Great timing Kenny! The best in the biz!

PEORIA, Ariz. -- San Diego Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks after he undergoes arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday.

The 29-year-old Quentin began to experience inflammation in his right knee after reporting to spring training and the team's medical staff has been monitoring the situation since. He said Saturday he wanted to have the routine surgery now to potentially avoid a more serious injury down the road.

Quentin
"Spring training days can substitute for rehab days so I can get on the field as fast as possible and play games that do count," Quentin said. "My other option involved trying to manage it. Knowing any type of slide or blunt-force trauma to the knee could re-aggravate it and miss an unforeseeable amount of games, this decision is made with the hope no games will be missed once the knee is healthy."

The Padres open the regular season April 5 at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Quentin was acquired in a trade with the Chicago White Sox on Dec. 31. The Padres parted with two minor league pitchers in the deal, and manager Bud Black said he plans to use Quentin in the cleanup spot this season.

San Diego struggled to score last year after it traded Adrian Gonzalez to the Boston Red Sox in December 2010. The Padres finished 71-91 and in last place in the National League West after scoring the third-fewest runs in baseball and hitting the least homers in the majors (91).

Quentin hit .533 with a homer and four RBIs in 15 at-bats this spring even though he was bothered by the knee.

"The knee nagged him to the point where it just made sense to have it scoped," Black said. "He was playing through discomfort and playing well. It's better to do this now than to have him continue to try to fight through this. If it gets worse it might affect his play."

Black said Jesus Guzman, Kyle Blanks and Chris Denorfia will see most of the playing time with Quentin out. General manager Josh Byrnes thinks Quentin could miss as little as two weeks of the regular season.

"We've got the depth," Byrnes said. "We'll miss 'Q' while he's out. But this is a chance for him to return in April."

Quentin, who will earn $7,025,000 this season, said he has never experienced problems with his knees. But he missed time last season with a sprained AC joint in his shoulder and was limited to 99 games in 2009 because of plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

"We figured this was the best chance to have a good season and be back healthy strong and successful," Quentin said of the surgery. "If you do the math it gives me an enormous chunk of the season to be healthy."

That's ridiculous. Quentin is 120 OPS guy and it appears the Sox got very little in return for him. Santos is a two pitch reliever who suffers from poor control about a third of the time and they got possibly the best control guy in all of professional baseball in return for him.

I'm not completely sold [or knowledgeable, for that matter;] on Nestor Molina, although he did put up some video-game like numbers in the Jays' MiLB system. Like Santos, he is a converted infielder who throws bullets and misses a lot of bats. His wiry frame [6-3, 180] may not stand up to 200 innings in the Show, however some guy Pedro certainly excelled to say the least with a similar body type.

Perhaps the thought was that Addison Reed can potentially give the big club what Santos would have out of the pen this season or next, and gambling on a high-reward/ high-bust type prospect like Molina was warranted given the scarcity of prospects in the Sox' system.

santos will have a better season than quentin... quentin is a juiced up slugger who is always going to be hurting or injured...molina is a prospect..nothing more...when he has success at the big league level i will be a believer..until then he is nothing more than suspect/prospect...i thought pedro was like 5 '11"....what are the chances that chris sale makes it 150 innings?..i say slim to none...should have kept him in the pen

Who had 6 exhibition games in the 'when will Carlos Quentin get hurt' pool?

I don't know anything about Nestor Molina other than his numbers suggest that he has absolute pinpoint control and that is something that shouldn't be affected by what league or level he is at. Big league hitters may knock him all over the park. Who knows? But Sergio Santos isn't a guy to cry over when he's gone. I'll reserve my tears for Daniel Hudson.

oh yeah..hudson>santos no doubt...but i liked santos and think he will be in the upper tier of setup/closers in the league...but quentin is just a china doll...he has always been hurt ..this is not surprising..it would be surprising if he did not get hurt.

I just don't see Santos being that guy. I don't think the Sox did either. They sold high. I'm not sure they sold high enough, but I'm not privy to what was available.

As for Quentin, he gives you at least 400 PA every year. Yeah, it's a little less than you'd like from a guy who can hit the way he does. But from where I sit, the Sox gave away their best offensive player for two middle grade pitchers.

Here's a video of Molina from last year. Not sure I would classify him as a string bean. He looks pretty solidly built to me.

From that vid, kid has a very Pedro-like delivery. Same 3/4 [almost sidearm] delivery with a slight fall off the mound on follow through.

Nasty movement on that 2 seam [?]. If he can control that thing against MLB hitters, look out..

he is beefier than sale for sure... he does have some good stuff we shall see if it translates into success at the real level....what do you think of sale in the rotation?

Best offensive player? So you think CQ is a better hitter than Paulie?

"Going forward"?

Huh? Well Paulie is way older and closer to retirement...so yeah, "going forward" makes sense because Paulie will be retired when CQ is still spending 25% of the season on the DL nursing a bum bodypart.

Not really a stretch there.

Uh, "going forward" I'll still take the guy who has only been to the DL once in his career and who will be playing on Opening Day.

It wasn't really a prediction. I simply stated the fact that the Sox traded their best offensive player for a couple B-grade prospects.

But he really isn't their best offensive player right now. Paulie is still better and could be better for another couple years. Now in 3 years your prediction might be true.

I disagree with that. I suppose Paulie could be the freakish player that continues getting better after 35, but I wouldn't count on that. His last two seasons have been the best of his career. I find it eminently unreasonable to believe he can continue producing at such a level. Of course, I hope he can.

Quentin, on the other hand, is in the prime of his career and appears capable of being one of the better offensive forces in the game with nagging injuries being the only thing holding him back from being a great player. Quentin will have to deal with playing half his games in a park that is extremely biased against hitters. But even with that disadvantage I expect Quentin will have a better season than Konerko.

That's not White Sox fanboy stuff. It's realistic baseball analysis.

I am just not sure how you come to this conclusion when CQ has had one season where he hit over .260 in his entire career. One year with over 26 HRs. One year with 100 RBIs.

Konerko has had several really solid years. Now of course his numbers are going to drop off as he gets older, but I see no reason to look at the numbers and say CQ is going to be the better player the next couple of years.

I think outside the usual issues with projecting a guy's relative worth, the real issue is nobody has a metric to measure Quentin's mental fitness... I get the impression watching him the last few years that it's between his ears. Walker couldn't fix him, and as mentioned Petco is brutal on power hitters.

Well, they were similar in WAR last season. I don't see last season as a particularly great one for Quentin, as I believe at this point in his career he's capable of significantly more (and he has done more once before). And I have to think Konerko will decline sooner rather than later. I hope I'm wrong about that, but I wouldn't count on it.

not one sox fan has opined on sale in the rotation...is it just common knowledge he is going to fail miserably? or are you all the type to wait til dan bernstein realizes it in mid may before you pick a side?
