Light years is overstating it. But, Baines had a better career.

Sox fans are having their fun at the Cubs spending 2 minutes to celebrate a guy that gave them a number of good memories. However, the Sox retired the number of a guy that hit .288 lifetime for them.

Just pointing that out.

You know what the Sox did just before retiring his number? They traded him.

People like people who like them, people like to be liked. And Kerry Wood likes Chicago and the Cubs, so they reciprocate. (Even if it's misplaced because I'm sure he doesn't give a shit about individual fans). Whatever. And people probably feel bad for him. Also, he fills a void because we haven't had many players to cheer for lately. Mark Grace was the last untainted, drafted and played (almost) his whole career here guy to really root for and identify with the franchise. And even he left the the Cubs with bad blood, and has turned out to be kind of a douchey guy after retiring. The Wood love from some is over the top, though. He didn't exactly enter my good graces with his glove-throwing fit last week. And no statue or number retirement, please.

No. That was universally acknowledged as a PR move by Reinsdorf and never really accepted by fans

Doc, Baines' family and Sox management were the only ones celebrating his number retirement/statue.

Celebrating mediocrity during a throwaway season is pretty standard, especially considering a team favorite retired today.

But hey, they haven't won the world series in 100+, so might as well just piss all over every moment available.

He was not hit hard once all day unlike Humber.

If you're mediocre enough, the MILFs might retire your underwear.

Good luck.

I'm sorry, was everybody else under the notion that 2012 was The Year of the Cub or something? They're rebuilding. If they win it's purely circumstantial and in should no way derail the rebuilding process.

But since I'm a Cubs fan I'm baseball retarded. *waves L flag around* Just ask all the White Sox diehards that keep the Cell at 30% capacity.

The Sox fans that post in these threads are really insufferable, especially considering that their whole shtick is about how insufferable Cubs fans are.

That guy got what was coming to him.

Little known fact that Tom Gamboa molested the Ligues father as a youth.

I kind of figured all Sox fans were born of contempt, so it's only natural they gravitate that way. I find it very odd since I don't think that road is two-way. I'm a Cubs fan but I am indifferent to the White Sox. I follow them passively enough to know what they're up to and some of their roster, but by no means hate them. A lot of their fans, however, seemingly love to stir shit up simply because they feel the need to prove they're a superior brand of fan.

Very Cardinals-esque in that regard, which is in no way whatsoever a compliment.
