Sorry guys, this has the makings of a Don Imus-like thread that I want no part of. I'm going off to the Hockey thread to read North Shore J's best work.

The choice of her atypical example was revealing, as was her assumption that this person would go on to scam the government for an operation.

Spaulding was discussing lack of personal responsibility as a significant social problem. If she sees her "welfare queen" as an anomaly rather than the norm, why would she mention her at all?

Tall Midget:

I believe I have made my admiration for your writing very clear on numerous prior occasions. However, in this instance, I feel that your berating of Spaulding is undignified.

As my attempt to post an outrageous comment has failed to redirect your ire, I must now appeal to your sense of decency. Let it go.

A lady at Jewel who was paying with food stamps had a nice manicure, bought a carton of cigs, and drove away in a $35,000. She was grossly over weight but I don't believe anywhere in an entire purchase was a fresh fruit or vegetable. She will no doubt have knee, back, diabetes or cancer that she will expect the government to pay for or fix.

And the statement before that in the same post...

My aunt f'ed up her life and her children's thru her poor decision making. 3 of my cousins have stopped attending college because they wanted to or were asked to.

Maybe a first time TMC misunderstood but he did misunderstand. I believe he took that quote out of context. My aunt that I referenced was on government aid for a period of time and I'm glad it was available to her. People need help for a variety of reasons. Never once did I criticize everybody who needs some form of assistance as MITC said I referenced one specific incident.

I don't think I did so at all, but I certainly think it's possible you said something other than what you meant.

I like your posts here a great deal, stoneroses86, but I think you're overreacting more than a little, especially given the contentious history of this board.

I would only add that I do think the nature of the board itself is rapidly changing, however, and that posters such as myself are rapidly becoming nothing more than vestigial organs here. So be it.

Here you admit your prejudice for all to see. You're literally reading into what's written. I haven't seen the context, but merely from what was written, there's no indication whatever that she's against welfare in general.

Quote:
Spaulding was discussing lack of personal responsibility as a significant social problem. If she sees her "welfare queen" as an anomaly rather than the norm, why would she mention her at all?

Perhaps because, oh I don't know, she needed an example of someone who lacked personal responsibility, and this example came to mind? Could it just be that? Could it just be that her point was that lack of personal responsibility is a problem, and that one of the way it manifests itself is via welfare waste?

No, welfare isn't the problem, nor is the way the system is ran the problem. The problem is that welfare is necessary in the first place. It's like trying to duct tape a lost limb back on.

No, more like the nub of a tail on the back of a freak in therapy because he denies he is a freak.

Are you saying the board as a whole is beginning to think that "it" is something that it is not?

I'm somewhat serious because it seems to me this board is different than it was last spring when I first started reading it. It seem less confrontational but I just figured that is because I personally feel more involved in the board.

I'm interested if you are serious with your observation or just messing around TMC.

I'm absolutely certain it can. And it requires measures nowhere near as drastic as what TM would likely propose. All you need to end the inequitable distribution of wealth is a just system of laws.

Except for crimes of passion, it generally does; that is, poverty or the threat of poverty. Crime is just another manifestation of a greater social ill, much like poverty.

This board has gotten very strange. I think we all took the Brady Quinn tragedy hard and are simply projecting our disgust that a ND QB could be treated so poorly.

Someone needs to start a post about puppies, kittens, and how much Green Bay sucks.
