Cubs Deny Possible 2013 Move to U.S. Cellular
The cross town classic could be a misnomer in the 2013 season
By Mary Ann Ahern
| Monday, Feb 13, 2012 | Updated 5:37 PM CST

Could Chicago Cubs fans be forced to watch their beloved team from inside enemy confines soon?

That's the rumor from Wrigleyville as Cubs officials mull whether or not to perform a gut-rehab on the historic field in Lake View during the 2013 season.

Should team brass decide that the time is ripe for -- and they secure funds for -- a renovation of Wrigley Field, they could move their games across town to U.S. Cellular Field -- home of the sometimes-rival Chicago White Sox -- sources said. So much for a cross town classic.

Cubs brass deny that plan is on the table.

"You are putting the cart before the horse,” one source said. "There is no done deal,” said another.

Put more succinctly:

“I have never heard of a done deal of moving home games to the 'Cell,” said Dennis Culloton, a spokesman for the Ricketts family.

Workers at U.S. Cellular tell a different story. They say they are being warned of a much busier 2013 season (as in, prepare for double the games). Bridgeport bar owners tell a similar story.

Again, the Cubs say they haven't thought that far ahead and that they are working on a plan to secure funds to renovate the stadium ahead of the 99th season there.

The Cubs are in talks with the city of Chicago for a public private partnership that would allow them to renovate the stadium with some tax payer money.

Another plan for the renovation includes asking season ticket holders to purchase personal seat licenses (or PSLs) to help pay for the renovation, much the same way the Chicago Bears financed the renovation of Soldier Field.

But without a winning team, that's a lot to ask.

bigfan would love this.

Makes sense if they are gonna renovate Wrigley. Play 62 games at the Cell, 20 in Milwaukee.

I would love for the Cubs to play at W.S. Comiskular Field Park. Finally get a chance to fix up Wrigley (the soon to be Comcast Field).

I'd love it for the simple reason that the Cub fans would fill up The Cell, thus ending all of the "No one wants to go to The Cell" talk.

But I could also see The Cubs make a deal with Soldier Field.

I think there'd be more Sux fans at the Cell for a Cubs non-Sux game, than there would be for ANY Sux game. SuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSuxSux

that would be the better choice if the logistics could be worked out

I don't see that it would be remotely possible to play at Soldier Field.

I can't see it either. They have to keep the field in pristine condition so U2 can fuck it to oblivion during the first road weekend of the season.

Have a feeling the folks at Alexian field would do something for them?

Of course the 'Legs" on this is the trade for one year at the Cell (Which the state would get) for money back to the stadium...and there is your spin that Rahm and Company wanted.

The biggest concern for Jerry & the White Sox is the fact that the Cubs would outdraw the White Sox in their own ballpark.

Why would this be a concern? It's not exactly breaking news that the Cubs sell more tickets than the White Sox. I don't think any Sox fan will be sad if the Cubs win another attendance championship in the Cell.

I'd rather go to the cell. It would be nice to be able to park in a lot and tailgate.

Come on, this has been discussed for 10 years. The options are kind of limited?

You can do this in Milwaukee as well.

Sure, whatever. Just fix Wrigley. Kthx.

Really? I've never heard it anywhere else. That's why I asked you about it back in October, 2010 or whenever it was. The guys that were telling me that shit are pretty heavy politically and they happen to be Cub fans and season ticket guys. The Cubs stance has always been that there won't be the kind of massive renovations at one time that would cause the park to close for a baseball season. Isn't that right?

I would love if both teams played there. Living in IN, it is 100X easier to get to the Cell.

If the Cubs played at the cell I would actually go to games. Wrigley is a dump and a nightmare to get to.

It's not a "STRETCH!", as Ken Harrelson would describe a White Sox homer these days. After all, I could've sworn the Yankees had to play a year at Shea Stadium where the Mets called home due to Yankee Stadium renovations in 1976. If the Cubs have to play a year at The Cell, so be it...After all, "the Sodfather" Roger Bossard recently did Wrigley Field's grass in addition to the one at U.S. Cellular Field...

I just never understood the whole nightmare to get to Wrigley Field argument. Yes, if you are driving, it's bad. But you are an idiot if you drive to that park. You can take the Metra downtown and hop on the CTA for much cheaper. You can park at many locations (some even free), and hop on the CTA and get to the game for little cost. Why drop $40, when there are multiple options to get you there quicker and much cheaper?

How can you not understand that it's convenient to be able to park and walk to the game?

Yeah I lived in Gurnee until I was in my early 20's and I think I drove to Wrigley once during that span. It is ridiculously easy to get on the train and end up down at the Grayland station and then have a beer and a shot at that sketchy dive bar by the tracks and then hop on a Bus to Wrigley. Your total cost to get down there is like 8 bucks and you can even have a beer on the Metra on the way down.

It's pretty much a nightmare to drive anywhere in the city between May-September.
