Well, I don't think Mon Gateau is worth $50,000 with two bowed tendons. Escalante is obviously a guy who likes to cash a bet. And who in his right mind would claim that horse off a big win and a drop in class? But sometimes it happens. That's why Escalante was pissed about the cowboy taking him. Everyone around the track knew the horse was lame except the four goofs who don't know which end eats.

Spot on 312. That was my point as well. It is so far beyond reality that it loses its appeal.

i did not see the episode..hope to tonight..but those four goofs know horses.no?..and the one guy who looks like dennis farinas' coked out brother had a trainer evaluate the horse..who rightfully said this is the horse to buy..no leg wraps in previous races ..so maybe escalante is is trying to pull something... now they paid 30 k for the horse and seemed happy/like they got a deal..escalante was pissed he lost the horse so he knows he got fucked...so the horse is clearly worth over 30k an was bought for a quarter of that...am i wrong? i thought escalante thought ace bernstine got the horse with that cowboy as a front?

The four goofs didn't care about overpaying for the horse because they just won $2.5 million. There was some sentimentality about Mon Gateau because he was the key horse in their big Pick Six. The trainer that originally put in the claim that they lost on the shake to the cowboy is named Goose. He's obviously not the caliber of horseman that Escalante is. That's why Jerry wanted to put the horse back in Escalante's barn. Escalante didn't want to lose him in the first place because he spent so much time getting him sound. He made a mistake thinking nobody would dare claim him with two bowed tendons up front. Just because a horse can win for a $30,000 tag doesn't mean he's worth $30,000.

Bernstein owns the expensive Irish horse with Farina's character as the front. He's a much higher class horse than Mon Gateau. It isn't clear yet if the Irish horse is already a champion or just a very expensive well-bred horse that has been lightly raced or maybe is still a maiden. If I had to guess, I'd say he might meet up with Nolte's colt in an allowance race or stakes at some point down the line.

The show is not terrible, but every scene is people whispering, every scene is a turning moment, has it's own crescendo like soundtrack! It's like the ending scene in every scene. I will watch it, but it is out of my "I plan to watch it" FUCK YEAH MOTHERFUCKERS! Might Save it though

Okay, T-Bone, I finally watched the fourth episode last night. Damn, this motherfucker is slow moving. It seemed like half the show was the six furlong race that Getting Up Morning won. As long as it took, I thought it was a two mile marathon.

Here are a few observations. I though I heard Trevor Denman call out the time after the race as 1:07.2. That's ridiculously fast for a maiden race. I believe the track record for six panels at Santa Anita is 1:07.1. Not exactly realistic, but possible I suppose. Getting Up Morning is obviously supposed to be a very serious horse. Also, the celebration by jockey Rosie Shanahan was more than a little over the top for a maiden race. For a minute I thought she had won the Kentucky Derby.

The horse was bleeding from the stress he endured in the race. When the vet scoped him you could see the inflammation of the epiglottic cartilage. I'm guessing Walter Smith puts him on Lasix next out and he's just fine.

I believe the backstory on Smith (Nolte's character) is that he's an old Kentucky hardboot who once managed a breeding operation in the Bluegrass. The farm's prized stallion was Delphi who is the father of Getting Up Morning. Apparently, the owners of the farm broke Delphi's leg to collect insurance money and get out of a financial jam. Smith knew about it and is carrying around the guilt of not having stopped it. I would say that part is loosely based on the real-life story of Alydar, who most likely had his leg broken in an insurance scam in the waning days of the Calumet Farm empire.

Like most things here my knowledge of horse racing is pretty limited but would you say that Alydar is the best horse you ever saw to not win a Triple Crown race JORR?? I rooted for him not Affirmed .

Wow, that's a tough question, rogue! There are a lot of great horses that didn't compete in the Triple Crown races, but I assume you mean among those who did. I guess it would probably have to be Alydar. And he clearly showed his superiority to Affirmed in the breeding shed. My stepfather was a big Alydar guy. Except he pronounced it "Alatar". I remember him telling me before the Belmont, "That Alatar is gonna get 'em today, Bobby!"

I think Sham is still the second fastest horse ever in a Kentucky Derby. Of course, he finished second to Secretariat. I'd put him in the conversation too. He got ruined trying to beat Secretariat. They broke his heart.

Thanks JORR. I know the horse was run pretty hard I just didn't know if it was something more serious. I think that
will help this show move forward if they have a horse that is able to move up the ranks and make some waves while
the gamblers horse will likely cause problems for those guys. I agree the character development and story has been
slow, there are an awful lot of characters introduced so early which may be part of the problem. I still think once this
gets going it may be pretty decent.

The Score curse strikes again.

HBO Cancels LUCK Due to Horse Deaths
March 14, 2012 | Filed under: News | Posted by: Adam Wright

HBO delivers some shocking news tonight.

The network has abruptly cancelled their new horse-racing drama Luck.

It is with heartbreak that executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann together with HBO have decided to cease all future production on the series LUCK.

Safety is always of paramount concern. We maintained the highest safety standards throughout production, higher in fact than any protocols existing in horseracing anywhere with many fewer incidents than occur in racing or than befall horses normally in barns at night or pastures. While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won’t in the future. Accordingly, we have reached this difficult decision.

We are immensely proud of this series, the writing, the acting, the filmmaking, the celebration of the culture of horses, and everyone involved in its creation.

Quote from Michael Mann and David Milch: “The two of us loved this series, loved the cast, crew and writers. This has been a tremendous collaboration and one that we plan to continue in the future.”

HBO previously renewed Luck for a 2nd season. However, since production has begun, horses have died during filming. This past week, a third horse died after an accent. The official reason for cancellation is due to safety concerns.

The network is expected to finish airing the 1st season as scheduled. The show was currently in production of its 2nd season.

I know the show is about horse racing, but couldn't most of the show happen without actually showing the races? To me, most of the racing action was kind of overblown anyway. I haven't read how the series is doing as far as viewers?

Thought this show was picking up some steam and starting to get interesting but it is being
cancelled with the season finale coming this Sunday. Apparently too many horses dying
during filming and whatnot.

this show has potential and i watch it...too many characters to cancel it over some horses dying..they could cut out 90% of the horse racing and the show may improve..nobody gives a shit about the jockeys' ..they could make it work and should try for another season.

Not one horse died in the filming of Braveheart, yet this show manages to kill several.

One show left and I have no real idea WTF is going on!

And the big race is coming up with all the characters horses are going to be in the race.

I will estimate this 1:45 sec race will take about 20 minutes. Slow mo, claissical music, close ups, mumbles...

I tried with this show. I grew up going to the racetrack every week for several years. I was right in this show's wheelhouse. I made it through three and a half episodes. Someone called me during episode 4 and I paused the show. Haven't put it back on since. The four friends were the best characters. Those are the exact types that frequent tracks and OTBs on a daily basis. Too much mumbling and stuttering from Nolte and Larry David's cousin. I didn't buy Hoffman as a badass gangster and the jockeys, besides Stevens, were uninteresting characters. I wouldn't call it a stretch to say that HBO used the story about the horses dying to cancel the show because its ratings were low.

i guess i am in the minority who kinda liked this show..but anyway i was talking to a guy who knows/bets horses and he told me that jockeys used to bury themselves in horseshit to sweat out water weight and would intentionally get tapeworms to cut weight..crazy but i tend to believe it.
