NEW YORK — Donald “Duck” Dunn, the bassist who helped create the gritty Memphis soul sound at Stax Records in the 1960s as part of the legendary group Booker T. and the MGs and contributed to such classics as “In the Midnight Hour,” ‘’Hold On, I’m Coming” and “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay,” died Sunday at 70.

Dunn, whose legacy as one of the most respected session musicians in the business also included work with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd’s Blues Brothers as well as with Levon Helm, Eric Clapton, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, died while on tour in Tokyo.

His niece Melissa is a friend of mine who I haven't seen in a long time. She's an artist back in Memphis these days. Here's her website: http://www.melissadunn.net/

Anyway, back in the late eighties Melissa set up a show for my hardcore band at the Antenna Club in Memphis. Her brother- I think his name is David- played guitar in what was the hardest band in Memphis at the time. The name of his band was Metrowaste and they had a cool frontman named Angerhead who also worked the door at the Antenna. Metrowaste played on the bill with us. I think they thought we were a bunch of lunatics from Chicago. We played pretty loud and fast at the time. These guys were obsessed with Gacy. They kept asking us questions about him since we were from Chicago. They had actually driven up to Chicago and filled up jars with dirt from his property.

 Willie Hall was the drummer on Shaft, Duck Dunn was not. Dunn was a vital part of Stax Records though.

Do you guys remember the Hot Dog stand called Duks, formerly known as Donald Duks until Disney told them to knock it off?

I used to go to the one on North Ave and Pulaski. I guess there is still one left over on Ashland and Chicago Ave.

There used to be one at Grand and Harlem that served beer.
