I disagree. It's just that racism against black people doesn't make the news as often.

You're welcome to add to this discussion.

Also, try reading what I actually wrote. I didn't compare them to what black people went through 50 or 200 years ago. I said that Muslims are the most discriminated against RIGHT NOW. Think before you reply.

Probably a good idea. You don't add much of substance to these types of discussions.

They may be the most discriminated against. I don't know. But I wouldn't call that racism. (And I realize this may be a matter of semantics.) Do you think non-Muslims consider themselves superior to Muslims in the U.S. with the resulting effects being similar to the way blacks have been treated in this country, for example, "don't hire a black guy [Muslim] for that job, he can't do it", etc.? I don't really see it that way. Muslims are reviled for their perceived support of anti-U.S. terrorism and the belief that even so-called moderates have failed to speak loudly enough against it. It's not really that a large faction of the country considers them less than other groups, is it?

Where did I mention anything about 50 or 200 years ago? I'm talking about now. So why you think before you type, Professor. I want to see a muslim or Arab get followed around in a store. I want to see a Arab or Muslim get pulled over for no reason. I want to see the news start off with a Arab or Muslim shooting. You want to be a contrarian about the NBA, fine. But stay in your lane, dude. You're clearly out of your element on this one.

Like I said, FF, discrimination and racism aren't the same things. I wasn't talking about discrimination except as a manifestation of racism. People discriminate against Muslims, J-ews, Latinos. That happens all the time. I'm not trying to brush it off as nothing. It simply wasn't what the conversation was about.

No, I understand your racism comes through power theory(although I disagree with it), but even under your theory Muslims are the most discriminated(victims of racism) minority group in this country right now.

I would still put Hispanics at the top of the list and blacks behind that. Yes there is a lot of hate out there for Muslims but they have a lot of catching up to do. Hell women are still ahead of them.

I guess the experiences you and I have had cause us to have different views on this. I think the number of non-Muslims who feel superior to Muslims is at least equal to, and probably greater, than the number of non-blacks who feel superior to black people.

Also, the bigotry towards Muslims and Arabs is a lot less subtle. It's almost accepted still in the mainstream.

What major discrimination exists against Muslims? After 9/11 pretty much every policy has been to make sure that there is no discrimination against them. There have been some controversies that have been pretty minor looked in the scope of things such as the NYC Mosque controversy.

It's mostly because it becomes national news whereas other types of discrimination is kind of just accepted as how things are and not a news story.

I'm out of my element? You clearly have no clue what you're talking about because all of that stuff does happen to Muslims. Didn't Chus post a link not too long ago in the Tebow thread about Muslims who were detained for praying? Go outside in the street right now and start praying spmack and I guarantee the police won't detain you.

I'm sure FavreFan knows this, but he always has to do his "Well let me interject my thought that no one has thought of yet" thing that sometimes makes him look bad.

Here's where I definitely think there's a generational component to our viewpoints. I know you're a pretty young guy and that when you were growing up in school you probably learned what might be called "multiculturalism", with the idea being that one culture isn't superior to another and there are just different ways of doing things. We were taught about American exceptionalism. That the U.S. way was the right way and the America is the greatest nation on earth, in history. I didn't question that at the time. But I can see how such thought might rankle the great grandson of slaves. Anyway, I'm not going to be convinced that a "culture" wherein a woman may be buried neck deep in sand and stoned for disrespecting her husband is equal to what we have in the U.S., despite the dark history of slavery.

I don't ever do that. And their are policies that prohibit racism against black people too but shockingly it still exists.

Are you freaking serious, dude?

My truck broke down about a year and a half ago in a white neighborhood in River Forest, right off of Lake St. I wasn't bothering anyone, just checking out my truck, seeing what is going wrong with it when not 1, but 2 River Forest police cars pull up because they were informed from someone in the "neighborhood" that I was having some problems with my car. And you want to tell me that if a Arab or Muslim person was in the same situation they wouldn't have had the police called on them, too? Again man, stick to the stuff you know, or you think you know. I live this stuff every day.

Maybe that says more about the police than it does society in general?

I got pulled over in east Joliet by not 1, not 2, but 3 Joliet cops who blocked two lanes of traffic while doing it. He asked for my ID and told me to watch my speed and let me go.

I'm pretty sure I wasn't speeding at the time.

But then I guess we're talking about what a Muslim is. If you're talking about a guy that comes to the U.S. and assimilates and joins bigfan for a slab of ribs at the Pork Shoppe, well, okay. But is that guy really a Muslim? Will other Muslims accept him?

I see women in my neighborhood everyday in full burqa. It's disquieting to say the least. I don't really think we can have a nation of people walking around with their faces covered, even under religious freedom as guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.

At some point, if there are so many members that disagree with the vocal leadership of a group, they either have to seize control of that group or accept that the are going to be viewed through the same prism as their leaders or loudest members.

I think Christians are stereotyped and denigrated by the mainstream media in the U.S. far more than Muslims.
