Tribune to pull TV programming from 16 DirecTV markets

Tribune Co. plans to stop providing local programming to DirecTV from its TV stations in 16 markets, including WGN in Chicago, because the companies were unable to reach an agreement under which the satellite broadcaster would buy the feed for the first time....

...In Chicago, WGN and WGN America provide coverage of some 100 live Cubs, White Sox, Hawks and Bulls games over the course of a year.

In markets where Tribune owns the local CW Network or Fox affiliate, the subscribers will also lose popular shows such as “American Idol,” “Glee” and “Gossip Girl.”...

Say what you want about Comcast, but you never hear issues about this.

to be honest, I've got Dish and I don't mind the fights. It tells me my provider is fighting for me, the consumer.

Well, that sucks! Hopefully, it's nothing more than an inconvenience and that DIRECTV & Tribune Company will reach a new deal to get WGN & WGN America back on its air before too long. It comes at an awkward time, considering the fact WGN still broadcasts a big chunk of White Sox & Cubs' games every year.

It felt like when Bill Wirtz owned the Blackhawks last night, unable to watch the Hawks' regular season home finale vs. the Wild thanks to the Tribune/DIRECTV dispute involving WGN's CW9. I listened to the game on 720 WGN Radio, and with all due respect, John Wiedemann isn't Pat Foley!

That being said, I have a bad feeling we won't be able to watch the start of the upcoming MLB season because of what appears to be bad blood between Tribune Broadcasting and DIRECTV. The satellite provider thought they had a deal with Tribune to continue broadcasting WGN's CW9 locally and WGN America nationally. I tuned in around Midnight and I thought there was a new deal. Programming on both channels was up & running. It was just when I woke up Sunday morning when it was gone...

At first I was pissed at Directv...but now I'm thinking WGN is the POS in this equation. Either way, if I cant watch the Cubs home opener...I'm gonna be super pissed and will be on the phone bitching out some poor customer service rep at directv.

DirecTV Asks Who Makes Decisions at Tribune as Blackouts Extend
By Alex Sherman - Apr 2, 2012 11:01 PM CT .LinkedIn Google +1 0 Comments
Print QUEUEQ..DirecTV (DTV), the largest U.S. satellite- TV company, still doesn’t know whether it should negotiate with Tribune Co. management or its creditors to end a blackout of 23 local stations, DirecTV’s head of programming said.

The satellite broadcaster hasn’t restarted talks with Tribune because it’s not clear who has authority at the company, Executive Vice President Derek Chang said yesterday in an interview. Tribune responded in a statement last night that management has the “full support” of its board to negotiate.

Chang said Tribune’s management agreed to a new contract on March 29 allowing the satellite service to carry the local stations and national cable network WGN America. The deal was nixed a day later by Tribune’s creditors and debt holders, including Oaktree Partners, Angelo Gordon & Co., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Bank of America Corp. and Citigroup Inc. (C), according to a Federal Communications Commission filing yesterday by DirecTV.

“I sent an internal e-mail on Thursday night saying basically we were done,” said Chang, who said he flew to Costa Rica for a vacation, assuming an agreement had been completed. “Still today, I don’t even know who I’m supposed to negotiate with to get a deal.”

Chang said he had negotiated last week with Tribune Broadcasting President Nils Larsen and agreed to terms on March 29 only to have Larsen call the next day to inform him there was no deal.

No Recent Talks
There have been no further discussions and DirecTV still doesn’t know whether Tribune Chief Executive Officer Eddy Hartenstein has the authority to sign off on an agreement, Chang said. Hartenstein was previously DirecTV’s CEO.

“The only person who has reached out to us is the same guy who was undercut by the board,” Chang said, referring to Larsen.

Tribune said in yesterday’s statement that the satellite-TV provider is misstating the facts.

“We never reached agreement with DirecTV on all the terms of the contract -- not in principle, not by handshake and not on paper,” Tribune said in the statement.

DirecTV also accused Tribune of transferring control of its broadcast license to its creditors without permission, a violation of the FCC Communications Act, according to the FCC filing.

Tribune wants DirecTV to pay retransmission fees to carry the local stations. On March 31, DirecTV released a statement saying it had accepted Tribune’s financial terms to broadcast the stations, noting that it would negotiate a separate agreement for the WGN America network. About an hour later, Tribune released a statement saying it had not reached an agreement.

Second Thoughts
Chang said DirecTV had “basically” reached terms on agreements for both the network and the local stations on March 29. The satellite-TV provider later was told that Tribune still had concerns with the network portion of the deal, so DirecTV decided to release a statement on March 31 that acknowledged it had an agreement only for the local stations.

Tribune’s local broadcast stations and WGN America were blacked out to DirecTV’s customers after midnight April 1. More than 5 million subscribers have lost at least one channel, DirecTV said. Tribune owns local Fox and CW affiliate stations in markets including Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.

Tribune, the Chicago-based owner of the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune newspapers, filed for bankruptcy in December 2008, one year after a leveraged buyout led by real- estate billionaire Sam Zell.

Since then, the company and hedge funds holding Tribune’s senior debt have fought for approval of a plan to divide ownership among the lenders that financed the $8.3 billion buyout.

“If you think about what’s happened to Tribune as a company, it’s pretty sad what all the hedge funds and banks have done to it,” Chang said.

DirecTV rose 1.2 percent to $49.94 yesterday at the New York close. The shares have advanced 17 percent this year.

Local too. It's going to be a problem when it starts interfering with real sports....

Yup. I was looking forward to watching Saturday's Sox game. Might have to go over to my parents for that.

It looks like Tribune has the majority of the fault here. What I don't get is why they don't continue to carry the channels while the parties continue to negotiate. DTV has indicated that's what it wanted. So clearly, Tribune cared more about its leverage over DTV by allowing the blackout to happen. I don't mind radio broadcasts, so this won't piss me off too much. I got used to listening to the Blackhawks on the radio for years when home games were blacked out.

Denis, DIRECTV thought they had a deal over the weekend that would've prevented this inconvenience. Now, even though DIRECTV has filed paperwork with the FCC in hopes of getting WGN & Tribune-owned outlets back on the satellite provider, there seems to be finger pointing on both sides. Quite frankly, I'm not all that confident that we'll have a Cubs/Nationals' game on WGN's CW9 & WGN America Thursday, ditto for White Sox/Rangers Saturday night, and possibly the home team call next Tuesday of the Knicks/Bulls' game on the CW locally. The two sides appear to be digging in and it'll be quite sometime before WGN/Tribune gets back on DIRECTV. That's the cold hard fact of the matter.

Couple of things.
1. Nice swing and miss Ivan.
2. My understanding is if you are in the Chicago area you should be able to disconnect from Direct TV (maybe as simple as pushing 1 button on the remote) and use standard rabbit ears to get the local digital signal. Make sure your TV is digital serviceable. If it is not, you then have to zip over to your local Walgreens/Target/Walmart and get a digital cable box for $26 or so. Game on.

I'm required by law to mention, every time her name is brought up, that a few years back I had sex in her bed with one of her friends while my buddy was nailing Brittney a few floors up in his condo.

(and yes, I'm well aware the next post will be someone asking what his name was)
