If this is for even $1 more than league minimum this is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of.

And did we really need the 2nd year on this one?

To preserve my sanity, I'm going to assume it's a typo and they really extended Jamal Mayers

I don't think Carcillo was that bad, maybe trying to keep the same players for next year or so?

If it's a 1 to 1.5 or so cap hit, I can't hate hit. He was playing decently. Really waiting on the cap hit to decide if i have an aneurysm

I didn't think so either... but you know, dumb plays happen. I like energy guys who add 'character'?

But there are a hundred guys like tat around the league. Did we need to sign one of them to a 2 year deal - even though he only has one leg right now?

Don't know...lots of turnover the last few years. He has made a few dumb penalties but there's not a lot of cohesiveness to this team. Maybe they are thinking they won't resign a few others (brunette?,?) already.

We gave Carcillo a one-year tryout to see if he could extract his head from his ass and he couldn't do it. Not only that, but his inability to extract said head from said ass is precisely why he's out for the year. Unless you just want him around as some sort of Reed Johnson-esque human mascot, why would you do this? We have bushels of fourth-line wingers in the pipeline who can give us energy shifts without incurring eight-game suspensions for being a Registered Fuckhead. Someone must be a little sore about having to cancel The John Scott Project.

Do we know the cap hit yet? His injury might have kept the price really low is all I can think of. He hits and I like that about him, just needs to do it cleanly.

Even at $550,000, you're better off with an organizational soldier who gives you roster flexibility and doesn't have a rap sheet as long as your arm.

This pains me, because I enthusiastically defended Carcillo this summer as a higher-upside Ben Eager. He didn't hold up his end of the bargain, though. I'm not sure what Carcillo will give the Hawks next year that Andrew Shaw won't, other than reputation penalties and suspensions.

I don't care if there are a thousand guys like tat, He played well for stretches at the beginning of the season, and given the option to sign some new(again) to a one year deal or keep someone the locker room knows for another 2 years, I'll take the 2 year guy, especially considering the roles were asking said player to fill.

A fourth line of Carcillo, Mayers, Shaw for next year doesn't offend my sensibilities at all. As long as Carcillo's contract isn't outrageous.

Nor mine, in fact, I'd be damn happy with that line. Hey, that rhymed.

What or why roster flexibility? He fills a need, one that is sorely lacking. 2 years isn't long.

One more year of Jamal Mayers might be one year too many. I'm loath to make the Andrew Brunette error again.

How annoying is it that scrawny little Andrew Shaw is the only player on the roster who can find a net presence with regularity? Jimmy Hayes seemed good at it until Quenneville stopped letting him leave the bench. I don't care if they're garbage goals, they're goals. Duncan Keith's blue-line lobs into penalty killers' shins? NOT goals.

He is 38. Which is a concern obviously. But he's been very good all year. Another year is well worth the risk I think.

Q has no clue how to use Brunette.

You're 100% right about Shaw and Hayes

Because if I'm going to have a low-paid 13th/14th forward, I'd like that role to be filled by players on two-way contracts who can be cycled through and evaluated, not an injury-prone and suspension-prone veteran who not only blocks callups by being on the roster all the time but blocks out an entire roster spot during suspensions.

It depends. Of course, Mayers is at or near league minimum whereas Brunette costs $2MM, so Brunette's attrition this year is much more costly than Mayers's would be next year. If we can't get him back at under a million, it's not worth the risk. The Hawks guessed right on cutting John Madden loose, who sucked in Minnesota and isn't really on the Panthers right now so much as they allow him to hang out with the team and dress sometimes.

In the overall view, it's not worth the hand-wringing for a 4th-line guy. But it is a very strange signing. Take age, skill, position, etc out of the picture - he just signed a guy that's played maybe 20-25 games for your team - ever - to a two year deal, even though he's currently out with a major injury.

Agree with this. He was worth the risk for this year but nothing more. There is enough talent in the organization not to do this.

Carry bags, fetch coffee, find groupies, etc. He's done.

He had a great first 10 games or so, after his suspension. Then he got suspended. Then he got stupid, bad, suspended and hurt. What comes next? An extension!

He'll get suspended yet again and will effectively make $825,000 to host his radio show. Take that, Mike North.
