He needs to read his writing out loud. It is a mess of polysyllabic words that make sense together but have no rhythm or feel. It's like a precocious eighth grader with a too-fond appreciation for the Microsoft Word thesaurus function wrote it, notwithstanding that, yes, he is much much sharper than David Haugh.







Those phrases should never slip through a second draft. You can get away with that ugliness when you are speaking off the cuff, as he does on the radio, but you'd never try it in a speech, and it is even worse on the written page.

Also, quite apart from Bernstein, where in the Important Sports Thinkers handbook is the one sentence paragraph rule written? If that's what J-schools teach, blow up the J-schools.

How about a new list of of people who who won't/better not be on the B&B show? Hawk ditched the flagship in giving his mea culpa, Haugh should now join Telander, and that's just this week's additions. We know the list doesn't exclude fellow SCR hosts, and should some day include just about any and everyone they come across, just a matter of time.

Probably be left with the non-sports intellectuals and a few writers who like to talk sports.

Dan is actually right. I wouldn't let my kids play football. What is strange here is that he is so concerned about the brains of young football players but he is letting his kid play hockey. Hockey, while probably not as bad as football, is a close second in terms of head injuries even if you don't include fighting. I just don't see how you can justify the "Football will melt your brain and you are an idiot to let your kid play it unless you are poor" card and then let your kid play hockey. What do you think happens when you get checked against the boards or a high stick hits your helmet or you get tripped and fall down? It's the same brain that can't handle football there.

I know what the response is. "He's only a little kid and those leagues aren't very physical" but where do you think older hockey players get started? At 14, is he going to sit him down and say "I know you like hockey, but we aren't poor so I won't allow you to play". Of course not.

Before Bernstein starts judging others for putting brains at risk he needs to ask himself why he's allowing his son to play hockey. We all saw the Marian Hossa hit. We all know about Sidney Crosby. It may be safer than football, but it's not safe. Get your kid into golf and table tennis and let the poor people do what your son was born to avoid by birthright.

Interesting that some of the people who are the quickest to judge other parents and their actions in general are the same ones who want their kid to play a sport that almost guarentees brain damage.


I sincerely doubt Bernstein is going to let his kid play hockey. Maybe floor hockey.

My son is 20 months old, and my wife bought him a little set of three plastic golf clubs. I put those things in his hands everyday.

He's not going to say that--not a lot of poor people playing organized hockey in Chicagoland--but he has said that he's going to take his kid of out of hockey once it gets serious. I mean, he's seven; he's in a mess-around-with-a-puck-and-fall-on-your-ass league, if anything.

Why get your kid involved in hockey at all though? He's going to have a tough conversation when he tells his son that he is too entitled to play hockey, football, boxing or go into the military. Why even make it a possibility that he'll be playing hockey at an age where his brain will be destroyed by it?

Listen, he can raise his kids how he wants and I'm not going to judge but clearly he's making the wrong decision in letting his kid play hockey.

Hockey is too cost-prohibitive for poor kids, to the detriment of the sport's development. (John Madden grew up in Toronto's housing projects, but I have this sneaking suspicion that Toronto's housing projects aren't quite like ours.) Why am I telling you this? You know this. How needlessly remedial. What's our endgame here? For you to say that then neither rich nor poor kids will play hockey, so hockey is dead, points and laughs?
