Report: Rose undergoes ACL surgery

May 12, 2012, 2:12 pm

JJ STANKEVITZ

According to Neil Hayes of the Chicago Sun-Times, Derrick Rose underwent surgery to repair his torn ACL Saturday morning, with no complications or surprises coming out of the hour-long operation conducted at Rush University Medical Center.

Hayes reported that a source said Rose's knee "looked great," although his recovery process is expected to continue into the 2012-2013 season. Rose played in 39 of the Bulls' 66 regular-season contests and missed the final five playoff contests as the Bulls fell to Philadelphia in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

Good news!!!!

I think he will be fine. Just a hunch based on his desire. But he damn well better not play a second more than he should, play in any all star game ever again and never ever ever play in an Olympics.

Personally I doubt he will ever be the same. Maybe all-star caliber, but never an MVP type. Unless he becomes one of the league's best shooters.

My guess is that he will be out until after the all-star break, but I wouldn't be surprised if he returned quicker than that. We probably won't see the Derrick Rose we have grown used to until the following season, if ever, but once he is comfortable, we will get an all-star level player. If Deng is also out for an extended period, into 2013, and Brewer, Watson (and possibly Korver) are not back, this team is fighting for a playoff spot, at best.

Get him back after the Super Bowl as only a hockey fans sized group gives a shit about the NBA before that time.

Return v. Being Elite

Is what is not being considered.

I dont doubt a quicker than most return, but if it is watching him play like he did with his back injury, then just shut him down for the year

The idea of spending the entire season rehabbing him, dumping as much of the bad on the team as possible and getting a chance at the overall #1 pick seems to make sense.......but I don't really give a shit about the nba or the sport of basketball in general so do whatever.

This is actually a pretty good plan. Intentionally suck but pretend not to. Let the fans believe the savior will return for the playoff run. Actually NOT. get a decent draft pick.

It worked for the Spurs in 96-97 when David Robinson missed the whole year. Tim Duncan has worked out pretty well for them.

Walt, I don't think you understood the point of my post. Yet, you saw fit to throw an insult at me for no reason. Here's the point of my post:

In 1997, David Robinson missed the entire season due to injury. The Spurs were bad enough to get the #1 pick in the draft that year, which turned out to be Tim Duncan.

I'm saying next season, the Bulls might want to just tank the year in order to get a chance at the #1 draft pick, whomever that may be.

Make sense now?

I don't think the Bulls are in the tanking business in hopes of getting the #1 overall pick like they did a few years ago. There has to be a lot of luck involved. Let's not forget these Bulls had less than a 2% chance when they won the Lottery a few years ago. It's not a sure thing the Bobcats will have the #1 pick in a few weeks on that "Match Game"-like set when ESPN airs the NBA Draft Lottery.

No-your response is what is stupid. The team (Spurs) had no Tim Duncan then either. But after suffering through a horrible season, due to David Robinsons absence (due to injury),they were able to get the great draft choice they used to select Tim Duncan. then with both guys in place (and healthy) they won championships. I suggested something similar about how the Bulls (Dengs wrist thread) could have Deng out the first 2-3 months after surgery and Rose out until at least January, yet still get on enough of a roll to make the playoffs. In that scenario, the Bulls still could compete for a championship-albeit without home court advantage, and get a decent draft pick. Under the circumstances suggested here, they would miss the playoffs, but have the chance for a real difference maker in the draft. If D Rose is not 100% before February and the team looks like it might not make the playoffs, it might be best to hold him out and see if a Tim Duncan type scenario might be possible.

They don't have to have the overall #1 pick to get a difference maker. the #2-5 picks could all be players very capable of making a substancial difference. This is a team that lacks players capable of creating their own shot (besides Rose) and getting such a player, whether he's a 2 a 3 that can create off the dribble or a 4 or 5 that can post up effectively would make a real difference.

At least now we all know what kind of player Deng is. If he's your second best player than you're in trouble. I know he was hurt but he was bad. And Hamilton showed he's nowhere near what I thought he'd be. I want OJ Mayo. And send Korver/Boozer the LOOZER packin.

 @ this thread.

The Bulls would have to pretty much not have Deng and Rose return at all, then have Noah and one or two other starters go down for the season for them to be bad enough to be in contention for the #1 pick. This team has too good a coach, too much depth and talent to miss the playoffs next season barring even more substantially bad luck. I agree it'd be a great plan, but it's about as unrealistic as saying they should just trade for Kevin Durant. That would be a great plan too.
