I think the reason why Dwight Howard is still in Orlando is because management wasn't exactly thrilled with what teams offered the Magic in return. Besides, there's only 3, maybe 4 teams Howard REALLY wants to go. The Bulls aren't one of them. Why? Ask the man in the middle himself!

Dwight Howard did make some remarks to Vaughn McClure, usually a Bears' beat reporter for the Trib about 2 weeks ago that made it appear as if he would soften his anti-Bulls' stance. I get the impression however that Howard might be using the Bulls for leverage and that he still wants nothing to do with the Bulls for reasons I can't figure.

For being "reasons you can't figure," you sure seem married to the "he's never coming here" narrative in the face of Howard himself saying to the contrary that he wouldn't be averse to coming here.

CH, I took what Dwight Howard telling the Trib's Vaughn McClure with a grain of salt. I simply got the impression he STILL doesn't want to come here. It's one deal the Bulls shouldn't make if Dwight ends up being a rent-a-player and ends up leaving for even bigger bucks in the offseason. That's my own opinion.

If Dwight Howard wants to play for the rotten New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets instead, that's his choice. Have fun with that piece of crap!

Bernstein's position is that the goal is to win a championship. (In his opinion) With Howard they have a realistic chance. With the current team, not so much. Thus he believes it's worth the risk. He also thinks Howard will like the winning that come along with the trade & thus will stick around. Worst case, rebuild around DRose and lots of salary cap space.

It's more than just stats Jimmy. Dwight Howard is so much better than any Center(maybe Bynum comes a little closer to him this year) it's not even fair. And Noah isn't averaging 12-12.

No. Why would the C's do that? Rondo is younger, better, and has a better contract than Gasol. NJ could panic trade Deron for a package centered around Gasol though. If they know they won't get Dwight they won't want to lose him for nothing plus their management doesnt seem terribly bright.

Gasol isn't really old and he's better than Rondo. It's looking like you can pluck a good PG of a tree but not a big. Gasol is the 2nd best PF in the league and he's only 30. He has highway miles on him. Your Deron idea sounds better at this point.

Last year was his best season as a pro. Of course he was soft in the playoffs but that's always the case.

Two years ago was actually his best season but regardless, this year has shown that he's much less effective without the triangle offense running through him. He's starting to show decline whereas Rondo continues to show improvement. The trade makes no sense for Boston. Rondo is the only player on the team worth keeping to build around and if you swap him they are even more of an old mess except without a PG or young player to build around.

Vegas oddsmakers agree with you, Rick. They're now a 3-1 choice to win the Larry O'Brien Trophy, especially now that Howard is in the fold with the Lakers. Whether or not he signs a long-term extension remains to be seen.

I think Howard will have chronic back problems and that will impact his effectiveness for stretches of time.

I think his back problems were extremely minor to non-existent.

He just didn't want to play for Orlando at the end of the season, and I bet he would not have suited up for a single game all year if he was not traded.
