Big boy baseball, beni! Computer modeling shows that run scoring is unrelated to batting order. Put the names in a hat and shake 'em up!

You might be correct JORR. But, the fact remains many were up in arms about this move the first time around. Now it is pure geniusness what they are doing? I find it amusing.

Well, I look at each game as an event. The runs have to be in the right places. There is no advantage to winning a game 10-0 as opposed to 1-0. A lot of viewpoints are based on the fact that run differential correlates well to winning percentage. I'm pretty sure your highest scoring lineup over the course of a season is to simply order the batters 1-9 based on OPS. But amassing the most overall runs isn't the object of the game and that fact causes questions for me.

I would venture to guess that the upside of having the high OPS guys higher would be greater than the advantage of having a guy who can hit behind a runner at #2 or a guy who can take pitches at #8

You cant guess which games you are gonna need those specific things.

Its better to play the numbers and go with the lineup that scores the most

I understand that that is the current conventional wisdom, although no team has actually put such a philosophy into play. Beane and Epstein might be geniuses but old habits die hard.

Ahem!

Pulled SUPERDOMINANT Dempster today in 8th with two outs, one on, and a 1 run lead.
Kerry Wood walks 3 straight.
Good move!

The back end of this bullpen is atrocious.

Yep, bad move. Wood had what, 5 innings of spring training?

If it makes you feel any better the front end of it is just as terrible

I've been thinking about your name Goff. Why not Gof? It's neater.

It's a fact the Cubs would be undefeated if Runoff were the manager. It's about time to start a fire Theo thread.

Garza threw only 91 pitches today, but he also threw about 20 times to first... which now is considered part of the pitch count? WTF kind of logic is this?

Oh I have a feeling everyone from Theo on down to Sveum is safe for probably 4-5 years. Probably told Rickets these were the guys he wanted and it was going to be ugly for a couple years but he wants these guys here when it starts to turn around, then told Sveum not to worry about his job.

Dolis should have not pitched the 10th. Let him take the positives from emerging with a tie in the 9th and have him build on that.

Hopefully Svuem learns.

Swaimer is in a tough spot. He has a god awful bullpen and decent starters. The front office needs to eliminate Marmol instead of telling him to keep putting him in there so we can trade him. He cant just let these guys try for complete games everytime out.

All the players that matter and playing hard and playing well.

It is the dead ass portion of the roster that is awful.

I agree. Ryno must have stiffed a Ricketts autograph request back in the day.

This Dale Sveum angst is driving me nuts(ARRGGGHHH!). It's obvious Theo is trying to trade Marmol. The only way to do that is to get him to work through his issues and close games. Obviously it hasn't gone well and now is a good time to replace Marmol as closer. But they have to figure out a way to get Marmol back on track. Isn't it better to do that in a lost season like this one versus next year, when they may be decent?

I don't know if Dale Sveum will be a good manager, but in one month I can say he's a helluva lot better than the previous manager. Then again, several of us on this board would also be better than Quade.

The solution is simple. As I said before you put him on the DL and send him to Arizona to workout at the facility until he gets right. He is going to have to be lights out for no less than 3 weeks to get any kind of trade interest when he comes back. He is hurting Dempster's trade value as well by taking sure W's away from him.

I have no issues with this at all. They can't send him down, so I'd be happy with this option.

I just don't understand the angst. Marmol has cost this team 3 wins. But on a projected 65-70 win team, does it really matter?

 No GM would pass on a pitcher with a sub 1 ERA because he doesn't have enough wins while playing for one of the worst teams in MLB.
