Cubs Den

No big moves at Winter Meetings, so what's next?

By John Arguello, today at 3:07 pm

Kendry Morales

The Cubs surprisingly made no moves in the Winter Meetings other than to pick up Class A pitcher Lendy Castillo while losing infielders Ryan Flaherty and Marwin Gonzalez in the Rule 5 Draft. New GM Jed Hoyer did say that they did make a lot of progress and we should see some deals in the next couple of days and/or perhaps next week. Here's a few ideas...

■Find a home for Alfonso Soriano. It's tough to do when there are other options out there for other teams. There seems to be enough general interest to get this done eventually. The Cubs may just have to wait for free agents such as Josh Willingham to sign first. Last team without a DH gets Soriano.
■Find out about the availability and health of Kendry Morales. There is some concern that he may not be able to start the season and even if he is ready, it will be nearly two years since he last faced MLB pitching by the time the season starts. He'll need to get his timing in the minors. The Cubs have Bryan LaHair to play 1B at little cost in the meantime. It's worth a flyer, but the Cubs shouldn't give up much to find out if he can still play like the old Kendry Morales.
■Put in a posting bid for Yu Darvish. He's young enough to fit into future plans, so why not? The Cubs won't overbid for Darvish, however.
■Inquire about Edwin Jackson and see what it might cost. He's young and if they can get him in a Ted Lilly like deal, then it might be worth a shot. Lilly got 4 years and $44M. As with Darvish, if it's not a sensible deal, it's not going to happen.
■Continue listening on Matt Garza offers. If teams are lowballing the Cubs, then just move on. It makes no sense to trade him unless it's a big step toward building talent in the organization. Teams that may be interested include the Rangers, Blue Jays, Yankees, and maybe even the Marlins and Royals. The pitching market is thin when it comes to front line pitchers so the Cubs may get what they want.
■Stay involved in Prince Fielder and keep the interest level high. If nothing else, it ensures that he doesn't return to Milwaukee. Peter Gammons recently tweeted that the Cubs don't have the cash to spend on Fielder. Either that means the bidding has already gotten higher than their comfort level or they're just bluffing. Neither would be surprising, but I lean toward the former.
■Settle compensation for Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer. The Rule 5 Draft is over and both teams have a good idea where their rosters stand now. It's time to move on. Get the deal done or get Selig involved. With the Cubs having taken a relief pitcher in Castillo, perhaps the Cubs now have the depth to move a young bullpen arm like Chris Carpenter.
■Then, of course, there is the bargain bin. Players will get non-tendered on Monday and it wouldn't surprise me if the Cubs signed a couple of guys for depth purposes, particularly when it comes to building that 8 or 9 man rotation. Two well-known pitcher who might be available are LHP Joe Saunders and RHP Chris Volstad. Neither are much more than 5th starters but, again, the Cubs are looking for depth. Volstad is young enough to be part of the Cubs building process if he realizes the potential he once had as the top Marlins prospect.
In general, the Cubs will explore all avenues to fill their needs: trades, free agents, and the international market. They still need a 3B, some depth in the OF (particularly if Tyler Colvin and Soriano are moved, as some expect.) and, of course, the aforementioned pitching. About the only area they are set at is SS and the bullpen.

Kind of ironic that the Sox played Houston in the '05 World Series and now both suck.

Yeah, I'm still not able to talk about that WS yet...maybe we can get back to this in 2014. 8)

The White Sox are rated the worst farm system in baseball by a wide margin. No surprise with "Kenny" still running the show.

A good chance it will actually. Good clubhouse guy with legit power. A good value at 4-5M per year for 3.

Lol

And Keyser has been supplanted as #1 Fanboy. A maniac who sat with us for years at Old Comiskey posted on another board that Danks and Floyd are good for 40 wins between them.

Highly doubt they each get 20 wins, but I could see the Sox as a team getting 40 W's out of the 70 games that they start.

They ate 75% of Zambrano's $19.2 this year.

2012, 2013, 2014 $18M per year is what is left.

.229 with 0 HR's is not on the shopping list for anyone.

If he could have at least started good, maybe 2 HR's, batting .275+, maybe then could have moved him with a 60% reduction.

If somebody actually was willing to take on Soriano, it would be because the Cubs are paying 95% of his salary.

They ate 75% of the one remaining year on Z's contract. Also, he has at least shown flashes that he can still be an okay pitcher. Soriano has shown nothing, and he's an everyday player, not a work-horse pitcher that you only have to have on the field once every 5 days. He will at least eat some innings if he doesn't act like a punk on and off the field.

Soriano is an albatross that nobody would touch. Would you even want him on your team if he was playing for free? No thanks.

Because its obvious to anyone with a brain that you can't tell anything about an organization during the games.

Real success is determined in the offseason and on paper.

And by the number of future Hall of Famers Theo stockpiles in your farm system. The Cubs have guys as good as Teixiera, A-Rod, and Beltran. Who do the Sox have? Jordan Danks?

They should just cancel the season now and give the Sox a share of the division. I don't need to see more than 9.8% of the games in any season to know who is good and who is bad.

I predict that cpguy will be embarrassed by this thread for more than 9.8% of the season.

What is likely to happen is the Sox finish second with 87 wins or so while the Cubs lose 105 games and cpguy will promote the idea (along with B&b on "WSOX") that they're both losers. All that matters is winning a championship.

But if the Sox were 5-11, you'd be sure they were shit, right?

I'm more confident that they'll end up a bad team overall (even though they are at 10-6 now) than a good team. But again, it's only been 9.8% of the season. Maybe they will surprise.

You must be sure that the Washington Nationals are the best team in the NL? How about just in the NL East?
You must be sure that the Angels are the worst team in the AL West?
It's all the same.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the Sox, Nats, and Angels won't finish the season where they are in the standings right now.

The only team that would surprise me in that regard would be the Angels, though I don't think they are better than the Rangers. The Nats have a hellava starting rotation, and I still think the Sox are gonna be major players in the AL Central.

You don't think it's remarkable that the "Shittiest Organization in Baseball" is doing well even for a small amount of games?

Washington would fall into that category. They have an even better record than the Sox.

Boston is one of the best organizations in baseball - I think that is a pretty widely held belief. Check their record.

I am going to stick with my original opinion, the Sox could win anywhere from 60 to 90 games this year. Book it!
