The Harry 'thing' died?!?

Brickhouse hasn't called a Cub game in over 30 years. Despite calling 30+ years of games, I'd argue that memory of him has died really quickly. Except the 2-3x a year WGN runs the nostalgia shows in prime time.

Ask a random fan in............Seattle/Oakland/Pittsburgh/etc who won the WS in '05? Or even "when did the White Sox last win it"? greater than 9/10 they get those answers wrong.

"What happened to the Cubs in '03 playoffs?" That answer will be a lot closer to what happened.

The Sox series title was a blip on the radar nationally. As are most WS these days.

For me, the "special" part if you want to call it that relates more to family & generation(s). My first ballgame ever was at Wrigley "back in the day" and those things stick with you as a kid. Anyway...watching grandpa's and grandma'a and aunt's and uncles...and in my case mom's live & die without seeing the Cubs win a world series makes you want to see the cubs win for more reasons than just winning a world series.

It's not special to be a cubs fan...but if it when the cubs ever do win one,... we hope to be alive when it does and that will be make it special. True cubs will only know that feeling. I'm sure there were Sox fans who felt this in 2005.

Unfortunately it feels like playing the lotto. You buy your tickets and hope to win....but the odd's are that you never will.

The Harry thing is alive and well. Not only do they sing every game like he did, they do it under a 15/15 picture of his face which is on TV every game.

The 05 World Series win broke one of the biggest droughts in sports and yet it doesn't define an organization that is pretty low on defining things?

Yes, a 3 year old stadium defines the winningest franchise in baseball history.

Brickhouse's statue is on Michigan Avenue. The Cubs begrudgingly put up some red letters that spell out "Hey Hey" on the foul poles. Harry got a statue before Ernie, didn't he?

I think if you asked a true baseball fan they would say the '05 Sox title defines them. 11-1 postseason run and 4 complete games in a row is not something that is likely to happen anytime soon in the playoffs, if ever again.


The last O's WS defintely would. How many times do you see that Brooks Robinson play at 3rd base shown?

For a minute or so, ok. The Cars 4 Kids ads were ok...for 30 seconds once a week. Locked in a tube going 400mph 30K feet above the ground hearing that for more than that would elicit a different natural response from me though.

Well, I'd combine Fenway and the Green Monster just like I'd combine Wrigley and the ivy.
I'd include breaking the drought too. That means that at least 3/5(Fisk, rivalry, world series win) of the Red Sox identity is defined by on the field stuff.

The Cubs have marketed their "specialness" to at least two generations of fans now. They continue it to this day. "Baseball is better here". At least some Cub fans think their experiences are more special than those of a fan of another team. I don't see how that can be denied.

I think above both Jack and Harry, you'd have WGN TV. The thing that encompasses both of them. Both of them played significant roles in defining how baseball for Jack and how the Cubs with Harry were called.

2. Yankees rivalry
3. WS titles
4. Trading Babe Ruth
5. Ball between the legs.

You may not know this but there was a Park before the current one aslo called Yankee stadium where a few important baseball thing happened.

O5 WS is not on the first one but its on the second one.

They are definitely in the top 3.

Fenway is pretty much the same as wrigley in terms of surroundings. And when people talk about the most visually stunning/beautiful stadium, SF often is at the top of the list because of it's location on the water and it's views. That's different than bars and nightlife, but it is remarkable.

Nobody ever cared about or thought Comiskey Park was great until they decided to knock it down. It was never even talked about. Just an old ballpark with better food than most places at the time.

You didn't seem to get it. I don't think that "being mentioned/displayed at the stadium is a prerequisite for it defining the team. You do. You think that Harry Caray being mentioned less means he doesn't define them. If that's the case, then Gordon Beckham defines the Sox more than Frank Thomas. It's faulty logic.

If disco demolition is on the Sox list, and it's never or rarely mentioned then why would the fact that Harry Caray is mentioned less be evidence of anything?
