I've been to the Cubs Convention a few times. Wasn't that bad.

My wife is a big Hawks fan, and that's made the convention fun the last couple years. With that experience, I call bullshit on the stereotypes. I thought I'd be the most physically fit person at the convention. Most people are very normal. I imagine the Cubs Convention being a little worse than the Blackhawks.

Paid to go to the Bears convention for one day, would never go back. The "Stuff for Sale" section was kinda cool as the BEars actually had their rummage sale and I got some cool stuff for cheap, but I see 500 people standing in a line for Otis Wilsons signature is amazing.

Snuck into the Cubs convention one year. Well, just kinda walked in, 15 minutes and I was done.

Agree, would never go back

i've got an old junior/high/school friend who's a complete and utter cubs meatball and a half (i think for nearly a full year after his death his facebook avatar was a picture of him and ron santo from one of these conventions: NEVAR FORGET!!!1) and gleaming what he's posted over the last few days, from what i can tell it's basically like some sort of a weird hybrid mix of a cubs-themed party and a "state of the union" type thing.

check out this gem he posted to this FB:

Tom Ricketts is legit. Walked into the hotel at midnight and held a mini press conference with us in the lobby for at least 45 mins. Made sure he shook everyone's hand and answered every question. He's the owner we have waited for.

He is legit. Have no problem with his plan, just the fact it took him 3 years to figure out.

yeah if i were a blue-bleedin' cubs fan i'd definitely be OK with the stuff that's gone on, but you nailed it... waiting/wasting 3 years is what it is...

what do you cubs fans think of hte sketches of that proposed RF bleachers giant patio thing?! they're trying their damndest to get some sort of a modern scoreboard in there without compromising the integrity of the ancient iconic scoreboard which, last i checked, still gets balls/strikes up there faster than all of the electronic ones i see @ other parks.

I guess. I was 8 and it was cool to take a picture with Ryne Sandberg and Bill Madlock

That was 88, during the Baseball card boom so that was a big part of it for me.

I went to the Hawks the year after they won the cup. Fun to get my picture with it. But after about 3 hours there I said never again.

his plan is to make lots of $$$$$$, not win. I don't have a problem with making $$$$, but silver spoon loves to preach how winning the world series is their #1 objective, when he is lying thru his teeth. his #1 goal is to get the city/state to pay for the wrigley rehab so his family can make even more $$$$$ and won't have to borrow the money to do it. they are banking on getting lucky with some young players that they hope can blossom into good players, which could very well happen if theo the vunderkin and his roving band of moneyballers hit on some draft picks and prospect trades. but if they suck the next five yrs, but ricketty spoon gets his free tax money, he won't give a rat's ass what the winning percentage is.

If I was trying not to win I would certainly go after one of the best/expensive GMs in baseball. That seems like the best way to ensure you dont win.

in my humble opinion, it is a PR move that has appeased most fans. player payroll will continue to go down to pay for theo and hoyer. Ricketts is hoping that theo can get the tax money to pay for wrigley rehab. rebuilding will be the mantra the next couple yrs as the cubs suck. hopefully rahm and quinn tell ricketts to fuck off and pay for the rehab yourself. ricketts has no leverage. all their marketing is "come to wrigley. it is an experience" i don't think most fans will fill a stadium in addison or hoffman estates if the team sucks. as for theo/hoyer being the best GM in baseball, they also had a lot of cash to spend in Boston on players, scouts, posting fees for japanese players. if ricketts doesn't get the tax money, he will have to use his extra cash for wrigley, not free agents or player development.

I think that Ricketts wants to do exactly what Boston did. Make lots of money and win. He hired the person that put it all together out there so he is already off to a good start.

i just don't think ricketts will sign off on any decent free agents unless he gets bailed out by govt. tax money. i want the cubs to do well, i just don't like the owners of the team. they bought the team and wrigley knowing full well that the park was falling apart. and now they want the taxpayers to pay for the rehab. they should have negotiated a better price for the team/ballpark, knowing they had to put $300 mil into the park. or walked away from the deal.
