Alshon Jeffery
6'4" 229 lbs
South Carolina

Jeffery's junior campaign at South Carolina was a disappointment, in part because of well-documented quarterback troubles (Stephen Garcia got kicked off the team) and defenses focused on him after Marcus Lattimore was lost for the season. In 13 games, Jeffery caught 49 passes for 762 yards and eight touchdowns. However, he found the endzone in each of his last four games and had four receptions for 148 yards and a score in a bowl win over Nebraska. The numbers were simply modest compared to his ridiculous sophomore season. In 2010 he racked up 1517 yards and nine touchdowns on 88 catches.

Jeffery is a physical specimen at 6'4'' and 229 pounds. He runs around a 4.50 in the 40-yard dash and has been clocked as fast as 4.46 from that distance. His combination of size and speed is without a doubt NFL material, which is why he left early. Red flags, though, have started to creep up. He disappointed at the NFL combine and scouts are becoming concerned with Jeffery's work ethic and potential weight issues. Once thought to be the second receiver off the board in the first round behind Justin Blackmon, Jeffery has seen his stock slide. Look for him to be selected late in the second round or early in the third later this month.

I agree. Why give up a 5th to move up 5 spots? Come on Phil!

more notes:

South Carolina wideout Alshon Jeffery is quite the interesting 2012 NFL Draft prospect. He has the potential to be one of the game's truly dominant targets in the NFL, but he comes with a scary amount of downside.

He racked up 88 catches for 1,517 yards and nine scores in 2010 and followed it up with a 49-762-8 line in 2011. Plenty of factors come into play to help explain Jeffery's major letdown last year, but some of the onus has to be on this physical freak of nature, too.

POSITIVES
Very strong hands
Powerful build (6-foot-4, 229 pounds)
Great red zone threat with tremendous leaping ability
Long strider with deceptive speed in short area
Tracks the ball well over both shoulders
Excellent body control - makes a lot of acrobatic catches
Extremely productive in 2010 (88 receptions, 1,517 yards and nine touchdowns)
Willing blocker and uses his size to his advantage
Hard to tackle in the open field - strong stiff arm and respectable elusiveness
Insane potential as a pro

WEAKNESSES
Major drop-off in production from 2010 to '11 (largely due to the team's quarterback and running back woes)
May struggle to gain separation at the next level
Lacks quick feet off the line and top-end speed
Major bust factor
Drops too many passes - needs to catch more with his hands and not his body so much; could be concentration lapses
Ejected versus Nebraska for throwing a punch
Ran simplistic routes in college and is very raw in this area
Unrefined as a blocker - needs to learn better technique
Questionable work ethic

I don't like the pick, personally, but I'm just gonna throw up my hands and let this thing unfold.

The best thing I've read about this selection is that it brings back a route the Bears haven't had in years - the inside slant. He could be awesome in the red zone, and at LEAST our WR corps is no longer a bunch of undersized pussies anymore. Bears finally have some size and versatility there.

A big time roll of the dice it sounds like. Jeez Louise Phil. I do like the red zone potential...

I like Sanu over Jeffery. From everything I read, has great hands and a great work ethic. Alshon seems to have a bit of an attitude problem.

You'd look hypocritical if you did anything else.

I think we have opposite views of every move of this draft as I like the pick. He's a big WR who catches everything thrown to him. Jay Cutler will throw high to him and make it impossible for anyone but him to catch the ball. He's really a good fit for this team.

He can jump out of the stadium and has what might be the best hands in the draft. Hands is debatable, but he definitely top 3. Only thing not to like is the weight issue. I'm not overly concerned about that. Separation is an issue according to scouts but there have been plenty of elite WRs to have that tag.

They wanted him and they moved up to get him. I like it.

I'm more pissed that they moved up to get him, he would've easily been at 50, but then again I'm not there on the floor fielding team reports. The Bears did what they felt they had to do. There's upsides to the pick, absolutely, but as it appears on paper it smacks of a major gamble.

I hope you're right, and the scouting reports I've read/highlights I've seen are pretty encouraging, but just ... eh. Here's hoping he proves me wrong.

At least they recognize the need to upgrade at WR and he is def. a red zone threat.

I'm glad they addressed WR. Whether it will pay of or not, of course nobody knows, but this team sorely needed one.

So they have a DE who needs to gain weight and a WR who needs to lose it.

by the way, Jeffrey has had some great games against some of the best corners in this draft, including Kirkpatrick and Dennard

I'm okay with a possession receiver in theory. Bears have had enough speed guys that weren't very good. And they'll have to utilize the short passing game since they still haven't upgraded the O-Line.

I have no thoughts on this guy specifically though. Although he does look kinda fat in that picture, and his listed weight seems kinda high.

He is 13 pounds below that playing weight. Just like Mc Clellin, give him an appropriate nutritionist and he should be fine

I would have liked them to have traded up a few more spots if they were going to do it and have gotten Hill.

That's a great point. Oh well. Bears do have one of the best WR coaches in the league, so that might help.

I don't think any other Bear (pre-Brandon Marshall) makes that catch.

That video shows him being good at catching passes with a DB draped over him. Unfortunately, there are frequently DBs draped over him.

I love it. Finally Cutler doesn't have to throw to ants all over the place.

Rehire Phil Emery.

I don't know about the trade-up, but I like the pick on principle. They went for a big receiver. We now have Marshall, Jeffery, and Bennett as regular receivers, and Davis at TE; that's 4 receivers with average to plus size. We have suddenly gone to having a midget receiving corps to having a receiving corps with plus size.

Clearly, there's going to be a massive shift in our entire offensive strategy. This strategy seems to complement Cutler better. Very excited to see our offense this year.
