Each time the Cardinals have won a title it's apparently preceded with the greatest baseball ever played by anyone at any time. Otherwise maybe the Rockies of a years back, maybe?

The Rockies maybe had a more impressive postseason run than the Sox????

If you haven't been drinking heavily today than there's no other explanation for your work here Dewskie. Even Mini Ditka thinks this is embarrassing at this point.

Edit: FYI - Rockies never won the Series.

I just watched the DeJesus/Beckham tackle job on Comcast and Stone/Hawk are totally off saying "good play" by Beckham. Come on. He tackled him right off the fucking bag!

Bad call and good to see Svuem tell the ump to get fucked!

Huh? That was just a great play by Bacon.

I know the Rockies didn't win the series, but they won 21 of their last 22 and swept their way into the series. I'd say that's a hell of a streak, title or not. They were the first team to win their first 7 playoff games in 31 years. They were the first team to do it since MLB added the division series to the playoffs. That equates to Impressive Postseason Run, title or not.

That's great. What happened when they got to the Series?

What they did in the regular season doesn't have any merit in this discussion. Their postseason run finished on a four game losing streak, it doesn't compare to the Sox in any way.

You're setting your own terms on what dictates an impressive postseason run. Sorry for even making an effort.

 what?

Shakes said the '05 team had one of the best postseason performances in recent memory. The Rockies had a good year and a nice run but how can you say it's equal when they got swept in the WS?

No, history has set them for us. Since the DS format, only 2 teams have ever gone thru the playoffs 11-1; '98 Yankees and '05 Sox. Best post season runs ever. No bout adout it.

An aside, I heard that there were only 35,000 fans at Wrigley yesterday, which is the lowest attendance figure since the crosstown series began in 1998. And Cubs fans give Sox fans shit about not going to the Cell!

Enjoy another Kerry Wood press conference today!! I'll just enjoy the Southsiders kicking your ass :D :D

Did you just cite what the Rockies did in the regular season about a postseason run? Wow.

Original question: was there a postseason run as impressive as the White Sox title team of 2005?

The White Sox in the 2005 postseason destroyed the Red Sox, defeated the Angels in 5, and ultimately swept the Astros to take the crown.

This was arguably one of the most prolific runs to a title of any team in baseball history, no argument there. But if you're talking all-time postseason runs, the Rockies have a semblance of an argument if you're talking the bigger picture surrounding reaching the world series. Obviously that Rockies team ran into the freight train of the Red Sox and their pitching bottomed out, but considering they went on an incredible tear just to get a wild card spot, then sweeping a 2 and a 1 seed to make the series was no small feat. The 2005 Sox played more games at home against lower seeds and required 5 games to win the AL pennant. If we're talking memorable streaks in the postseason, the Rockies are among the most memorable in recent history, considering they stole their playoff spot with an unbelievable September streak and ultimately won the NL pennant, defying all expectations.

Is there any comparison between the two teams? Not really. But according to the parameters of the original question, my response was not as dumb as some of you are implicating.

And the '98 Yankees are the greatest team that ever played the game.

You cited the regular season success of the Rockies for a question about the post season.

I guess the 2001 Seattle Mariners had a better postseason run than the White Sox too!

Wood got to go out on his own terms, walk off his job and hug his little boy. He shared his last day on the job with his 6 year old.
Tough to hate on that.

Part of what made their post-season run fascinating was how they reached the post-season. So referencing the is Mariners as abstract as hell.

Look - I get it - you're a White Sox fan who refuses to look at things any other way than White Sox > everything possible under the sun. I've paid my homage and tipped my cap as much as possible to that Sox team's success (laughing at their ratings benchmark aside). But if you and Shakes and the gang want to continue to be hard-ons, that's your prerogative. It's not that I was 100% wrong or you were 100% right - it's just that one side of the argument is being a troll. Hint: it's not me.

It made a travesty of the game. It was a cheap parlor trick. A manufactured memory. Guys pitch in the big leagues because they can. Not because they "deserve" to hug their kids in front of 30,000 people. By that rationale I'm sure Rogers Park Bryan would love to walk off the mound at Wrigley and hug his daughter. There are probably a few guys on the Sox he could strike out too.

This Kerry Wood thing is a microcosm of the Sox hate for the Cubs. It baffles the minds of Sox fans that the Cubs have moments like these that they feel shouldn't even merit 30 seconds on CSN postgame live, yet not only does it breach local and national headlines, it could somehow earn this guy a retired number, a ring of honor type-deal, and 'legend' status among fans. This drives them crazy, and cements their already burgeoning thought that White Sox fans are a superior fan of a superior brand of baseball.

What it comes down to is that no matter what the Sox may do or accomplish, they will always play second fiddle in this town, always. The Cubs are a vastly more popular fan base across the nation and the world. If the Cubs win the title it will send ripples across the sports universe, people will remember where they were when the Cubs win the title. Just having that singular success would transcend sports and echo through every medium as a historic sports benchmark.

Whereas the Sox win the world series and it's relegated to an obscure trivia question on bottom-tier game shows.

And yesterday a guy who had a fairly good pro career and while time and injuries wore down his skills, he still went about his business with a smile and humble grace that echoes the "let's play two" mentality set about so many years ago. I think even Kerry realized that he needed to step aside after the uncharacteristic glove/hat toss, and Sveum gave him the opportunity to get one final batter out in a meaningless interleague game early in the season. He went out with a strikeout, a charming moment leaving the field, and went about leaving the game with a measure of dignity.

Yet Sox fans, in their superior minds, feel that this love and respect Cubs fans have for Wood is both irrational and unwarranted. It all comes back to hating for the sake of hating; contempt for the sake of contempt; all spattered on this thread with the grace of a foot-stomping infant. I don't hate White Sox fans or the White Sox. I just feel like a lot of you take things out of hand because these things don't happen on the south side, apparently.

That's what even dumber. It's not that I don't care about the Sox, I just have no personal interest in them, no investment. I'm lukewarm about them, and have never bought into the idea of hating them "just because."

Yet as this bullshit thread has warped into this horrible mess, a few of you have reminded me why I'm glad as hell I'm not a Sox fan.

I'm not pretending I'm doing something different here. Don't be mad because you made one of the dumbest arguments ever that the Rockies post-season run was great because of how good they did in the regular season.
