Has anybody seen it yet? I'll probably go tonight.

The big debate in our household is whether I'm aloud to take the six year old and the five year old. If anyone sees it, please give me your recommendation. In case your wondering, I say yes; wifey says no.

Not at the theatre, but I let them watch them on TV and would fast forward during the scary scenes (like when his Aunt gets attacked at home.)

You're probably right, though. It would be tough to censor the bad stuff at the theatre.

NSJ,
Go see it alone first and make the call for yourself. I did that with Spiderman 2 when my kids were the ages your are now.

But, If they have seen Spiderman 1 & 2 then why not 3?
The only drawback is that it's 140 minute, which may be too long for them to sit still.

Scott,
Unlike Spiderman 2 which got awesome reviews on RottenTomatoes (93%), 3 is getting a mixed batch (60%), so I don't expect it to be as good.
I'll be seeing it regardless.

I think Doug might be right. I think it's about 2 and a half hours long too. It's tough because the clothes and toys are marketed to them but the movie really isn't appropriate.

Moms always kill the fun. I remember my Dad took me to see a few movies without my Mom's approval. She was right but I thought my Dad was really cool. He never took me to see the scary stuff though - only inappropriate language and content.

I was 3 when Caddyshack came out.

It was more along the lines of my youth crushes. Top Gun, Cocktail, Leathal Weapons, and stuff like that. She also didn't want me to see Gremlins.

Parents need to know that, like its two predecessors, this comic book-based movie features lots of action and superhero-style violence. In this installment, a mysterious black goo makes Peter/Spidey significantly more aggressive, arrogant, and combative -- even toward his friends -- which could confuse little kids who have clear ideas about their hero. His negative behavior culminates in him physically harming two people he loves (naturally, he redeems himself by the end). Thanks to the enormous amount of Spidey merchandise and marketing, expect any child old enough to watch commercial television to want to see this movie -- but know that the action might be too intense for the early-elementary set.

It comes down to knowing your kids.
There are some kids for whom the Telletubies are too violent.

As a point of reference, I took my 6 year old to Monday Night Raw recently, and he loved it

Anybody seen 300 in Imax?
I'm really tempted to make Spiderman 3 my maiden non 3-D, non documentary Imax experience.

Yes, and it was well worth the extra couple of bucks.

Yes, it was really, really good. It's too late for 300 Imax now. I'm pretty sure all the IMAX are going to Spiderman today.

Looking back, do you honestly believe your mom was right about it being "inappropriate?" I never understood the shielding children from reality bit.

Depends on the age, maturity level of the child, and content. She was right to not let me go see horror movies. I did anyway and am scared of em. Top Gun may have been a little too sexy for an 8 year old but Cocktail at 12 years old was okay.

Movies aren't reality and kids do have a hard time with that concept. Spiderman might freak a 5 year old out and then all you have at the end of the day is a 5 year old that won't go to bed. I was watching American Beauty a couple weeks ago and had to flip it off because a 2 year old shouldn't watch that. Sometimes you just know.

Wow,
At 8, you picked up on the homo erotic subtext of the volleyball game?
Pretty observant

I understand the 'fear factor,' but as for the language, violence, and/or sexuality, it's pretty pointless, IMO.

Well, I mean, people used to live in teepees and whatnot; do you think those children were shielded from sexuality or violence? They survived. Parents over-react and shield their children from reality for no good reason; I wouldn't care, except for the fact that half of America was more pissed about Janet Jackson's nipple than 9/11. I understand there's a meme, but further consideration proves it to be limited to that, I think.

That's totally different. That's thier way of life and it's not even close to most depictions in movies. Movies are not real. A 5 year old cannot distinguish the differnce.

People had other motives for the JJ boob showing. Some people wanted more control, others wanted something to be outraged about. People love to use "it's for the children" excuse. There is really no argument against it You can present your case and get the results you want

I never recall having had a problem. I remember seeing Terminator quite well (I suppose that was when I was 5 or 6, because it came out in 84). I guess my point is that I simply don't see the harm, other than in the case of a horror movie making it difficult for a child to sleep. People say children "can't handle" sex, but the truth is that they "can't handle" their own discomfort of explaining it.
