Isn't there enough homo talk on this board tonight already?

As homo as you are I am surprised you are not a wrestling guy

I don't get it. I stopped watching maybe around '96 or so, right around that time that prick was just sitting in the corner of the ring for 20 minutes bitching what about raven or whatever. It just sucks. When there is action it's just silly. The scripts are silly. I know guys that walk around talking like they're on RAW or whatever and they sound like complete fucking idiots. I've been to a couple of these, and the people in the crowd were all bizarre and frightening.
Makes me want to shake my fist at a cloud.

What about guys who write their own matches featuring message board cretins, moat of whom he's never met.

Those guys are ok, right?

RIGHT??!!

It is probably true that there has been an increase in worry since 9-11. I would bet this type of anxiety occurred after previous wars.

Ive found that I have been incredibly worried both before and after having a kid. When I am sober, right before I go to bed I have a panic attack. I think about going to sleep and not waking up again. I have had this type of attack for many years now. It comes and goes, but Im going through the cycle of having it the past few weeks. After talking to someone about it, they made a point which I thought was great. Having this worry is usually a natural response if you are someone who does truly care a lot about someone and / or yourself. You are worried because you dont want to lose them. Of course, it could also be due to other things, like realizing you are working yourself to death. Anyways, it is likely natural for us all to go through something like this.

Fix what ailes you. Why are you working yourself to death? All that ends up in is death. Then you can't drink.

Live in the now. Take a vacation that is a little bit over your budget. Spend a day just having fun on the weekend with family. Quit this message board and do something productive. Figure out how you can make the most amount of money while working the least amount of hours. Most people work too much as it is. These are the things you can control.

We worried for decades about the Russians nuking us. It didn't happen. Now, we worry about terrorists. Spoiler Alert. They aren't going to kill you either. They may kill someone else but it won't be you.

In my opinion, the stuff people constantly worry about almost always ends up not being worth worrying about. In college, most people I knew were worried about getting jobs in a bad job market. They all did. They still have jobs. In high school, people worried about another Columbine shooting happening there. It didn't happen. It still hasn't there.

I agree that I shouldn't worry about things I can't control (which is kinda the definition of many of the type of events we're talking about). Harder to do in practice. I work in a business where I have to contemplate the impact of these global events... but I need to learn to leave this stuff at work and not bring it home to me. I worry that my kids aren't doing well enough in school to get a good job. I'm probably tougher on them than I need to be. Maybe I should just name my boy Sue and see how he does. What do I name my girls?

I think the major source of your worry is that the scales are falling from your eyes in regards to Pat Fitzgerald.

Its all in our memes. The best way to replace a meme is with a better meme.

I worry about my retirement.

I worry about not being able to be a safety net for my son.

I worry about providing a home for my wife.

I worry about losing my job. I'm stable now, but you never know.

See, this to me is normal, healthy stress. You have to have some stress in your life. This is normal. Worrying about getting killed by a terrorist isn't.

To alleviate this, do an audit of your own finances and see if you can find a way to put 7-10% of your income into a 401k or IRA and then another 7-10% of your income into a savings account or at our age a mutual fund. It's amazing how you can find a way to live without something when you simply pretend like you never had it.

The last five years have been...interesting in terms of worrying for me. The tenure-track is interesting because if I survive I'm set, if I do not, I'll probably have to find another line of work because I will never find another TT job again (no pressure). The tenure track is awesome...once you have tenure but for the six years before it is terrible. I may say and think that I'm in good shape (I'm constantly told that "they" are not worried about me), there are still some things, conscious and unconscious that happen to me that are direct result of being on the tenure track. I have lost about 15 pounds, but at least three times a week I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep because I'm thinking about TT stuff (as Marc Maron put it on twitter once: I woke up at 4am because my brain spontaneously decided it was time to reflect on every bad decision I have ever made.). When I do sleep, I grind my teeth, I do use a mouth guard but have lost two teeth/got crowns because of this. All of this has led to having TMJ syndrome; which was so bad in January 2011 I could barely open my mouth and it manifested itself in an incredibly bad ear infection. Hopefully, I'll find out next May it was all worth it.

Wouldnt be nice if this didnt sound normal? To clarify, I mean we all seem to have to deal with the stress of cradle-to-grave security. You will of course remind me that hard work pays off in the end, but I have worked hard for about twenty or so years now and I feel less secure about those things above than I ever have. Yes, it is part of getting old, but wouldnt it be great if it wasnt. Why shouldnt we expect better than this. Rick mentioned putting money into a 401k... I did. I put a healthy percentage in for seven years, five of those years I was matched 3 to 1 by my employer. Then 2008 hits, I lose 40% and I dont see it going up again for years. I see my father finally getting to pull from his 401k and there are incredible stipulations involved as he is now finding out. I think part of it is that he is being scammed as a senior, but they are limiting his withdrawals and threatening taxes. That scares the crap out of me. On top of it, he hasnt had a job in his field in ten years so he has been forced to work as a janitor. I wont even get into the burden this causes. My house value has dropped from $245,000 to $170,000. I have been layed off twice in my career and had my job switched over to India three times because I was too expensive of an employee. I wish all these stresses were not a normal part of getting older. If I had more security, I actually think I could work smarter during the day, be a better family man at night and on the weekends and maybe even post better here.

I'm healthy, my kids are healthy, and we are doing ok financially. I get to the point where I get angry at myself for worrying so much. But I'm not sure how to fix it. But maybe I'm just wired that way.
