Hey, it happens sometimes. The Houston Astros went two or three years without an African-American. I think they won the pennant without any. I mean, I'm sure there were Dominicans, as there are on the Cubs, but they don't really "count" for these purposes, even though their forebears came from Africa and the Caribbean is considered part of the Americas. They're not "brothers," though. That we're even getting into the ethical quagmire of Black People Who Don't Count As Black People is kind of unfortunate and probably avoidable.

The fact that the Caribbean is a lawless wasteland of player development compared to the highly structured system for Americanadians, which requires you to actually draft them like actual human athletes and not just grow them in sketchy "academies," means there are fewer Americans of any color than there were in previous years. Ten years from now, you'll see no blacks at all!

Who has a thought like that? Frankly, I wouldn't have even noticed. The one and only place in America where I think we're really beyond racism is sport at the highest level. I don't think any decisions are ever made based on a guy's skin color. And that's probably the single place in the U.S. where you could say such a thing today.

This is from just under one year ago. If the purpose is an attempt to get more African American kids in Chicago more involved in baseball, I love the cause. If it's an unnecessary race run by Dan, not interested. It could also be a couple random messages on Twitter. However, we are all responsible for those messages. I already knew that when I signed up. Baseball's grade for gender hiring declined slightly, according to the annual study released Thursday by Richard Lapchick's Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports at the University of Central Florida.

Baseball received an A for racial diversity in hiring, the same grade as last year, and a B-minus for gender, down from a B. Its overall grade remained a B-plus.

"A one-year difference like this must be seen with the perspective of the overall pattern baseball has been going in," he said during a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "If it happened two or three years in a row, it would be different."

The percentage of black players dropped to 8.5 percent on Opening Day this year, down from 9.1 percent at the start of last season and its lowest level since 2007. It was 17 percent when Lapchick began tracking the figure in 1990.

The percentage of Latino players dropped from 28.4 percent to 27 percent -- baseball's lowest since 1999's 26 percent.

"This has been a concern of Major League Baseball and leaders in the African-American community," Lapchick said. "However, the 38.3 percent of players who are people of color also make the playing fields look more like America with its large Latino population."

While Major League Baseball's central office received an A-plus for racial diversity and an A-minus for gender diversity, the 30 clubs fared more poorly.

The number of black and Latino managers dropped from 10 at the start of the 2010 season to six, and the percentage of black and Latino coaches dropped from 31 to 29 percent. No blacks were team chief executives or presidents and only Houston Astros president of business Pam Gardner fell into that category.

Black and Latino general managers dropped from five to four, and at the team vice president level percentages declined for blacks (9.8 percent last year) and women (18.2 percent). For the VP level, teams received a C to C-plus for racial diversity and an F for gender diversity.

Lapchick said baseball's overall gender grade nearly slipped to a C-plus.

"The old boys' network has a healthier life at the team level than at the central office," Lapchick said. "For the most part, I don't see any evidence of it existing at the central-office level."

I want more Americans, period, playing baseball. The sport is losing too many people to basketball and football at the developmental level because there's more fast money there. I think investing in inner-city baseball is a worthwhile investment if you can keep kids playing.

I agree. The goal of MLB should be to have as many kids as possible playing baseball without concern about what they look like.

The underlying idea is that baseball doesn't care about American blacks, when actually the opposite is true- American blacks don't care about baseball. At least not the way they once did. You could probably say the same thing about white Americans too.

I do expect this to change as we learn more about how the minor sports scramble your brains and have the potential to leave you in a vegetative state at the age of forty.
