World's Best Cheese Sells for $8,400
April 16, 2012 at 7:36AM by Zoe Bain | 13 Comment

How much would you pay for the world's best cheese? If it's less than $8,400, you're out of luck.

According to the Washington Post, a 24-pound wheel of the cheese currently considered to be the world's best was recently auctioned off for $8,400, or $350 per pound. The cheese was a Dutch Vermeer, a low-fat Gouda, which won the 2012 World Champion Cheese Contest in Madison, Wisconsin, last month.

The win for the Dutch Vermeer was an upset at the World Champion Cheese Contest. The Gouda-style cheese made by Friesland Campina of Steenderen, Netherlands, beat a popular Swiss cheese, stopping it from winning the title four years in a row. Just who bought the world's best cheese? An Illinois dairy supplier that provides dairy products for industrial manufacturers went home with the 2012 champion cheese.

The cheeses from last month's contest were sold as a part of an auction that raised money to help educate cheese-makers. Buyers of the Dutch Vermeer and older champion cheeses helped raise $140,000 for the cause.

Shelling out $350 per pound of cheese might seem like a lot of money, but according to Business Week, the winning Vermeer didn't raise the most cash per pound. A gold medal set of three cheeses produced by Decatur Dairy Inc. sold for $500 a pound. And one of last year's gold medalists sold for double the auctioned price of the Dutch Vermeer.

Do you think a 24-pound wheel of cheese should be worth $8,400?

I would have asked them to cut the cheese and laughed like a teenager.

I received 74 PMs detailing the fact that Juggs likes cheese, and in particular enjoys gouda. I think it is pretty safe to say that Frank is Juggs.

GEORGE: The Rosses have started up a foundation, Jerry, and I have to sit on the board of directors.

JERRY: Hey, board of directors. Look at you!

GEORGE: Yeah! Look at me! I was free and clear! I was living the dream! I was stripped to the waist, eating a block of cheese the size of a car battery!

JERRY: Before we go any further, I'd just like to point out how disturbing it is that you equate eating a block of cheese with some sort of bachelor paradise.

Yeah, that stuff sucks. I made the mistake of getting that once, it was awful. Usually Aldi's stuff is pretty good but that cheese was like melted plastic.

They have the same stuff at Save a Lot. I've never really read the package, but my wife tells me it isn;t actually cheese. Some sort of substitute or something...
