Had totally forgotten that Beltran was still out there. Berkman, Holliday and Beltran is a hell of trio of hitters. If they stay healthy.

Good luck with the staying healthy part.

It would have be a REAL nice trio a few years back, but Beltran is a shell of his former self. Berkman is going to slow down. Holliday is the only real solid guy of the 3.

Red Sox acquired RHP Andrew Bailey and OF Ryan Sweeney from the Athletics for RHP Raul Alcantara, 3B Miles Head and OF Josh Reddick.

I don't like this trade much for either team. Bailey was very good his rookie year but because of injuries has thrown only 49 and 42.1 innings the last 2 seasons. I'm not sure he can be counted on to be Papleboners replacement. Oakland seemed to have picked quantity over quality. Reddick looks like another over-hyped Boston prospect after he was unable to win the evreyday right field job. Head and Alcantara have some upside but are far away from ever making an impact in the bigs.

The Mariners and Yankees have agreed to a trade that will send RHP Michael Pineda to the Yankees in exchange for 1B/DH Jesus Montero.

I like the trade for both teams. The Yankees obviously needed another starter and the Mariners desperatly needed a masher.

With Posada retiring and Montero traded the Yankees may make a run at Prince to DH.

Is this Pineda cat legit? I looked him up and he had an average year though he did it with a low era and he is young and tall.

The Yankees have agreed to a 1/yr contract with Hiroki Kuroda.

So much for the Yankees quiet off season. With these two moves Brian Cashman has done a good job upgrading the starting rotation and he didn't have to break the bank. CC, Kuroda, Pineda, Nova, Hughes/Burnett.

He was lights out in the first half. He hit a rookie wall. Goldstein projects him to be a two, possible one down the road.

Pineda is a nasty motherfucker. I think this is a bad deal for Seattle. Pitchers with stuff like that don't grow on trees. I understand they need to score some runs though.

My initial reaction is the Yankees got the better deal here. Montero is going to be a bitch, but JORR is right. A pitcher like Pineda is difficult to find. I've already seen Montero projected to be a DH.

The Mariners have Hultzen, Walker and Paxton in the minors and all are about major league ready. They can afford to trade Pineda to upgrade the offense.

Gonzalez, Nationals Agree To Five-Year Extension
By Luke Adams [January 15 at 12:49pm CST]
The Nationals and Gio Gonzalez have agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension, the team announced. The deal runs through 2016, with club options for 2017 and 2018, and comes less than a month after the Nationals sent four prospects to the Athletics to acquire Gonzalez. The southpaw is an ACES client.

Gonzalez, 26, was eligible for arbitration for the first time as a Super Two this winter. Our projections pegged him for a $3.6MM salary in 2012. The extension will cover all four of Gonzalez's arbitration years plus one free agent year. With the two club options, the Nationals have potentially bought out three of the southpaw's free agent years.

Despite owning the rare distinction of being traded three times before making his big league debut, Gonzalez has emerged as one of the game's best young hurlers in recent years. He's coming off his strongest season to date, having recorded a 3.12 ERA and 8.8 K/9 in 32 starts. Despite leading the league in walks, the lefty earned his first All-Star berth and set a career high with 202 innings pitched.

When we looked at Gonzalez as an extension candidate last April, we mentioned that similar pitchers like Jon Lester, Ricky Romero, and Yovani Gallardo had signed five-year contracts worth approximately $30MM in recent years. Those deals also covered the pitchers' last four years of team control plus one free agent year, however none qualified as a Super Two. Gonzalez figures to command a slightly higher guaranteed salary.

With Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann under team control through 2015 and 2016, respectively, the top of the Nationals' rotation is set for the next half-decade. The club still has six unsigned arbitration-eligible players as our Arbitration Tracker shows: Tyler Clippard, Jesus Flores, Tom Gorzelanny, John Lannan, Mike Morse, and Zimmermann.

But it probably won't work out that way.

What does this mean for Smoak?

Smoak will be given every chance to be the everyday 1st baseman and at only 25 years old rightfully so. I read the M's are going to try to keep Montero behind the plate and when (not if) that fails they can move him to DH or if Smoak bottoms out they can move him to first.

Yu Darvish's contract with the Rangers is 6yr/$60M. Combined with the record $51,703,411 posting fee that was put up last month in order to secure exclusive negotiating rights, the Rangers have committed over $111 million to the 25-year-old Japanese right-hander.

I've said I think Darvish is going to be a good pitcher but there is no way anyone who has never thrown a pitch in the major leagues is worth $111 million. The Rangers better be very careful with how they use him if they plan on getting their money's worth over the next 6 years.

Rockies acquired INF Marco Scutaro from the Red Sox for RHP Clayton Mortensen.

Scutaro is the 2nd SS the red sox have traded this off season having earlier traded Jed Lowrie to the Astros. Maybe they think they're getting Starlin Castro as compensation for Theo??

That's in Pud's hands now. It's going to be real interesting who he picks. I'm going with Chris Carpenter.

Good luck with all that. Looks like Hendry landed on his feet in Washington. Oh wait, that's the new worst GM in baseball, Mike Rizzo. Did they buyout Jayson Werth yet?

By the sixth year of that deal, the Nationals will ask the league to include a short first base position, filled by their number one free agent signing Salacious B. Crumb.
