Memphis 4 - Iowa 0

■Travis Wood appears to be coming around. After 5 strong innings last time out, Wood again started strong before faltering and giving up 2 runs in the fifth(1 earned). He went on to pitch 6 innings, walking 2 and striking out 8 in what may be his best performance of the year so far.

Is he that bad? I haven't heard anything about him since...the draft?

FWIW, Keith Law thinks Simpson might be done. Simpson's velocity is still significantly down from when he was drafted.

In 4 starts he's 0-3 with a 7.94 ERA. In 17 innings he's given up 26 hits walked 12 and only 5 strikeouts.

I have no idea why they started him in high A ball. He couldn't get anyone out in extended spring training last year why so why would they jump him up to high A? Looks like another demotion is in order.

that is why i was pissed hendry/wilken were allowed to draft again....they drafted a bunch of bums...i have no faith in any of those suspects/prospects other than jackson and rizzo ........ and i am not sure jackson will ever hit but he should be very good defensively .... it makes zero sense to have wood in aaa...he needs to be in this weak ass rotation to evaluate him..of course he can get aaa players out..he has proven that a long time ago...can he get major league hitters out is the question.

Cubs 2011 1st round draft pick Javier Baez broke a lengthy slump with a 9th inning ground single to left. Prior to the 9th inning hit, Baez had gone 0-20 with ten strikeouts since hitting for the cycle last week versus the Angels in Tempe.

Even with the recent batting skid, Baez is hitting 278/278/750 with three HR, three triples, two doubles, and 12 RBI in ten EXST games (36 PA). He also has no walks and 11 strikeouts (all swinging), two stolen bases (no CS), and he has committed six errors in the field (four throwing, two fielding).

Great article by Paul Sullivan of the Trib:

As the 29th anniversary of the Lee Elia rant approaches, the Cubs find themselves, as Elia might say, "mired in a little difficulty."

They have started out the new era at 6-13, ranking near the bottom in National League pitching, fielding, home runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

With all the problems they have had scoring runs, protecting leads and simply winning games, you would think manager Dale Sveum would go "Elia" at some point.

But Sveum hasn't so much as raised an eyebrow in his first 19 games in Chicago, keeping his head while Cubs fans lose theirs. He only leaves the dugout when he needs to, doesn't spar with the media and hasn't come close to an ESPN-worthy moment with an umpire, whether it's over a blown call or a rain delay.

Does Sveum even have it in him to blow up?

"I think he has it in him," first baseman Bryan LaHair said. "I just don't think he really has had a huge reason to do it yet. He's not one of those managers who is going to abuse that part of his managing style. If there's a situation where he feels he needs to go out, he'll go out there. He hasn't had too many chances to blow up at anybody. He has our backs. We know that."

LaHair's point is Sveum is going to be himself. He said the players have seen Sveum ticked off, and that he lets them know when they have made a mistake, "whether it's me or (Alfonso) Soriano or anybody."

But three weeks into Sveum's new job, his team already stands at a crossroads, in danger of becoming irrelevant in Chicago.Sveum and Chairman Tom Ricketts put the onus on the team on the first full workout in spring training, when both said the Cubs were good enough to contend this year. The statements were counter to all the talk last winter of "building a foundation of sustained success," the mantra of the new regime.

If the Cubs really do think they're strong enough to contend, there would be little reason not to call up their top prospect, Anthony Rizzo, to help solve their most glaring hole — an overall lack of power.

As of Thursday, Rizzo was leading the Pacific Coast League with seven home runs at Triple-A Iowa, hitting .373 with a .693 slugging percentage. He looks ready, feels ready and, not surprisingly, is anxious to get out of Des Moines.

"I never, ever want to get comfortable in the PCL," Rizzo told MLB.com. "The travel is the worst. There are nice hotels, nice fields, but there's no getting comfortable in this league."

There are nice hotels in the majors and Rizzo would enjoy staying in one soon. With LaHair as the only power hitter so far, hitting four of their seven home runs, the Cubs desperately need another bat.

Naturally, baseball President Theo Epstein argues Rizzo needs more time to develop, which makes sense until you see rookie Rafael Dolis thrust into a setup role with no Triple-A experience whatsoever.

