The seven Police Academy films (1984 - 94) are among the wonders of the Eighties, a time when rubbish things were hugely, inexplicably successful. But will the slapstick comedy about a bunch of trainee police misfits stand up to fresh inspection?

Hollywood certainly seems to think so. The entertainment website Variety.com today announced that a young director who has only one television series to his name - an American sitcom called ‘Tosh.0’ - will be at the helm of the franchise’s reinvention. Zabielski was competing against far more experienced Hollywood directors, but seems to have clinched the job on his personal experience in a police academy. He trained as a reserve officer in West Hollywood before starting work as an editor for television shows in 2005.

The new script has already been written by David Diamond and David Weissman (co-writers The Family Man) and will be produced by Police Academy veteran Paul Maslansky.

There have been various unsuccessful attempts at a Police Academy reboot. Two over-the-top television series of the same name failed to capture the spirit of the films. The eighth Police Academy feature film was due to start filming in 2006, with its original cast members, but was shelved at the last minute because Maslansky decided that the Academy needed a complete reinvention. About the new film he says:

“It’s going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians. It'll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we'll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme."

Judging by early reactions on Twitter, fans are sceptical that the "new class" will live up to the original, but most comments are reacting against the lack of imagination shown by Hollywood bosses. The accelerating pace of remakes such as it is, the temptation to push a Hollywood machine that generated $240 million worldwide a little (a lot?) further, was just too great.

Production company New Line is expected to start filming this year, but they are yet to confirm their cast. In August last year, it was suggested that Steve Guttenberg, who played Sgt. Carey Mahoney, would return to the series. However, he has since denied his interest in revisiting Police Academy.

It's unlikely that sound effects wizard Michael Winslow, one of the best loved Police Academy Originals, will be returning either. However, will there ever be a more opportune moment to ressurect his legendary impersonation of Led Zeppelin?

Tosh.0 is far from a sitcom. Also, RIP Steve Guttenberg. I wish you could be in this reboot :(

Bubba Smith's ghost has just tweeted that it has not seen Steve Guttenberg's ghost and its likely he is still alive and merely on a 20 year relativity hiatus.

Rumor has it Steve Guttenberg died in 1991 and was replaced by his brother who took his name ala Gallagher.. He walks barefoot in Police Academy 4.

Steve Guttenberg will dance at YOUR funeral buddy!

However, I can see why people think he's dead...this does make sense....

When Steve Guttenberg died in 1991 his career was still strong and he appealed to an audience, out of no where he goes on a near 2 year hiatus, comes back looking older and doesn't have the timing he once had and all his perfomances seemed lackluster, do to Rudy Guttenberg taking over Steve Guttenberg (comparable to Gallagher selling the rights to his brother the gimmick and act back in late 80's).

The lack of comedic timing is the smoking gun

Bringing him back as the chief would likely be warranted here.

George Gaynes (Commandant Lassard) is still alive -- strangely enough.
