Please say the Cubs aren't seriously doing that.

They should just put up a plaque or something that commemorates the 20K game, and leave it at that. No way his number should be retired.

not impressive numbers agreed.....and he was pampered the whole way. and there is no way they retire that number

Totally asinine and won't happen.

His charity bowling event will be an annual thing however and it is something he actually cares about.

Again, a class act right up until the end.

Or put up '20Ks' on the foul pole or something.

But to talk of retiring the number of a guy who didn't have as good of a career as Alex Fernandez is goofy.

A flag on top of the roof would be fine. I don't even think that deserves to be on the foul pole. They need to leave room for Grace's number...

This. A plaque somewhere in the concourse would be more than appropriate. Anything more is embarrassing.

How about a Game 7 2003 NLDS flag?

"You guys have to understand -- about 30 minutes ago, I choked," Wood said. "That's the bottom line, I choked. That's about all I've got right now

I would like to have Mully contact the British press to see where they stand on this issue before I make a ruling.

Should have been a no hitter. Kevin Orie should have made that play and it easily could have been called an error.

That will just lead to Mully stating that no one on Man U is a flopper and they are the greatest football club in the Premiership.

Fuck Man U.

Arsenal FTW!

One game basically made his career. Maybe he'll do it again and go down as one of the all-time great pitchers.

Yeah thats the thing people are saying today, but I think its a little misleading.

He was a good major league starter if only for a handful of years

My favorite Cub of all time.

Hmmm should I donate to a charity that the Wood family runs or one that has Dan Bernstein as a board member.

If only he would have realized this a couple months ago. The last few weeks haven't been kind to his legacy. He should just go on the DL before he retires, just for old time sake.

Here comes the hook! Got him! 20 Strikeouts!!!

The last pitch was ridiculous, you can see why his arm blew up, nobody should be able to throw like that. Fuck his high school coach for having him throw 150+ pitches. Riggleman was even blowing his arm out before Dusty had the chance.

Smart guy. Retire during the cross town series, get all the love from the fans. Turn that around into being the next Santo, Grace, ex-cub player to work for Cubs TV/Radio and have a steady job for life.

If those reports still exist, we won't be seeing them until at least Selig retires or sometime 50 years into the future. I am not too sure about Wood, I just don't think he's was the type of guys that would roid. He just had too much raw talent to screw that up. One day we will know.

According to Game Score *, the 1998 20 K game is the best pitched 9 inning game in MLB history.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/play-index/share.cgi?id=Lbeas

* Game Score is a metric devised by Bill James to determine the strength of a pitcher in any particular baseball game. To determine a starting pitcher's game score:

    Start with 50 points.
Add 1 point for each out recorded, so 3 points for every complete inning pitched.
Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th.
Add 1 point for each strikeout.
Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed.
Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed.
Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed.
Subtract 1 point for each walk.
