I've noticed this phenomena is worse in the FB era...

I'm like spmack and most dudes, I don't really give a shit about the day itself. My ladyfriend, on the day in question (my 40th, so presumedly a bigger deal than normal) invited a few of our good friends to dinner via Facebook and email. I didn't really know anything about it until people started calling with questions about the restaurant. It worked out fine, but I did have to message everyone requesting that no gifts were required. Sometimes it's better just to let the ladies indulge themselves on these occasions, you still might get a nice 'present' in the end...

Like everyone else, I want nothing special on my birthday. My parents like to celebrate birthdays however, so we will usually go to their house on a Sunday for dinner and cake. They do this for all their kids and our wives/girlfriends.

I'm in line with the general consensus around here. BBQ or Chinese food and liquor. Maybe an extra favor from the Missus, but that's about it.

The coolest things though were the cards my sons made when they were still in preschool/kindergarten. I'm always surprised when the wife wonders why I still keep them.
