The time is right: we need to tank.

It sounds radical, but it's the right move. We've all known that the Boozer contract is not good. The thing was, with the team poised to challenge for a title, you had to roll with it and see what happens. But now the title hope for this year is over, and next year as well. Even when Rose comes back next year, he's unlikely to reach top form even by the playoffs. Next year is dead as well. Add in the likely surgery to Deng, which will probably result in him missing the beginning of the season, and next year is likely to be very bad.

Trade Boozer for expirings. Maybe even trade Deng for expirings. Tank the year. Get a high lottery pick, and a #2 option in free agency. Bam. You're ready and re-loaded for 2013-2014 and beyond. If you keep the current core together, your options for upgrades are very limited, and you'll always be trying to turn current #3 and #4 options into #2 options. This makes no sense given this opportunity. No sense in willingly strolling into NBA hell when you can seize the opportunity of a lost season to really tank and get a solid lottery pick.

If Jerry is willing to spend some cash, they need to amnesty Boozer and get some playoff tested vets not scared in the post season.

No way they find a taker for Boozer willing to trade expirings IMO. It would be nice though.

Who are you going to sign in their stead? With the contracts of Rose, Deng, Boozer, and Noah, you're pretty much at the cap.

There's no way they amnesty Boozer. They don't need to. They got rid of the Wallace contract, and they can do the same with Boozer.

They got rid of Ben's contract by taking on an equally terrible Larry Hughes contract. They won't get any value for Boozer.

Right. They need to get even more shitty, but shorter, contracts. Preferably, expirings.

Any expiring deal would constitute value in this case. There's really no logical reason a team would give one up to take on Boozer's liability of a contract.

I don't think they will be able to trade him for anything worthwhile until 2014, when he himself is an expiring contract.

I wish they would amnesty him. Bulls have to be one of the more profitable teams in the NBA, no?

2012 and 2013 Free Agent List:
http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/Fre ... -2012-2013

Unfortunately there's not a lot of free agents that wow me on that list, if they did amnesty him. Some SGs this year: Rudy Fernandez, Eric Gordon, George Hill, OJ Mayo, Nicolas Batum; but those guys are all restricted. Lou Williams, Carlos Delfino, Randy Foye are unrestricted. 2013 looks a little better I think. You got Gerald Henderson, Stephen Curry, James Harden, Tyreke Evans, Gary Neal; all restricted. Josh Smith, David West, Chris Paul, Andrew Bynum, Tony Allen, Monta Ellis, Dwight Howard, Manu Ginobli, Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap; unrestricted. Obviously the Bulls aren't going to get Paul, Howard, or Bynum, but having multiple superstars in free agency prevents the market from inflating the price of mediocre guys.

Wouldn't things find a way of working themselves out if Dwight Howard weren't such a bitch? Maybe the season ending injuries will ignite some kind of bond between the two superstars.

Good find.

Even if they do amnesty him, no need to do it this year. They could amnesty him next summer, and that way they only eat 2 years. I don't know that Boozer will sink my tank aspirations. :alien: You're right about the free agents too: next year is better. That's fortunate for the Bulls. My target? James Harden.

We should just enjoy what we had in the 90s. If the Bulls never do anything again that was good enough.

I know you were joking but I feel horrible that I even somewhat agree with that.

I like the idea, but it won't happen. The Bulls org will let the idiot fans think DR will be back for the playoffs and ready to make the big playoff run (of course this is fantasy). But it will keep the seats filled, playoff tickets sold, season tickets re-upped, general fan interest high in anticipation of the Savior's return.

They're not going to the Tim Floyd era again.

Harden would be perfect for this team. That would be unbelievable. Itll be interesting to see how the Thunder handle him and Ibaka.

If Randy Foye can be had this summer for the MLE I'd jump at that. I'm assuming the Clips will keep him though. I also don't expect Bynum or Howard to actually hit the open market in the summer of 2013.

It's not really a joke. I'd be very happy if the Bulls won another title but nothing will compare to that. I'd be fine if I never saw the Bulls win another title in my lifetime. Let Cleveland have one.

I am in full agreement with trying to bring James Harden to Chicago. Although I highly doubt it will ever happen, it is certainly a nice thought.

I highly doubt the Bulls will ever use their amnesty. That's not how they do business.

I do agree with tanking next year, though. Over in the NHL, the Philadelphia Flyers have been a perennial playoff team for as long as I can remember, with the exception of 2007, when they stumbled early and just went for being the worst team in the league. They drafted 2nd, took James Van Riemsdyk, and went right back to being a playoff team for the next five years with a Stanley Cup Final thrown in. Had the Blackhawks not won the lottery, they could've had Patrick Kane.

A better example than the 2007 Flyers, one even closer to home, would be the 2008 Chicago Bulls. Theretofore reliable first-round out, struggled early, junked the whole season, got Derrick Rose, went back to reliable first-round out and then to contender with the maturation of Rose and the hiring of a non-retarded coach. I say try reloading again. They won't win the lottery or even pick in the top 5, but no reason why you can't get a very good piece in the top 14.

It's cute when the small little towns no one cares about get a title. Look at how excited it makes Green Bay to not be invisible!
