McClellin, who was far off most pundits’ radar three months ago, is now projected as a first-round pick. He appears in the first round of 25 of the 30 mock drafts compiled for the Idaho Statesman’s NFL Draft blog.

“The funny thing is if you talk with (NFL coaches), they already knew Shea,” said Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore, who has met with many coaches during draft prep events. “Apparently, the TV people figured it out a few months later.”

“The most important thing in this league is finding guys who can get after the quarterback, and he can,” said ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr., who projects the Green Bay Packers to take McClellin at No. 28. “… He played like a first-round pick during his career at Boise, he played like it at the Senior Bowl, and he tested like it (at the NFL Scouting Combine).”

McClellin is rated as high as the No. 14 prospect, by NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock. Most draft experts expect him to land with the Packers at No. 28 or the New England Patriots, who have pick Nos. 27 and 31.

McClellin’s value is enhanced by his position. He likely will play outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme in the NFL, a spot from which teams expect to generate a pass rush.

In today’s NFL, the premium positions are passers (quarterbacks), pass protectors (offensive tackles) and pass rushers.

Mayock expects a run on pass rushers beginning with the San Diego Chargers at No. 18.

“I’d bang the table for Shea McClellin from Boise,” he said. “… He’s going to fit into somebody’s 3-4 defense at the tail end of the first round and he’s going to be a 10-year starter.”

Benefit of the doubt is fine. Still boggles the mind when they had very real needs at positions and they picked some kind of hybrid player.
