How's this for messing with tradition at Wrigley Field: a Jumbotron in right field?

It could happen as part of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's "Fenway Plan" to wring $150 million in increased advertising and sponsorship revenue from Wrigley Field, and relaxing the ballpark's landmark status, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The plan also calls for more outfield signage, street closings on Sheffield and Waveland, sponsored entrance archways, more concerts and football games, and a stadium club, restaurant, and premium-priced seats.

Emanuel's goal, according to the newspaper report, is to renovate Wrigley without socking it to taxpayers — certainly a noble aim.

And while the renovations look to benefit the Cubs (and taxpayers), they may not be so beneficial to certain neighboring businesses that profit from their rooftop views of games.

One sports marketing expert, Marc Ganis, suggested that revenue-sharing agreements between the team and owners of buildings with rooftop bleacher seats be eliminated.

He tells the Sun-Times:

"The 17 percent [share] the Cubs get of the money they declare is almost meaningless compared to what the Cubs could have generated on their own. But, the rooftops have somehow been given protected-species status that doesn't exist anywhere else on the planet ....

"Rahm is negotiating a great deal for the city. It would be unprecedented for government to get a piece of advertising and sponsorship revenues and a minimum guarantee of amusement taxes and overage. The city will make more money if the Cubs are more successful."

And, indeed, the time seems appropriate — for good or for bad — that the Cubs consider this "Fenway plan." Boston has benefited from modern renovations, improvements, and enhancements to the Red Sox's ballpark. And, yes, they have come at a cost of about $285 million, according to the Boston Business Journal.

And, it certainly seems a given that the Cubs and Emanuel would model their plan after the Fenway, considering who's in charge at Wrigley these days: former Red Sox GM Theo Epstein is president of baseball operations for the Cubs.

Rahm was not bought and paid for by Jerry. Thus Rahm will do the right thing for the city, which is to help the Cubs via basic infrastructure improvements. Lights, plumbing, sidewalks, etc.

Jerry I am sure will tell everyone about how tough of a negotiation it was with Thompson.

Just wondering if WE (Taxpayers of Illinois ) pay for the actual T shirts they sell and Jerry keeps 100% of the gross take?

How can you not admire a guy who twisted the govt of the state to get everything and more and for the most part, all legally. Maybe some of it unethically, but still legal. (See personal loans to political figures)

But I would hope that even the diehard Sox fan would agree that the state of Illinois buying fryers, tables and grills for Bicardi at the Park, which was really the $5Mill in annual funding that was to be for "repairs, improvements, etc" is not the right thing to do.
