* Game Score is a metric devised by Bill James to determine the strength of a pitcher in any particular baseball game. To determine a starting pitcher's game score:

    Start with 50 points.
Add 1 point for each out recorded, so 3 points for every complete inning pitched.
Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th.
Add 1 point for each strikeout.
Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed.
Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed.
Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed.
Subtract 1 point for each walk.

We need an in depth discussion of this.

Yeah he's probably frantic worrying about where that post baseball career employment income is going to come from.

One of my all time favorite Cubs....but he was awful this year and he knew it and this is a class move to shut it down instead of just banking money and getting beat around.

I wouldn't be surprised if his arm is fucked up again and he has been pitching through it. His labrum is probably shredded to pieces.

Add 2 points for every out recorded.
Subtract 1 for every hit allowed
Subtract 1 for every walk allowed
Subtract 1 for every hit batter
Subtract 1 for every run allowed

Humber: 64

Let's not get carried away. Maybe Top 100, but nowhere near number 1 factoring in pressure/meaning of game, etc.

It's just a new-fangled metric. Was I surprised it came out on top? Yes.

But it illustrates how dominant the guy was, 5 games into his MLB career. Obviously he was derailed by injury, as he only went on to win 86 games. Still, a 21 year old Kerry Wood was a beast...

Without a doubt. I'm a fan, but typical Cubs that injuries derailed a potentially dominant career.

It's unfortunate this guy couldn't stay healthy. One of my favorite players ever. I would love to have a team of guys with his mentality (Bulls were close this season). Class guy and some of the nasty stuff you've ever seen.

All this being said,Ryan Dempster has been the more valuable pitcher to the Cubs.

Wood says the highlight of his career was his game 7 HR against Florida.

Typical.

That's 1 more playoff RBI than Harold Baines had in his White Sox career.

Reports say Kerry Wood will retire today. No word on whether his personal-services deal with Ricketts includes working to slur Obama.

Clearly a Cub fan.

Particularly since Rickett's Dad decided not to go ahead and fund it.

Some see this display as a sappy, contrived ending for Kerry Wood's career. Perhaps it is. But you see sappy, contrived endings in movies that make you feel good when you leave the theater all the time. I prefer it to the "real" ending that would have marked the end of his career, if not for this appearance...which was the glove/hat tossing game that was an unfortunate lowlight in Kerry's career. Better to leave on this note instead

If you saw that picture and didn't know the context, wouldn't you think it was him walking off the mound after winning a big game. Instead, it was a one batter outing against a rookie.

Clap like seals, cubbies.

I get that Wood is more icon than reality. He is Elvis or the Beatles to fans, especially to those who grew into fandom in the 90s. I also understand that as an icon the love is due to a connection that was made that goes beyond numbers. In conclusion, I understand and agree with you easily manipulated losers. It was nice for you and him to have your moment.

Its not like he came in and they had a fake at bat.

He struck out a guy with the livest bat to come in to the AL since Carlos Delgado in a one run game.

It was real.

Also, his wife opened her big mouth on FB. I dont think he was gonna announce it before the last appearance.

It was fine, let's move on

Rumor now has him interested in the front office and working with Theo and Jed.

Let's face it with the Cubs history he'll be developed by Theo/Jed as a GM possibility and leave the Cubs and build a world series winner elsewhere.
