Best guess do to service time considerations .. to retain control for an extra season and to keep them cost controled

Brett Jackson earliest late April but more likely late June to avoid SUPER Two impact.

Anthony Rizzo already has 68 days in MLB so he may stay down even longer most likely late June since to avoid SUPER Two he would have to wait until late August.

Now if there are injuries or trades things may change.

Sometime between June and September. Injuries, trades and how they perform in Iowa will be the determining factors. Jackson needs a trade or injury to get their early where as if Rizzo tears up Iowa and Lahair sucks he will be up.

It's such bullshit....Jackson should be starting in CF and Rizzo at 1st on opening day. Fuck the service time and keeping them under club control an extra year. If they are worthy of it, they should get the job now, rather than having less capable players taking the spots. There is no real NEED to trade anyone to make room for Jackson, it would just mean putting a guy like Byrd or DeJesus on the bench as the 4th outfielder and perhaps sending Campana back to AAA. As far as 1st base goes, LaHair has not looked good at 1st defensively and Rizzo clearly outhit him in spring training, prior to Rizzo being sent down. The sooner Rizzo and Jackson are allowed to develop at the major league level, the better. These guys are 2 big pieces of the future of this ballclub and the fans all know it. The club will create more interest and sell more tickets playing them, rather than guys that will see their future with the Cubs end in the next year or two.

Jackson will probably be up first. Hoyer has mentioned multiple times that he rushed Rizzo last year on the Padres, so he seems likely to error on the side of extreme caution this year. I wouldn't be shocked if he waits until the rosters expand unless LaHair is doing like a sup 700 ops through mid june.

Talk is heating up about Byrd. The Braves and Nationals are both rumored to be discussing the possible acquisition of his services. This doesn't seem to affect Brett Jackson starting the season in AAA as they will most likely let one of the 4A guys play until the June service time date. I wouldn't be too high on trading with either of these teams though as in previous years, with a previous GM of course, they didn't give the cubs back shit for the likes of D Lee, Gorz.

Do you think Lee or Gorzellany was worthy of much compensation? The idea with both seemed to be just getting another club to assume the rest of the contract, as neither was a player that fit into their future plans. I think you are wrong about Byrd too. Right now Reed Johnson (not an everyday player) is the only guy besides Byrd and Jackson that can play a decent CF. If Byrd were traded it makes sense to hand CF over to Jackson if for no reason other than having a competent defensive outfielder patrolling CF.

Thats the kind of thinking that leads to terrible FA signings and a huge payroll.

said it at the time and still feel the same way..hate the dejesus signing ..it guaranteed that jackson was to start season in AAA..which is just dumb...and lahair blows ..rizzo will take his job before june.

Drafting and developing top talent is what this organization has indicated will be their top objective. How terrible free agent signings plays into the equation I don't know. If they do well enough in identifying, signing and developing good talent, they will rarely need free agents. When there is a hole to fill, they can trade to fill those needs and if the farm system produces as they plan it to, there will be assets that other teams will covet that can make those trades happen. But for the most part, the plan is just to develop their own players, like the Rays, Twins and Braves do for the most part. Yes, when an injury cropped up the season before last, the Bravos traded for Lee, but only to get them through that season. The Cubs should do things similarly.

Right, which is why things like "keeping a real good young player under control for an extra season" is so important.

When you say "Fuck that" you lose control. Now when Rizzo leaves a year early you go sign an over the hill Prince Fielder to take his spot.

There is no reason to bring them up before June. The Cubs aren't winning shit this year or next. Bring them up when it makes sense for the future success of the team.

How about fan interest?? If the team is struggling as much as I believe it will, bringing up promising younger players could provide the fan interest that will allow the club to keep fans coming to the games. Sure a lot of tickets are already sold, but will many fans decide to discard the tickets and stay away as so many did last season? This team is going to struggle to score runs in many games and the bullpen may give away a fair number of games as well....it's gonna be a long season. Bringing up these guys would at least give fans hope for the future and a couple more players (besides Castro) to go to games to watch and see how they will develop at the major league level.
