the Cubs are planning to be good he'll be better than anyone they get in a trade. The Cubs can certainly afford to extend Garza and build the rotation around him rather than trade him and hope to find a top of the rotation starter in a couple years.

I totally agree with this. If they do trade him, they damn well better get one helluva package in return. If not, I'd extend him through at least 2015.

You think there is no way the Cubs can acquire a starter as good as Garza for the next 4 years?

Really?

I would have to believe the package they get back will be HUGE. If it scared Brian Cashman away....it has to be something.

Very happy with this signing, too. I think he is an underrated starter. I'm happy with all these moves, but a veteran bat wouldn't hurt. Maybe a middle infield type guy. I want young guys, but with a few vets sprinkled in.

Wrong, no way they go 0-162.

The key prospect rumored to come back to the Cubs is Jacob Turner who is arguably the number 1 prospect in the system. The addition of Garza allows for the Tigers to trade him because it would move guys like Porcello and Scherzer to the 4/5 slots.

Turner would have to be involved, but they are going to want a top-flight fielding prospect too, and at least 1 other mid-level prospect as well.

Wood leaves $9M more on the table last year to play for the Cubs and he's wondering why they aren't willing to give him market value or above. He's been more loyal to the Cubs than any player I've ever seen. Hendry had to force him to take $20M. With Hendry gone they don't feel as if they owe him anything.

they don't owe him shit..he should owe them for all that money hendrys' dumb ass gave him after it was clear to everyone this guy could not stay healthy..i wish epstein offered him nothing..go away..this team does not need an old vet to set up or close on a 75 win team that is trying to get young..and he is guaranteed to be on the d.l. at least 2 times.

:viking:....I can't believe I am saying this. But I agree with whistler.....Kerry Wood is the difference between a 76 win team and a 77 win team. Who cares. And it just seems like pandering to the Cub meatball to bring Kerry Wood back. Maybe he can show Sharkzilla how to do the towel drill.

I never was on the Wood bandwagon. Zambrano had a better Cubs career than Wood and he will be remembered as a headcase and jerkwad which he was and Wood as the good guy but Zambrano was the better pitcher for the Cubs.

I have no problem with Wood coming back. If you put his age, stats, contract, and projected 2012 position in front of me without a name, I probably say it doesn't make sense. However, this is a good move. If Kerry Wood is the only carryover silliness of the last twenty years, I'm good with it. I wonder if we could include a clause in the contract, leading to the elimination of "Go Cubs Go"?

Right. I'm using this as leverage. Kerry Wood comes back, but........

If Ryan Sandbug, or whatever he's being called here now, was hired, I wanted to use it in the mysterious disappearance of Ronnie Woo Woo.

Wood can still pitch and is a nice fall back option if they unload Marmol by the trade deadline. Yes he will probably also be on the disabled list too for a couple stretches but I have no problem resigning him. He also is a good clubhouse and bullpen presence for young pitchers. I believe he helped settle The Shark down last year and he (The Shark) finished the year very strong.

Defnitely interested. RT @RTGeorgeRealtor: @Kevin_Goldstein Finally! Do you think the Cubs are serious players for Cespedes?

I find this very interesting. Goldstein is not in the Rosenthal/Heyman business. I'd love to see this happen.

I highly doubt the Cubs will even make an offer to this guy. People are saying he going to get $10M per year at least. I would rather see the Cubs sign Soler.
