Is it a weird pick?

Yes.

Is is arguably a bad pick?

Most certainly!

Was it an insane reach?

No argument there.

But you guys have some mind-numbingly stupid thoughts regarding this pick. McClellin hasn't even played a fucking snap and already we should fire Emery/Lovie because of it? Seriously?

The pick COULD be a 'futures' pick for the post-Lovie era, but the team's being built to win now. McClellin could very well turn out to be a fantastic piece of the puzzle this coming season, whether it's coming off the edge on 3rd down or making big impact special teams plays. I grant you that THAT kind of player isn't who you take at 19, but that's who they took. They didn't take him because Emery was bound and determined to get fired. Emery didn't pull the trigger on McClellin because he wants to fuck the Bears over.

I know it's not popular to trust a GM or give things a chance, but holy shit - calm all of your tits. This could be a great pick, and there's lots of draft left to go.

The only good thing about this overreaction is it has brought Irish Boy out of hiding.

I stopped watching a fake, charity NASCAR race to see this pick.

I am pissed.

One thing in his favor is that the packers apparently liked him. Now that is an organization that you can say "give the benefit of the doubt"

And the Patriots, both good signs.

Here's an encouraging scouting report from CBS:

Quote:
He's much closer to a sure thing than Poe. Of course, he doesn't have Poe's talent, though as a high-school senior he was -- and this is no misprint -- the Western Idaho Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year. Still, he didn't wow scouts at the combine as Poe did. But the draft is not only about combine workouts; it's about performances in games, and that's where the pendulum swings toward McClellin.

He seldom misses a tackle, is always around the pile and is extremely productive, with 33 tackles for losses and 20.5 sacks in his last 37 games for Boise State. Don't ask me why it took the rest of the country so long to wake up to him, but now that it has he's moving up so quickly in most mock drafts that he's approaching Dontari Poe territory.

"This guy is Mike Vrabel," said former Dallas player personnel director Gil Brandt. "You look at guys on tape, and Shea McClellin plays 100 percent every play. [Now, you take someone like] Whitney Mercilus, and look at him vs. UCLA, and you say, 'This is the greatest pass rusher I've seen in my life.' But if you look at him against Ohio State and Wisconsin, he's terrible. This guy [McClellin] doesn't have bad games."

National Football post had this guy pegged at 20 for their last mock draft, for what it's worth.

For these people bitching on social media about how this guy was projected to be a 3rd rounder because PFW said so - who cares? If the Packers and Pats were both hot after him, we can trust he was worth a risk. Take your heads out of your asses and stop embarrassing yourselves with endless pessimism.

And here is a mock draft that was on PFW. Had him going first round to Pats

Mercilus had 1.5 sacks against Ohio State, going up against a second round left tackle. You know how many times Ohio State passed the ball that game? 4. How many second round picks did McClellin play in the Mountain West.

Gil Brandt helped run the Cowboy's organization into the ground 25 years ago when Jones and Johnson fired him. He can take his praise and shove it. He's racist too, probably I'd guess.

Hub didn't fire that guy after he embarrassed himself over Cam Newton last year?

Mercilus recorded a sack in every game but two, and one of those was South Dakota State, where he barely saw the field because they sat the starters.

Yeah, I'd rather have the kid who had 3.5 sacks in MWC conference play. Idiot.

EDIT: it's 2.5!! LOLOLOL I forgot Nevada isn't even in the MWC yet.

I didn't really want Mercilus either but Brandt can suck a million dicks.

Come on IB, you know as well as anyone right now that no one knows which of those 2 guys is going to be the better pro. You have an opinion. Emery has an opinion. It was not the pick I was expecting, but I am willing to actually wait and see this guy on the field. Til then it is all a guessing game.

Valid. I don't know this kid will be a disaster. I do know that this kid would have been there at 20, or 21, or 22, or maybe even 32, and if not there were perfectly equivalent DEs if you really wanted to do that. I love Wendy's but if you pay $100 for a Baconator you screwed up even if the Baconator is really good.

Plus I think "Phil Emery: Draftmaster" has been wildly overblown. Those Chiefs drafts have kind of sucked in retrospect despite stockpiling picks.

All of that is fair, but we also are not privy to all the information of what is actually going on. Maybe he would not have been there at those picks and if this is the guy they had ranked the highest...

Has Bernstein tweeted about this guys concussion history yet or is he busy preparing to base the entire show on it tomorrow?