May would be as good a time as any to call Rizzo up, especially with an opening the Marlon Byrd created. Yet LaHair hasn't taken any time at all practicing in the outfield. He knows he will have to move to right field when Rizzo eventually comes up and said the hot start at Iowa was "expected" of Rizzo.

"The kid can really hit," he said. "There's no doubt about it."

LaHair and Rizzo spoke in spring training about the possibility of hitting together in the Cubs' lineup. It's a vision for Cubs fans to cling to, and the shift of Wrigley Field ballhawks from Waveland to Sheffield Avenue, where LaHair already has hit one home run this spring, would be a sight to see in itself.

"Two left-handed bats, a lot of power, a lot of quality at-bats, (both) see pitches," LaHair said. "It's definitely a good combo. Whenever the right time is."

I'm guessing they send Wells back down after the start tomorrow knowing that Dempster will be back and Castillo can hang for the 5 days until they have to activate Dempster. Hopefully they can dump Soto in that time.

Courtesy of Cubs Den:

■LHP Jeff Beliveau won't be in Iowa long if he keeps pitching the way he has in his last 3 outings. Today he pitched 2 scoreless innings, gave up one hit, walked none and struck out two. Over his last 3 appearances, he's pitched 5 innings with no walks and 4 strikeouts.

■RHP Alberto Cabrera could be the next power pitcher to emerge from the Cubs system. He was throwing 97 mph two seamers. He struck out one and shattered a bat with another hard fastball inside. His ERA is 2.13 on the year. Hitters are batting just .156 against the 6'4, 220 lbs Cabrera and he's had surprisingly good control for a guy with his velocity and movement. He's walked 4 batters in 12.1 innings on the year.

He is a very streaky hitter from what I remember from following his minor league career. He will be on fire for 2 weeks and then be lucky to have a few hits in the next 2 weeks. Going up to the big club and having a 2 week cold spell would not be a great way to start ones career. I am fine being patient with him.

Pro ball hasn’t been entirely kind to Jackson, the 31st overall pick of the 2009 draft. The outfielder has had an up-and-down pro career so far and 2012 has been no different. Playing at triple-A Jackson is showing good on-base numbers with 14 walks in 23 games but he’s also struck out an eye-popping 29 times. The left-handed batter is hitting just .209 against right-handed pitchers and his average is buoyed by a .407 average against southpaws, a small-sample number that’s not going to help him for long. The organization hopes that Jackson, 23, will be the club’s starting center-fielder of the future but he’s currently looking like an average regular at best rather than a star.

Would like to see them bite the bullitt and release Soriano unless they find a team willing to pay even 1M per year of the remaining 3 years/53M Hendry "negotiated".

You know....He is not doing shit power wise but the guy is busting his ass and has gotten alot better defensively with Swaimer in command. I hate the money they are burning on him but the guy is trying as opposed to every other entitled veteran of the past who just mailed it in.

I agree,Soriano is trying. The asshole has been trying our patience since he got here. How many more times do we have to watch him strike out on a breaking ball 3 ft. out of the strike zone? Like I said 3 years ago,cut his ass. You have to pay him anyway, but why pay him AND allow him to hurt your team?

That being said,I would still give him until the end of June to start hitting. BUT only against LHP.

Soriano is currently blocking Jackson and Rizzo from being called up. Rizzo can't be called up unless the Cubs move LaHair and he can only play LF. The Cubs can't call up Jackson unless they move Crazy-Legs Campana to the bench which they probably don't want to do at this point in the season.

While Soriano is trying, ultimately he is causing more problems because of blocking the top prospects.

Soriano is fine. This team sucks anyway. Might as well keep the prospects as prospects and not start eating in to their service time until later in the year.

Thank you. Soriano is not blocking anyone from being called up. They are doing the smart thing right now.

Cubs suck??? 2 games out of the race for the final playoff spot. THIS is what I'm hoping for. I don't think it's unrealistic.

Both of them will and should be called up this year. Probably not until July. Therefore, the Cubs have until then to decide what to do with Soriano.

At that time, HE WILL BE BLOCKING THEM FROM COMING UP. So the Cubs will have to decide what to do with him at that time -- no matter how much defensive effort he is putting out.
