You did work for the guy and you deserve payment. Tell him some money has to start coming in on a regular basis or you go to the courts.

Oh, we have had that conversation many times.

You see, most "professional deadbeats" have long lost all fear of litigation and credit reporting. He has no W-2'd job for me to garnish any wages. I'd have to attach his assets and force a sale, and even then the proceeds might fall well short.

I'm almost considering befriending the guy's sweet old mother to get her to loan him the money! (not really)

Well then perhaps you just have to take this one in the shorts and learn in the future not to do work for "professional deadbeats" without cash in advance.

Pres of a local hospital defaulted on new home purchase,
Offered him 60 more days to close if he released 60k in earnest money.
He avoided me for a week until I went tony soprano on him and showed up at his office with a release letter of said money.
Yes,he could have claimed duress when he signed it and I am proud of it.
I got the 60, he never closed and I sold to someone else.

I can talk to the guy for 35%.

Sounds funny, but if you hired a couple of "bouncer looking guys" just to talk to him,he might dig into his pockets a little deeper.

Hey, I'm Jimmy Pasta. You may not know me but uh we have a mutual friend from Alsip. He would very much appreciate getting his money before something unfortunate happens to your face, arms or legs. Perhaps even all three. Good day sir.

This guy named Grossbard I used to live with was always little behind in his rent. One month he asked me to loan him his share, $240. Then he split!

Danny Noonan: I can't pay you. Lou has to.
Tony D'Annunzio: Where is he?
Danny Noonan: He's out.
Tony D'Annunzio: I can see that he's out, numbnuts. Give me a coke.
Danny Noonan: One coke.
Tony D'Annunzio: Hey wait a minute. That's only 50 cents.
Danny Noonan: Yeah well Lou raised the price of coke he's been losing at the track.
Tony D'Annunzio: Well I ain't paying no 50 cents for no coke.
Danny Noonan: Oh then you ain't getting no coke. Know what I'm talking about?

Point being- no payment; no service.

We sell our cattle to private individuals for freezer beef- truck them live to a butcher facility where the customer picks up the frozen goods. I usually make the arrangements in Feb for trucking in March, with pickup in late March or early April. I contact a customer around the first date to lay out the timeline, then again when the cows ship, and when they should contact the butcher and pickup. I will usually wait until all the beef has been picked up to send out bills for the beef (emails to all but two old gals).

One customer, sister-in-law of a coworker, started with a half cow, then wanted a whole cow the next year. She does not respond to any of my first four emails, picks up her beef, then avoids me for a month. I sic her brother-in-law on her, finally get a sob story about layoffs, sick kid, etc. At this point she owes me $900-1000, and this is the first I have heard about trouble paying the bill- and I had to turn others down who wanted to buy and could have paid. I keep hounding her through the summer, I think she paid the last $90 in September.

The next year, she wanted to know why she wasn't guaranteed another whole cow

I could get a pretty good look at a bull's ass by sticking my head up there but I'd rather take the butchers word for it.

I had a roommate back in '96 who rang up a $875 phone bill from 2 hours of phone sex. Confronting him with the bill was a really fun conversation (though most likely not as fun as his "conversation."

The phone bill was in my name. For the next two years, I got lots of unsolicited porn advertisements sent to me (in addition to the solicited ones).

Did your wife believe you when you told her that story?

She also probably thinks that "raccoon" is code for some sort of mistress.

You could ask him to sign a note or take him to court so you have something acknowledging the debt in case he comes into money and you can enforce it

Knock on wood, I have never NOT collected on a debt. I had a couple over the years that took a while (a couple months) before I got paid. The last such case, was a guy I had contracted work with for over 10 years. He had a spectacular home in Winnetka and had me do a lot of work to prepare it for sale. His job (futures market) had gone from a once highly profitable one, to one that provided him very little income. When I first started doing work at his home, he commonly gave me tips of as much as 500 dollars. But when I finished the most recent work, his wife told me she was out of checks and would send me a check in the mail in a few days. I was doing work at a neighbors home a week later and was told that this couple was in dire straits financially and owed a number of people money. I went over to the home and spoke with them and explained that if they could not afford to pay for the work done, I wish they would have asked if I might be willing to do the work, with the agreement in place that I would be paid when the house sold. But as much as they were great customers over a long period of time and had been generous towards me in the past, I would be okay with such an agreement even at that point. The house sold 2 weeks later (this was 6-7 years ago) and I got paid right away. Like BigFan, I have had to show up at a few homes after not being paid promptly, but that generally results in a quick resolution. Unlike some here, I would NEVER advise anyone to write off a debt for valuable services rendered.
