Theo on the compensation situation:

Quote:
“I think you have to put [the compensation issue] in context. In the history of baseball with all the executives that have changed teams, many of which were on lateral moves, let alone those who left for promotions like I did, throughout the history of baseball there’s really only been a handful of instances where there’s been any compensation whatsoever for executives,” Epstein said. “If you wanted to look at precedent, you’d say, ‘Well, whether I’m worth nothing, or something,’ — you would probably get some opinions on that if you ask your callers — the bottom line is when executives change teams there is no compensation. There have been a handful of instances where there is compensation, and that compensation has been pretty reasonable. If you look when Andy MacPhail, who had won two World Series, left on a lateral move from Minnesota to Chicago back in ’94, his compensation was like the 30th ranked prospect in the Cubs system and a little bit of cash.

“So I think when you say there should be compensation here, there should be because we agreed there should be compensation, so that’s part of the gig. But I think you have to look at history and you have to look at the precedent involved and realize there is not precedent for major, major compensation here. But the bottom line is we need to figure this out, and we will. Both sides are still working on it because it was agreed to and you have to live up to your word. If you agree that there is compensation there has to be compensation, and there should be. You look at precedent as a guide and try to do something that’s appropriate given the more than century-old history of baseball.

“Ben and I have been trying to work it out. I think normally Ben and I could work it out, but there’s just a little bit of a different perspective. The expectations were different at the time. We’re trying to figure something out that makes the Red Sox happy, but also fits with a century of baseball precedent. I can honestly say this one has been turned over and discussed in the media a lot more than it has between the clubs. Ben and I have had five conversations on in the last few months. We’ve gotten close but we haven’t gotten it done. Maybe we’ll need some help to get it done. I want both sides to be happy if possible.”

I have no problem with Wood coming back. If you put his age, stats, contract, and projected 2012 position in front of me without a name, I probably say it doesn't make sense. However, this is a good move. If Kerry Wood is the only carryover silliness of the last twenty years, I'm good with it. I wonder if we could include a clause in the contract, leading to the elimination of "Go Cubs Go"?

id be happy with the cubs signing wood to another year. im not understanding how that is a bad thing, as long as he isnt asking for too much. he has been pretty productive out of the bullpen, he seems like a good clubhouse guy, and it would only be for a year. i dont have any problem with the cubs signing any veteran player as long as they are 1-year deals. im not sure how this could be considered a bad move.

Like the deal. 3 plus an option for another 3 is a very fair deal and has no negative impact on rebuild plan.

nah..don't like it..he ain't worth 3 mill..too old and this team does not need a set up guy who will be sidelined numerous times with injuries or blisters.

Money spent on Wood was to make the meatball fans happy. They probably signed him 2 weeks ago and waited to announce it today for the convention.

Regardless of his appeal to the 'meatballs', he again signed for way under his market value. He's not going to be blocking anyone as the set up guy. Good deal.

The meatball appeasing really takes a back seat to this being more of a marketing move. Between merchandising, interviews, appearances and ticket sales he will be well worth the minor investment.

And the fact he can still pitch pretty well.

[quote="Drop In"]RT "@CarrieMuskat: #Cubs confirm Rodrigo Lopez signs Minor League contract. Expect full list of non-roster invitees next week"

The Cubs have re-signed pitcher Rodrigo Lopez, who filled in as a starter late in the season, as an insurance policy against injuries.

Lopez signed a minor league contract but will be invited to spring training and could make $900,000 if he makes the big league roster. The signing was reported in Mexico by a baseball magazine.

Lopez, 36, was obtained from the Braves’ minor league system but made 16 starts after a trade with a 4.42 earned-run average after injuries depleted the Cubs’ staff.

So far,Theo has done just what I had hoped. Getting some decent SP without breaking the bank and now resigning Lopez who did a pretty good job last year considering he came off the scrapheap. 4.42 isn't terrible nowadays. He pitched well in quite a few starts. With a full spring training,he could still make the roster as a "garbage" guy in the middle innings.

it is a bad move

lopez has a career era of 4.82 and is 37 years old..so probably 40, this team is loaded with 5th starters already and needs to get younger not older..there are a half dozen young arms in the minors who can replace a 5th starter or long relief mop up duty man..guys that actually have an upside an need to be evaluated. the same reason why i did not like pena here last year..too old and you are not a contender so evaluate young prospects not old hasbeens.

Right. He's not going to block any of them. Guys in AA or AAA ball who need to get evaluated on the major league level will be.

It's also important to remember that you can't pull a guy from AA ball and give him 30 starts in the majors. When he is getting TJS in two years, you'd be complaining that he was overworked in a garbage year.

The team isn't going to be good this year. Someone needs to eat some of the innings in late July/Early August. This move is fine.

I guess for 260K or whatever for minor league depth, I say fine. But if he pitches for the Cubs for 1.2M as their 10th starting pitcher, then they really have problems in a rebuilding year.

He pitched alot better than I thought he would last year, but frankly, this guy is a batting practive pitcher.

I hope like hell he never tastes the North side this year and maybe they can trade his ass for a sleeper prospect to a desperate team.

disagree..tjs will happen to you from mechanics/genetics..not overwork..you are either going to be healthy like buerhle or maddux or you will be a china doll like kerry wood and mark prior

Okay, then replace TJS with whatever injury you'd like from not being used to the workload.

These two ideas do not go together. You can't really trade a Rodrigo Lopez for any top of prospect unless he pitches on the North side and pitches decently.

Right.

Never thought I'd see such anguish over a minor league contract with a spring training invite.

I said a "sleeper" prospect.

i know you like to think that you know more than me about baseball in general or building a team but you don't..it is not that difficult..good scouts is the key and grow your own arms at the minor league level. even if epstein does not like hendry/wilken prospects he should try to get them up here and see if they can play good for even a few months and trade them for someone you have faith in.epstein making the decisions is a good thing and i know you are a cubs fan but it does not mean you back every move blindly.

I said "any type of" prospect. Meaning absolutely none.

None one trades a prospect of any level for a 36 year old minor league starter. Not a blue chip, not a sleeper, and not any type in between.

Jim Hendry did. Last year.

Rodrigo Lopez does not deserve to be in any kind of conversation....ever....about anything. He can pitch where ever he fits in at the time but he should never be spoken about.

I would wear a sign around Wrigley apologizing to Brett Jackson for not buying into the hype. But no, it's not probable.
