This is proof that stats can make liars of us and that you guys were not watching those games. Belle had a bad first half that effectively sunk the Sox. He had a second half for the ages but it was complete garbage time.

A Red Sox official expects compensation for Theo Epstein to be finalized "very soon," Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe tweets. The Red Sox and Cubs recently sent briefs to the commissioner's office explaining their perspective on the issue of how to compensate Boston for Epstein's departure to Chicago.

Selig will burn the Cubs though there is no precedent for this.

Didn't Theo resign? Shouldn't that mean the Cubs don't have to give up anything?

The Red Sox will receive a pitcher from the Cubs' 40-man roster. That'd rule out Trey McNutt. Rafael Dolis, Chris Carpenter, Jeff Beliveau, and Casey Weathers are on the Cubs' 40-man and cracked Baseball America's top 30 prospects for the team. The decision is coming down today, confirms Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

Red Sox receive Chris Carpenter as compensation for Theo Epstein
By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff
The Red Sox will receive relief pitcher Chris Carpenter from the Cubs as compensation for letting former general manager Theo Epstein out of his contract to become Chicago's president of baseball operations.
Both sides will exchange a player to be named later.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said he was happy the compensation issue was over. The process of settling compensation has taken four months.

Carpenter, a 26-year-old righthander, is a prospect who has played in 10 major league games. He is not the more established starter by the same name who plays for the Cardinals.

Carpenter made his major-league debut in 2011. He had 10 appearances out of the bullpen for Chicago, and also played in 32 games for Chicago's Double-A team in Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. He was 3-4 with two saves and a 5.91 ERA in the minor-league games.

Baseball America ranked Carpenter as the No. 13 prospect in the Cubs organization.

He was chosen by the Cubs in the third round of the 2008 draft. He has a 21-19 career record with a 3.62 ERA and 289 strikeouts in 96 career minor league games. He started 60 of those games. Carpenter was named an Arizona Fall League Rising Star in 2010.

Yeah he showed me less than nothing when he was up with the big club. Even if he gets it together for Boston I would rather have Theo. Glad this is finally settled before opening day

I haven't seen anywhere that the Cubs get a PTBNL. Edit: See that in Cafardo's column.

It's just a stupid precedent to set. You let your GM leave, so you get someone off the team-who-hires-him's 40-man roster in return. Who are the Padres going to take now?

Theo seemed unphased by this, which if we are all in Theo's world, is good...while I saw some great stuff from him...he is 26 and has not established anything.

If he does really turn out to be something, it is a strike on Theos board. Which can be erased by the remaining guys (Jackson, McNutt) exceeding Carpenter.

Forward on!

This is a no brainer.

At this time last year if someone was to say the Cubs could give up Chris Carpenter and get Theo (and crew) in return, people who have said they were out of their minds.

You do this every single time.

They should have sent the Cardinals Carpenter to the AL too

Why would this be a strike on Theo's board? He had zero control over the situation.

Per Ben Cherrington...MLB did not get involved..the teams worked it out.

as for the PTBNL since it was a trade we had to have a player move both ways...we have agreed on the level of players to be exchanged and it will happen before the end of spring training.

I would think that the PTBNL would favor the Cubs since Theo would have more knowledge of the Red Sox then anyone in Boston would have of the Cubs system except Gary Hughes.

Carpenter has 100mph but has an injury history and at 26 may be past his prospect peak and even though ranked in Baseball Americas Top 31 prospects the Cubs system is not deep. He was ranked 13 overall and was the 6th pitcher behind McNutt (4), Maples (5), Dolis (7), Rhee (11) and Beehler (12).

Agree. If anything,...if he does turn out to be something its another strike against Hendry & his lack of developing players.
